<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Improved clutch system.
This invention relates to the adaptation in the transmission mechanism of automobiles, of an auxiliary clutch device, to facilitate the change of speed and the shifting of the vehicle.
This auxiliary clutch device which is preferably incorporated into the transmission mechanism of automobiles, behind the gearbox, comprises two engaging rotary members, one being a conductor member and the other a driven member and a second. third rotating intermediate member, the arrangement being such that normally the two members engage with each other for both directions of rotation, but when they are disengaged and the speed of rotation of the driven member exceeds the speed of the conductive organ, the intermediate organ prevents them from engaging up to. that the driving member starts to rotate again at the same speed or approximately as the driving member, at which time the clutch is done automatically.
The auxiliary clutch, if it is disengaged at the same time as
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the main clutch before changing gears, will free the gearbox from the engine and the rear axle allowing a smooth gearshift in the gearbox more or less at rest. In addition, positive drive of the motor to the cardan shaft will not be able to recover until the rear part of the transmission, including the cardan shaft and the auxiliary clutch drive member, are turned. at the same speed or about the same speed as the main shaft of the gearbox and the driver of the auxiliary clutch, with the result that the jerks or jerks which occur so frequently when changing gears are automatically avoided - or reduced.
This arrangement has, moreover, the advantage that a positive control is always available for reverse gear.
Preferably, in an automobile, the auxiliary clutch is coupled with the usual clutch pedal so that when this pedal is first lowered, the main friction clutch is disengaged and when the lowering of this pedal is continued. - here the auxiliary clutch is released.
The auxiliary clutch may comprise a sliding member permanently connected to the cardan shaft of the automobile, a conductive member permanently connected to the shaft of the gear boot, means for sliding the sliding member in and out of engagement with the conductive member and a rotary member intermediate between the sliding member and the conductive member and whose shape is such that, when the sliding member and the conductive member are disengaged and that the speed of rotation of the first exceeds that of the second, the intermediate member is interposed between these two members so as to prevent them from engaging again, until the conductive member turns a little faster than 1 'other, the intermediate member then moving automatically so as to allow the two members to engage freely.

In order for the invention to be fully understood, an embodiment thereof is described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional longitudinal elevation of the auxiliary clutch adapted to an automobile.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the rotary driving member.
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view thereof.
Fig. 4 is a side elevational sectional view of the intermediate rotary member.
Fig. 5 is a front elevational view thereof.
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of the controlled rotary member and,
Fig. 7 is a front elevational view thereof.
Referring more particularly to Figure 1, 1 indicates the side member of the vehicle chassis under which is located the ordinary gearbox 2 from which the shaft 3. 4 is the cardan shaft on the front end of which is the flexible coupling 5 controlled by an independent intermediate shaft end 6 extending from the rear end of the gearbox 3.
The rear end of the shaft 6 is held in a fixed support 7.
A sliding sleeve 8 (see Figs. 6 and 7) is guided on the shaft 6. This sleeve has a series of outer teeth 9, each of which can be bevelled at its front end as indicated at 10 (Fig. 6). A ball bearing 11 is mounted on the rear end of this sleeve and a spring 12 inserted on the shaft 6 tends to push the sleeve forward (see FIG. 1).
At the front end of the shaft 6 a ball bearing 13 is fixed between a nut screwed onto the end of the shaft and a shoulder of the shaft.
The rear end of the gearbox shaft 3 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
provided with a flange 14 to which a female conductive member 15 (see fig. 2 and 3) is fixed by three bolts 16. This member 15 has a cylindrical internal surface at 17 in which the ball bearing 13 of the shaft 6 so that member 15 can rotate on shaft 6. At its rear end member 15 has a number of inner teeth 18 spaced apart and shaped to correspond to outer teeth 9 of the sliding sleeve or male member 8. These teeth 18 are shown bevelled on their posterior edge as shown at 19.
An intermediate member or cover 20 (see Figs. 4 and 5) is engaged on an outer cylindrical part of the member 15 so as to rotate on it. The cover 20 has the shape of a cup and has at its end a central opening 21 made at the request of the shaft 6. Around this opening there is a series of teeth 22 much smaller in circumferential size than the teeth of the member 15. On the inner face of the end of the cover 20, is secured a washer 24 held by rivets. This washer has a central opening 25 of the same diameter as the opening 21 of the cover. A series of teeth 26 are distributed around the opening 25, the latter being wider circumferentially than the teeth 22 of the cover, so that on one side of each tooth 22 there is a step.
The spaces between the teeth 26 allow the passage of the sliding member 8. These steps 27 are shown bevelled. When the cover and washer are in place on the shaft 6 and member 15, a ring 28 is secured to the front face of the cover to hold it in position.
A support 29 of the frame carries an oscillating control fork 30 resting on the front side of the thrust washer 11 of the sleeve 8. This fork is connected by a rod 31 of adjustable length and a pin and buttonhole system 33 -34, with the ordinary clutch pedal which is connected to the ordinary friction clutch in front of the gear boot, not shown.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The device works as follows:
Normally the sleeve 8 of the shaft 6 is biased forward by the spring 12 and, passing through the cover 20 and the washer 24, its teeth 9 engage with the teeth 18 of the female member 15, as the female member 15 is rotated by the engine and the sleeve 9 is guided on the shaft 6, a positive drive between the gearbox and the rear wheels of the vehicle is established.
In Figure 1, the sleeve 8 is shown slid rearwardly and out of engagement with the member 15.
To change gear, the clutch pedal 32 is lowered. The first part of its movement disengages the ordinary friction clutch, between the engine and the gearbox. The further lowering of the clutch pedal absorbs the play between the pin and the buttonhole and turns the fork 30 counterclockwise, thus causing the sleeve 8 out of engagement with 1 '. female part 15. The gearbox is now isolated from the engine and rear wheels and its parts will slow down immediately, especially if a moderate clutch stop is used.
It will be seen that in its extreme rear position, the teeth of the sleeve are still engaged with the cover 20 but not with the washer 24. With the gearbox in this condition, the gear changes are effected without noise and without shock, because there is no charge on any of the parts. As the shaft 6 driven by the rear wheels then turns faster than the shaft 3 of the gearbox, the ends of the teeth 9 of the sleeve 8 rotate in the openings of the cover 20 up to opposite the steps 27 ,, after whereby the teeth will drive the cover 20 with them independently of the member 15. The clutch pedal is now released and immediately the usual friction clutch engages.
If at this moment the sleeve 8 turns even faster than the gold-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
female gane 15, the steps 27 will prevent the teeth 9 of the sleeve 8 from engaging with the member 15, although the fork 30 has oscillated in its forward position as shown by the dotted lines in FIG. 1. As soon as the member 15 rotates very slightly faster than the sleeve 8, however, its friction on the washer 24 causes the washer and the cover 20 as slightly faster than the sleeve 8, the teeth of which are neutral in the sides. openings in the cover until they slide off the steps 27 and project into engagement with the teeth 18 of the member 15 re-establishing the drive after the gear change. The bevelling of these various teeth facilitates this re-engagement.
If, on the other hand, when the friction clutch is re-engaged after the gear change, the engine is running fast enough to drive the vehicle, the gearbox is immediately accelerated to a speed at which the sleeve 8 can engage with the member 15 and restore the drive.
In both cases therefore, the drive is not reestablished after the gear change until or unless the front and rear parts of the transmission turn at the same speed (in practice there would be a slight and negligible difference in speed). In this way, a smooth gear change is automatically obtained without the driver having any particular skill. The operation known as "double clutch" becomes quite unnecessary, and it will no longer be necessary to take into account the speeds of the engine, gearbox or transmission.
In Figure 1 the dotted lines show parts 30, 31, 33 and 34 in their normal position.
If, however, when the vehicle is going down a hill, the clutch pedal is partially depressed to disengage the friction clutch and the shift lever is placed in neutral, the vehicle will roll down. To put the engine back into gear with the transmission
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
In order to disengage the auxiliary clutch, the clutch pedal must be fully depressed, after which the gear lever can be placed for the desired speed. Putting the engine back in gear with the transmission after sliding is, with ordinary transmission, a delicate movement which requires a great deal of skill and therefore sliding is seldom practiced. The auxiliary clutch according to this invention makes this operation very simple.
When stopping the vehicle before reversing, it is necessary that the clutch pedal be lowered only to disengage the ordinary friction clutch, because if the auxiliary clutch is disengaged, the reverse gear will not. cannot be established with the gearbox shaft 3 rotating in the other direction. With a little practice, the position of the pedal, where the friction clutch is disengaged, can be easily felt.
The lever 35 shown in FIG. 1 mounted. on the frame, is a brake lever connected by a connecting rod 36 to the ordinary transverse brake shaft 37. These members do not form part of this invention.
It is evident that a number of various constructive modifications could be made in the arrangement to suit various vehicles or for other reasons. For example, as a variation of the arrangement described, the auxiliary clutch device could comprise a male rotary member having two series of radial projections, one of which would mesh with teeth or grooves of another female rotary member and the others would be housed in an L-shaped recess made in an annular member mounted around the male member. A spring would normally cause the male and female parts to engage.
If when the male organ has been disengaged from the female organ, the first rotates faster than the last, the second row of teeth of the male organ will enter circumferential parts of the L-shaped recesses and remain there until as the female organ
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
spin a little faster than the male organ when they are released.
