On fabrique depuis longtemps des coussinets faits de matières telles que le laiton, le bronze, etc... et gar- nis d'un métal antifriction tel que le métal "blanc" à la fois sous forme de coquilles semi-cylindriques et sous forme de viroles ou douilles qui peuvent alors, dans cer- tains cas, être sectionnées pour constituer deux coquil- les ou demi-coussinets . Des coussinets de ce genre ont aussi été établis en employant des métaux durs tels que ltacier pour constituer la virole ou corps du coussinet ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

A further object of the invention is a process for producing lined bearings from flexible steel sheet of high tensile strength, i.e., inexpensive metal, and to '' nevertheless obtain the advantages deriving from the use of this superior material during the application of the anti-friction metal without the elimination or loss of these qualities,

Bearings have long been manufactured made of materials such as brass, bronze, etc ... and lined with an anti-friction metal such as "white" metal both in the form of semi-cylindrical shells and in the form. ferrules or bushings which can then, in certain cases, be cut to form two shells or half-shells. Bushings of this kind have also been made by employing hard metals such as steel to form the ferrule or body of the bush;
and in the manufacture of such bushings seamless tubes have been commonly employed as the backing or outer member of the bush, the tube being cut into lengths of suitable length and lined with white metal. , the sections then being able to be cut, if desired, to form filled half-pads intended for various uses.
The invention relates to a manufacturing process
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
white metal lined, steel backed bushings based on the application of a flat sheet of a flexible metal such as steel to form the outer ferrule or bush body, which results in cost saving very important in the cost of the material and gives a higher bearing of relatively low cost price.
To manufacture the ferrules intended to be lined with white metal, use is made of a strip 1 of steel sheet having passed through various sets of cylinders 2 so that it has a certain elasticity as well as a distinct grain. extending in the longitudinal direction of the material is a metal structure which is extremely tough and hard and has high tensile strength while being relatively inexpensive. It goes without saying that the steel sheet used can, without departing from the scope of the invention, be obtained other than by rolling, provided that it has the properties described.
Rectangular blanks 3 are cut from strip 1, the largest dimension of which is transverse to the strip, so that the direction of the grain is that indicated by the dotted lines in FIG. 3. In other words, the grain extends transversely with respect to the blank, which facilitates the shaping operations and makes it possible to give the blank much more regular curvatures.
In order to produce a perfectly tight seal between the adjacent edges of the blank 3 when the latter has been cylindrically curved, it has been found essential to give this blank a length somewhat greater than that which would actually be necessary for constitute a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
cylinder of the desired diameter and circumference. In other words, an excess of material is introduced into the blank, the role of which will be described below.
It is also desirable to first give the ends of the blank a curvature approaching that which they should have in the body of the pad so that said ends meet each other rectangularly when they are formed in the dies, which prevents the edge of one end cuts the flat part of the other and also prevents the outer edges of the two ends from resting against the surface of the die, which would have the effect of either rounding off those edges or of overuse the matrix.
In addition, it is very desirable to preliminarily give the middle portion of the blank a radius curvature smaller than the final curvature of the completed shell, in order to increase the pressure existing across the seal of the final shell. and to facilitate the bending of the two halves of the blank during the final shaping operation. By taking these precautions in shaping the ferrule, it has been possible to establish a seal which is sealed and resists the internal pressures which ordinarily occur during the molding operation by which the internal surface of the ferrule is. lined with anti-friction metal.
Blank 3 carries excess material, as indicated by the parts beyond the dotted lines A (Fig. 4). This blank is then placed in suitable materials and the ends 7 of said blank are bent towards each other of the material shown in FIG. 5, the curvature given 'these ends being applied.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
approximately that which they should receive in the finite viole. The blank resulting from this shaping operation (Fig. 5) is then placed on a die 5 (Fig.
6) having a semi-cylindrical opening 6, the radius of curvature of which is smaller than the radius of curvature which one wishes to give to the finished cylindrical bushing. The blank is then pressed into the opening of the die 6 using a complementary die (not shown) which receives a downward movement and acts on the middle part of the upper surface of the blank 3.
After this operation, the blank, which has received the partially open form shown in Fig. 6, is placed in the second die 8 (Fig. 7) and is then closed with the aid of a die 9 which acts by a semi-cylindrical cavity on the upper curved ends of the blank by forcing the metal of this blank to move radially inwardly in contact with the cylindrical surface of the die, the upper ends of which are curved. blank moving circularly inside the cavity of the upper die 9 until the moment when they meet to form the seal 10.
The movement of the metal is shown in Figures 7,9 and 12. When the strip is bent from the flat shape to a cylindrical shape, it is obviously necessary, in order to constitute a stop between its two ends, that there be either a withdrawal of the strip on the surface which constitutes the interior of the resulting cylinder, or an elongation of the part of the strip which becomes the exterior of the cylinder, or both a withdrawal of the first part and a lengthening of the second. We get a joint
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
etanohe by moving the metal of the band as shown in figure 9.
In this figure, the dotted lines 11, 12 indicate the positions which would be occupied by the initial end surfaces of the strip if no movement of the metal occurred, and the seal 10 indicates the position occupied by the ends. of the strip due to the fact that the metal moves to such an extent that said ends are forced into intimate contact over the full extent of the end faces.
Not only is the metal forced to move as shown, but the excess metal from the initial blank is forced into this joint and is then pushed or pushed back onto a portion of each end of the seam band. stretching approximately from the joint or contact plane of the ends to points located approximately 90 from this joint, as shown in Figures 7 and 12.
To create a contact between the ends of the strip following a plane of width equal to that of the strip, it is necessary to provide a corresponding excess of metal in the blank, and if the planned excess is even greater, not only the seal is sealed, but a metal pushing action is obtained which slightly increases the thickness of the blank on both sides. other side of the joint.
As the dies 8 and 9 have complementary hollows jointly constituting an exact cylinder, the discharge of the metal must necessarily be effected radially inwards, so that the shell retains an exactly cylindrical shape on the outside but that part of its surface internal is
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
located inside that of a cylinder, which makes it necessary to remove metal to form an exactly cylindrical opening in the ferrule.
When the ferrule has thus been formed as shown in FIG. 7, it is rotated by one. at an angle and it is pressed again with the help of the same dies (Fig. 8) to fix the metal in this new state, after which the ferrule is removed and, depending on the degree of excess thickness existing near the joint , the ferrule is machined to bring the hole of this ferrule to a cylindrical shape, or else, if the extra thickness is extremely small, the ferrule is lined directly without removing the excess metal, in which case the metal of the gasket will be well in- stretched a little thinner at the points located opposite the shell allowance, in order to produce concentric internal and external surfaces in the final bearing.
By the manufacturing process which has just been described, it is possible to constitute a ferrule comprising a seal which is leaktight in the sense that it withstands the internal pressures which are ordinarily involved in ordinary molding operations. This sealing is ensured by the rear zone of the contact existing between the adjacent ends of the strip, which zone has a radial thickness approximately equal to 1 '/ thickness of the blank, and it is made possible by the displacement metal in the manner already described.
The movement of the metal and this method of joining are facilitated by the preliminary curvature of the ends of the blank, by the fact that the middle part of the blank receives a smaller radius of curvature in the first shaping operation and by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
final compression of the blank. The latter operation has the effect of fixing the metal particles in their new relative positions by bringing the metal beyond the yield point and overcoming any tendency to open the joint, and although it is not always necessary, it is particularly advantageous in certain cases where use is made of a flexible and relatively thick sheet.
The ferrule of FIGS. 8, 9 and 12 is then treated so as to make the thickness of its wall uniform when there has been considerable upsetting and thickening of the metal, this treatment consisting in removing the excess metal. by a machining operation, In the case of thin-walled shells, that is to say in the case where the discharge is relatively low, this operation can sometimes be omitted, but this will obviously result in a less thickness of the packing above the parts of the ferrule which have been thickened.
The ferrule, if necessary after having been internally machined, is then cleaned and then subjected to the preliminary operations which are necessary to allow the anti-friction metal to be united to this ferrule.
For example, we can clean this shell with aid, then treat it with a metal such as tin and then place it in a centrifugal molding machine which makes rotating the bearings at a high speed while the molten antifriction metal is admitted into it, causing this metal to unite with the tinned surface of the ferrule and place itself concentrically inside this ferrule. In this way, subsequent operations are facilitated and one avoids
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
an exaggerated loss of anti-friction metal, given that there is no eccentricity between the ferrule and the gasket which could cause irregular machining of the gasket.
It is understood that the tin, if it is used, becomes alloyed with the antifriction metal when the latter is applied and unites in a homogeneous and uniform manner with the surface of the shell, which closes the seal and forms a smooth packing across the joint.
Regardless of how the packing is softened or otherwise applied to the ferrule, these two elements should be cooled rapidly and a low melting point metal should be used for the packing to prevent annealing. sensitive to the metal of the ferrule. In addition, it is important that the pressure acting across the seal be maintained below a value which would tend to deform the contour of the ferrule if the complete ferrule were subsequently cut into two half-bearings.
The pad according to the invention is extremely robust while being expensive. This whole pad can. be cut for the production of shells or half-shells, but it is preferable to leave it in the cylindrical state during the majority of the remaining manufacturing operations, since the seal is tight and there is considerable pressure across the seal. The pressure is due both to the way the blank is set and to the soldering effect of the gasket which in some cases penetrates the joint and behaves like glue or cement. internal between the ends in contact with part of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
their surfaces.
Likewise, owing to the choice of the material from which the blank is made and the direction of the grain of this blank, the ferrule can be easily and quickly shaped, and the tendency of this ferrule to open is reduced over time. minimum, which makes it possible to establish a tight seal, which is very desirable because of the simplification of subsequent operations and of the apparatus employed.
The term "white metal" used is understood to mean various metals and "antifriction" alloys suitable for their use in constituting bearing surfaces or supporting surfaces, and the invention is not limited to the application of any other - no alloy or any particular composition. Likewise, although it is preferable to use sheet steel to form the blanks and ferrules, other suitable metals and alloys may be used which are suitable for carrying out the operations and possess the required characteristics of a relatively low cost and with an internal grain texture.
