<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Entre la gaine 70 et la buselure 60 se trouve un espace dans lequel sont logés deux poussoirs 80 et 90 en forme d'anneau qui ne peuvent pas tourner avec la buselure 60,mais peuvent se dé- placer dans le sens de l'axe. Chaque poussoir présente une sur- face oblique $1 ou 91 respe3tivement contre laquelle les extré- mités des leviers 15 et 16 se posent et ensuite une rainure annulaire ¯82;

Assembly by rivets and tools for its realization.
The process is known which consists, in order to make rivet assemblies of parts which are accessible only from one side, in using hollow body rivets, in introducing these from the accessible side into the rivet hole and to transform the end of the body into an assembly head by inserting the tools on the same side into the rivet hole.
This riveting allows, 'well to rivet in places where the usual riveting by pin rivets is not possible; however, it has the disadvantage that the parts have a vacuum at each riveting point, a vacuum which in many of these, for example for the manufacture of tanks and other rivets which must be liquid and gas tight, is undesirable. As the subsequent obturation of its small or-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
openings by welded plugs or the like is critical and frequently not sufficiently secure, the field of application of a type of riveting is generally restricted to cases where the presence of these openings cannot constitute a problem.
The object of the invention is to allow riveting to be carried out also on one side of the part only, without having to take into account the above-mentioned drawbacks of sound riveting.
This object is achieved in the following way: the rivet is designed as a hollow rivet with a bottom lying on the side of the closure head; it is introduced into the room from the accessible side, so that the bottom is turned towards the inaccessible side; then, using tools which are introduced into the hollow part of the rivet, the part of the body which protrudes from the part is crushed outwards, approaching the bottom to thus transform it into the head of the part. closing.
A tool for performing the riveting operation is designed, for example, in the form of pliers and comprises two branches which, at their ends, bear small protrusions. These branches are introduced to the bottom of the rivet and then separated from one another; the protrusions thus form in the wall of the body of the rivet, directly above the bottom of the bulges which form the closure head.
By repeating this process at several points on the periphery of the rivet, the latter is given a peripheral bulge which securely assembles the parts to be riveted. instead of making this peripheral bulge in jerks, it can also be done continuously by rotating the gripper-shaped branches of the riveting tool during the spreading process.
In a modification of this tool, one of the branches of the Gripper is replaced by an element which rests on a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
rivet part not having to undergo any transformation, so that a single branch exerts pressure on the inner periphery of the hollow rivet body.
Finally, one can also use eccentric type blister tools, which can rotate around an axis parallel to the body of the rivet.
In the drawing, the invention is shown in one embodiment.
Fig.l is a cut through the rivet point with the rivet before its transformation;
Fig. 2 is a section through the rivet point after transformation of the rivet; FIG. 3 shows, in vertical longitudinal section, a riveting tool of simple design; Fig.4 is a section on an enlarged scale through the branches of the clamp along the line IV-IV of Fig.3; Figs.5 and 6 are cut lengthwise through the river tool with branches of tweezers capable of rotation; FIG. 7 is an external view of the device according to FIG. 6; FIG. 8 is a partial vertical section of a special embodiment of the body of the tool according to FIGS. 5 to 7, while FIG. 9 shows in top view a separate embodiment of the rivet;

According to fig. 1, the rivet has a bearing head forming a flange 1, a cylindrical hollow body 2 and a shutter bottom 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The body% exceeds the thickness of the parts to be assembled a and b by the quantity required to be able to form from this protruding part a bead 4 in accordance with FIG. Z.
The tool which is used to form this bead is pumped, according to Figures 3 and 4, with two branches 11 and 12 pivoting around an articulation bolt 10, branches which carry, at their end, small projections 13, 14 and which on the other hand are extended by the handles 15 and 16. A spring 17 tends to separate the handles and bring the branches 11-12 closer to one another.
As shown in FIG. 3, the branches 1 are introduced into the hollow space of the rivet as far as the bottom 3 and the handles 15, 16 are then brought together by pressure in the direction of the arrow.
In this way, the branches 11-12 move apart and the part of the body of the rivet which protrudes from the parts a, b bulges under the action of the projections 13, 14 :. By rotating the tool and repeating this process, this bulge can be formed all around the periphery of the rivet-
FIG. 5 shows a tool with a pliers-type device which, in principle, is identical to that of FIG. 3 and whose parts bear the reference marls that the last one has. The clamp is disposed by its axis 10 in a nozzle 20 and this is disposed in rotation in a sheath 25 which, through its lower end, rests at 26 on the bearing face 1 of the rivet.
The pin% 7, fixed in the sheath 25 and which engages in a groove 21 of the nozzle 20 prevents the nozzle from coming out. At the upper part of the nozzle there is a pin 40 which, on the side facing the rivet , has a conical flare or a cut-out part in the form of a wedge 41, on the oblique surfaces of which the ends of the branches of the clamp 15, 16 can slide. The journal 40 carries pins 43, 44 'which pass through slots 3, 24 of the nozzle 20 and over which, from above, the flange 51 of the nozzle 50 moving around the body 25 comes to take.

EMI5.4
way, the journal 40 descends, the levers of the pin 15,16 approach each other and the branches 11, ar- arent in proportion.
The rotational movement of the crank

hand 46 is transmitted through pins 43 and 44 to the nozzle 20 and thence through the hinge pin 10 to the gripper, so that the protrusions 13, 14, of the pine branches 11, there apart towards the 'outside and in rotational movement, form a circular bulge in the wall of the body of the rivet. When

clamp 11,. The tool can therefore be withdrawn from the rivet and then be used at another location.
In the case of the tool according to FIG. 5, it is necessary to exert pressure against the wall which admits the rivet, in order to move the branches of the clamp apart. In cases where it is not possible to exert this pressure (e.g. in ballast -

in accordance with FIGS. 6 and 7, there is also provided n clamp-type transformer tool, composed of the elements in FIG. 3 and again, indexed as in this occurrence. This transformer tool is housed in a nozzle 60 which is arranged in a rotational fashion.

tation in a sheath 70. This nozzle carries an extension in the form of four-sided intended to admit a hand crank.
Between the sheath 70 and the nozzle 60 there is a space in which are housed two ring-shaped pushers 80 and 90 which cannot rotate with the nozzle 60, but can move in the direction of the axis. Each pusher has an oblique surface $ 1 or 91 respectively against which the ends of levers 15 and 16 rest and then an annular groove ¯82;
or 92 as the case may be, in which the tips 83 and 93 of the levers bite through slots 73 and 74 of the sheath 70. These levers are located outside the sheath 70 and are extended by an articulation 100 in poi- gnages 84 and 94 which, in the rest state, are kept apart by the intervention of a spring 101. A plate 75 screwed onto the sheath 70 maintains the nozzle 60 in the exact position.
The instructions for using the tool are as follows:
The sheath 70 is placed by its lower end 71 on the support head of the rivet 1. At this time, as shown in Fig. 6, the gripper levers 15 and 16 are located against the outer ends of the slanted pusher surfaces 81 and 91; they are therefore separated and in correspondence, the gripper branches 11, 12 are brought together. If now the handles 84, 94 are brought closer, the pushers 83, 93 approach each other and the ends of the gripper branches slide on the oblique surfaces inward and the levers of clamp 11, 12 move apart so that the wall of the rivet undergoes an outward pressure.
If the crank disposed on the hexagon 81 is rotated at the same time, the tool in the form of a gripper is entered so that the continuous transformation into a bead of the end of the rivet takes place.
Oven avoid the driving of rivets in idle position while the tool is rotating, it is possible, in accordance with figure 8, to provide on the end of the sheath which must rest on the

In the tool according to Figures 1-.1 ,, only one transformer element is provided; it consists of a branch 1- with terminal protrusion 132 directed from J8té and posterior oblique face ¯I, 3, which can pivot on an articulation 121 in a slot of the bolt 125, This bolt is housed in rotation

turns the dtappDi head of the rivet and is made elastic in the direction of the radius by slots 166;
a conical surface 134 is then provided which collaborates with the counter-e8ne 135 of the nozzle 136 capable of displacement along the axis, so that by lowering this nozzle, the ends of the sheath 130 are drawn towards inside, so as to fix the head of

closing. The radial thrust of the translate element 120 is effected by axial displacement of a nozzle 140, of which the. the lower conical recess 141 rests against the posterior oblique surface 123. This nozzle 140 is assembled by pins 151, guided in slots 137 of the sheath 130. assembled with the outer annular nozzle 150. The pressure of the conical surfaces 134 and 135 against each other actuates a spring 160 disposed between the nozzles 140 and 136.
By the intervention of the outwardly directed pins 165 and 166 through the sheath slots 183, the nozzle 136 can be lifted against the counteracting action of the spring and thereby the finishing of the rivet is eliminated.
To operate the riveting, the nozzle tool 136 is first placed on the support head 1, and the pins are released.
EMI7.6
ohes lô5 and 156, the nozzle 136 is pushed forward by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
spring 160; it pulls, by means of its faceconique 135, the split part of the sheath 130 inwards and thus fixes the rivet. Now the nozzle 150 and hence the nozzle unevenly are pushed downwards and at the same time the bolt 125 turns; the protrusion 122, which has now taken a rotational movement, exerts a lateral thrust on the wall of the body of the rivet, which has the consequence of shaping the rivet.
The fastening device thus prevents both the movement of the entire tool relative to the rivt by the unilateral thrust of the element 120 that the rivet retracted.
The tool according to Figures 13 and 14 consists of a body 150 with a cylindrical extension 151 fitting exaptly into the hollow part of the body of the rivet. In the body 150 is disposed, a little eccentrically, a shaft 152 capable of rotation which carries its lower end, an eccentric plate 153 and, at its upper end, a hexagonal 154. The eccentric 153 has little by little fter the same diameter as the 'hollow part of the rivet' and the eccentricity of the parts 151 and 152 is calculated so that for a given position the eccentric 153 and the extension 154 overlap exactly, so that the tool can be easily inserted into the rivet.
to operate the riveting, the body 150 is placed in the position indicated and reflected in figure 13 of the eccentric
153, on the rivet. The body 150 is then fixed and the axis 152 is rotated by the intervention of the crank. The eccentric thus arrives on one side beyond the reach of the extension 151 and shapes, as shown in FIG. 14, in the wall of the rivet. a bulge directed on this side. The extension 151 then exerts the corresponding counterpressure on a part of the wall of the body of the rivet which is not subjected to shaping. By repeating this process several times, after having rotated the body 150 through a certain angle each time, it is possible to form a

The rotation of the shaping tool can, in all cases, and in particular when it comes to shaping rivets of relatively large dimensions, naturally also take place through the intervention of a motor.
