<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

"Improvements to a Method and Means for Showing Motive, Advertising and Others."
The invention relates to a method and to novel apparatuses for demonstrating the effects of movements, animation or change of position on the part of representations of animated or inanimate objects, said effects being obtained by the application of the principles of color absorption and those of visual impression persistence for the purposes of advertising, signage for shows and the like,
Said invention provides a novel method and apparatus for producing the appearance of movement of the object shown in -a direction other than tranar.

versal to the layout surface.
More specifically, it contemplates a method and apparatus for giving an observer the impression of changing the distance at which a figurative object is from him.
Its object is the realization of a process and means by which a motif can be brought to light in a manner likely to make a very strong impression on the mind of the observer due to a sudden, mystifying and striking appearance of the object in substantially the immediate vicinity of the observer after he has generally seen it in the distance.
It also provides for the construction of signaling means for level crossings, crossroads, dangerous twists and turns of other places on the main road where warning signals are necessary.
Finally, it includes the adaptation of the above-mentioned principles to any signa] (or other and to advertising.
Referring to the attached drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention applied to a claim pattern.
Figure 2 is a view similar to that of Figure 1 showing means by which another effect can be obtained.
FIG. 3 is a perspective view showing, applied to an advertising motif, an embodiment of the invention by which the illusion of intermittent movement or of substantially continuous movement can be given.
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of an application of the invention to a warning signal.

Fig. 5 is a sectional perspective showing how the invention may be adapted for advertising purposes on a store front, and
FIG. 6 is a diagram of an electric ignition system suitable for use with the device of FIG. 5.
Referring to the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, this is an example of application of the invention to an advertising motif located at the edge of a road. A sign or other display surface 1 mounted on any support at a certain distance from the roadway R, is arranged almost parallel to the road so as to be easily seen by a passer-by a little before arriving at his height. The surface 1 has a background 2 white or some other neutral and light color, that is, of a color which does not change much under rays of spectral light of a distinctive color.
On background 2 is shown, in red pigment, image 3 of a man holding a tire in his hand as if to offer it and whose other hand is raised as if to signal the person to whom to stop. he tightens the tire. Instead of being in a wheel, the image can be in various colors of the red end of the spectrum, such as: orange, magenta, pink, etc ... used either singly or in combination.
In addition, image 3 may be any other distinctive pigmentary color provided that the other conditions are suitable for the use of this color, said conditions being, for example, the nature of the background and the nature or the character of the light sources with which the display surface is to be illuminated. A wording 4 suitable for the oneus advertisement, for example the words "Good Tires", is shown on the display area; in the example shown these words are colored in neutral pigment and

rolls, image 3 will be erased since these spectral rays correspond as colors to the color of the pin or the pigments in which the ima is 3..urea. Under this lighting, wording 4 will be visible in deep brown, On the other hand, when the available surface will be illuminated by rays of blue light, image 3 will appear appreciably black on a appreciably white background and label 4 will also appear very dark or sensitive. black on the light background.

The invention provides for the instantaneous and simultaneous erasure of the whole image 3 after its highlighting for a given time and the highlighting of the image 9 so that, for the observer, the effect product is that of a man leaping from sign 1 has a position right against the edge of the road and the visual sensation is that of a man leaping directly at the passer-by which impresses the latter with a very hallucinating and gripping way. This effect arises from the sudden illumination synchronism which is obtained by a system comprising a current source 11 and an igniter 12 which may be provided with a fixed disc 13 provided with contacts 14 and 15.
A shaft 16 rotates a contact arm 17 which passes successively over 14 and 15.
A conductive wire 18 goes from the current inlet 11: to the shaft 16 or to the contact arm 17. Jn conductive wire 19 is also led from 11 to each of the bulbs 5, 6 and 10.
A wire 20 is connected to the contact 14 and to the blue light bulbs 6. A conductive wire 21 is connected to the contact 15 and to the red light bulbs 5 and 10; While the arm 17 sweeps the contact 14, the sur-

exposure face 1 will be flooded with rayona of blue light, the imagg 3 will emerge appreciably in black aur fon-dy and the wording 4 will also appear appreciably black on a white background; During this operating cycle, the entire surface of the main sign 1 will be highlighted but the additional sign 7 will not be illuminated.
Imitating the next one, the arm 17 will sweep the contact 15 and the wheel light bulbs% 5 and 10 will be on.
At this time, image 3 will be instantly erased - but the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
wording will remain highlighted, substantially black, on a white background. Incidentally when the image 3 is erased or disappeared, the image 9 on the sign 7 will be highlighted and will appear appreciably white and very bright on the black background 8 due to the illumination of the image by rays of red light and the contrast between the figure of the image and the background surrounding it. Since the background is noticeably black, the effect will be that of a single man standing in the attitude shown in Figure 1.
One could, of course, substitute for the advertisement a wording giving indications on the state or on the dangers of the road.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 a main display surface 21 has a neutral pigment and cairo background 22. An image 23 is shown in red pinch and an advertising or other pattern 24 is drawn in a pile of some color. dark and neutral, such as brown, Indian red, tobacco, etc. ... 25 red light bulbs and blue light bulbs are provided.
The auxiliary exposure surface 27 has a background 28 of a neutral and light colored pigment on which is shown an image 29 which, in the present example, is red or a combination of pigmenta from the red end of the spectrum. . A bright white bulb.
30 is disposed on the upper side of the display surface 27. There is provided a current source 31 and an automatic igniter 32 provided with a disc provided with contact strips 34 and 35. On the shaft 36 is located a contact arm 37 which passes over the bars 34 and 35. A conductive wire 38 goes from 31 to the shaft 36 or to the contact arm 37. A wire 38 is led from 31 to each of the am-

white 30. A lead wire 40 goes from the contact strip 34 to the blue bulbs 20 and a lead wire 41 is led from the contact strip 35 to the red bulbs 25 and to the white bulb 30.
While the arm 37 sweeps the bar 34, the exposure surface 21 will be flooded with rays of white light from the bulbs 26, thus highlighting the ima, 23 in the color in which

it is represented, key! 3t-à-dir-- in red, and also highlighting the motif 24 in its respective color, that is to say in brown, the two manifestations appear on the background White. At this time the white bulb 30 will not be on. When the contact arm 37 passes to the bar 35, the white light bulbs 26

will turn off and the rouspa 25 light bulbs and 30 white light bulb will light simultaneously.
Since 1 limap 23 is sworn. In rouoa and the exhibition surface 21 is then flooded with rays

Light bulbs rou, s ± s 55 and white light bulbs 56 are arranged so as to allow the exposure surface 43 to be flooded with rays of red light and rays of white light. Bright bulbs. white 57,58 and 59 are arranged so as to flood the exposure surfaces 46,47 and 48 with rays of white light, respectively.
EMI8.3
An automatic igniter 60 is provided with a dial 61 provided with contact strips 62, 63, 64, 65 and 63. The igniter shaft 67 carries a contact arm 68.
EMI8.4
From a current source 59 a conducting wire 70 goes to 1 \ 1r -: - bre 67 or to the horn arm, ', act 68. A conducting wire 71 is led from 59 to all the bulbs mentioned above. above.
When the contact arm 68 passes over the strip 62 the exposure surface 42 will be flooded with rays of white light from the bulbs 56 and
EMI8.5
will highlight 1 fima 44 in roug3 and the wording 45an. green on a white background. At this time, the exposure surfaces 40, 47 and 48 are substantially invisible.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
contact arm 68 will switch to band 93, white lights 56 will go out, and red lights 55 will come on. As the contact arm
68 will run through the entire length of the strip 63, it will successively attack the contact strips 64, 65 and 66.
Therefore, when the arm 68 comes into contact with the strip 63, it will simultaneously contact the bar 64 and the white light 67 will come on, thus illuminating the exposure surface 46 with rays of white light. red bulbs
55 will light up the deposition surface 42 will be flooded with rays of red light and, therefore, the image
44, being represented enrougp, will be totally erased, while the wording, being represented in green and therefore contrasting with and complementary to the color of the rays of spectral light, appears ... tra appreciably black on the white background 43 .
At the instant when the image 44 is faded, the image 52 will be flooded with rays of white light from the bulbs 57 and this image will therefore appear bright red against the black background 49 or. some other color is neutral and dark and it will appear to the observer that the image 44 jumps from the exposure surface 42 to the position occupied by the exposure surface 46. Since the bottom of the exposure surface is exposure 46 is of a neutral and dark color, this background will itself be substantially invisible under the rays of white light, given in particular the brightness with which the image 52 will be highlighted under this lighting.
Continuing to move, the contact arm 68 will then pass over the bar 65, thus turning off the lights 57 and closing the circuit of the bulbs 58 to flood the exposure surface 47 with rays of white light.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
still its way, said arm will pass over the contact strip 66, thereby turning off the bulbs 58 and closing the circuit of the white light bulbs
59 to flood the exposure surface 48 with rays of white light. In the meantime, the arm 68 is continually in contact with the strip 63, so that the red lights 55 remain on and, therefore, the wording 45 is constantly manifested in the sight of the observer.
The optical effect produced will be the impression that the man holding the tire jumps from the exhibition area 42 and by bung on the ground rushes until he has reached the position occupied by the surface. exposure 48 bout at. side of the road.
Pigment colors other than the wheel can be used, but it is preferable to choose pigments with a distinctive coloria. The color in which the wording 45 will be shown must be distinctive and contrast with the colors in which the images 44, 52, 53 and 54 will be highlighted. The sources of light rays 55 will be modified with regard to the color of their spectral rays according to the changes made to the colors of the pigments employed to represent the exposed patterns.
The embodiment shown in FIG. 4 relates to an equalization system.
On a portion of a main / ipal exposure surface 72 are applied a bottom area 73 of neutral and dark plantar color and a bottom area 74 of neutral and light color. On area 74 is shown in some distinctive pigmentary color, such

are arranged behind panes 85, 87 and 38 respectively and one or more white light bulbs 93, 94 and 95 are arranged above the panels arranged 83, 84 and 85, respectively, to flood with rays of light white the surface of each panel.
An automatic igniter 96 comprises a disc 97 provided with contact strips 98, 99, 100 and 101.
Tree 102 bears. a contact arm 103. From a current source 104 a conductor wire 105 is connected by connection wires to each of the aforementioned light bulbs. A lead wire 106 also leads from 104 to shaft 102. A lead wire 107 likewise runs from 104 to white light bulbs 81, so these bulbs continually burn and continually highlight the word "Caution" (attention;) . A wire 108 goes from the contact strip 88 to each of the red bulbs 79 and to the white bulbs 78. A lead wire 109 leads from the contact strip 99 to the white light bulbs 93 and 90.
A lead wire 110 is led from the contact strip 100 to the white light bulbs 94 and 91 and a lead wire 111 is led from the contact strip 101 to the white light bulbs 85 and 92.
When the arm 103 passes over the bar 98, the circuit will be closed simultaneously for the light bulbs wheels 79 and for the white light bulbs 78. Consequently, the ima 75 will be flooded with rays of red light and will appear sensibly. black on the neutral and clear color background 74 and the rays coming from the white light bulbs 78 will be transmitted through the red window 76.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
Consequently, a driver arriving near the system will believe he sees the glowing headlights of a car coming towards him, image 55 appearing to him to be appreciably black on the area with a white background 74. He will also see the manifestation 80 which constitutes a warning word which will appear with a shining wheel on a black background due to the illumination (There is white light, At this time panels 83, 84 and 85 will not be illuminated.
When the contact arm 103 leaves the bar
98 and will arrive at bar 99, the white lamps 93 will light up as well as the lamps 90, although the car shown on the exhibition panel 83 will be flooded with white light and will present the appearance of a green automobile arriving straight on the observer, the rays coming from the luminous white bulbs 90 passing through the windows wheel% 86 giving the illusion that the automobile is provided with bright red headlights. Since the representation of a headlight rim 77 on the display surface 72 is of a neutral and dark color, this rim will appear substantially black under the illumination by rays of red light and, therefore. , the lighthouse representation will be clearly defined.
This is also true of the figures of 'borda 89 which are painted, in a neutral and dark pigmentary color surrounding transparencies 86, 87 and 88. When the contact arm 103 leaves the contact strip 98 the red lamps turn on. will turn off. instantly as well as the white lamps 78 and, consequently, the ima 75 will become invisible.
However, the bulbs 81 will continue to burn and the driver still verms the word "Stop" on the bottom area 73? When the contact arm leaves the contact strip 99 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
will switch to contact strip 100, the white lamps 93 and 90 will go out and the illuminated bulbs 9 94 and 91 will come on so that the Automobile figuration 84 will be illuminated by rays of white light and will become clearly visible while the headlight configurations will constitute an alarm signal. When the contact arm 103 leaves the bar 100 and passes to the bar 101,
the white light bulbs 91 and 94 will go out and the bulbs 92 and 95 so as to highlight the car finish 85 and the headlights 88 that it includes, the projection rou passing through the transparencies 88 directed etanb on the road. To a driver approaching the system he will appear to see a car coming straight towards him from one side of the road and therefore the need to drive carefully will be strongly reminded.
FIG. 5 represents an application of the invention to the highlighting of an advertisement. A storefront 112 is provided with a watch 113 which, in the example given, is red in color, and substantially opaque except for part of its surface area, which part is made substantially transparent by the conditions of the store. lighting, Red light bulbs 115 and blue light bulbs 116 are arranged along the underside of the window 113 and on it any suitable ad wording can be placed 117 in any distinctive plantar color, for example blue,

When the bulbs are on, the interior of the display case is flooded with rays of white light which make the goods 119 visible. through the portion 114 of the ice 113, said goods being at all other times invisible due to the opacity of this ice. The niche 118 has an open front and it is placed against the internal face of the mirror
113.
On the sidewalk along the front of the store is painted a layout area 121, preferably in red color, and within the framework of this area is painted, for example, an arrow 122 in white color.
FIG. 6 gives the diagram of an electric circuit for the automatic ignition of the various groups of lamps. This circuit comprises an igniter 123 capable of comprising a disc 124 provided with contact strips 123 and 126. The shaft 127 of the igniter carries a contact arm.
128 set to overlap the contact strips 125 and 126. From a current source 129 a lead wire 130 goes to shaft 137. A lead wire 131 is led from 129 to each of the bulbs 115, 116 and 120.
A lead wire 132 goes from the contact strip 125 to the blue light bulb 116. A lead wire 133 is led from the contact strip 126 to the red light bulbs 115 and also to the white light bulbs 120.
When the contact arm 128 passes over the strip 125 the circuit is closed for all the blue light bulbs 116 and the glass 113 is flooded with blue light which makes it entirely opaque and highlights the wording 117 substantially in color. white on the substantially black background provided by said mirror 113, At this time the goods inside the niche 118 will be hidden from view due to the opaque nature of the glass 113. Likewise, at this time the area 121 will appear colored
