<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Method and apparatus for welding dental parts.
This invention relates to the electric welding of dental parts such as plates, hooks, etc. made of stainless steel.
It relates to a method and an apparatus making it possible to easily obtain welded parts, the different parts of which occupy the desired position with respect to each other to adapt exactly to the patient's jaw, which is very difficult to achieve in using welding between electrode tips generally used to assemble dental parts.
According to the invention, the parts to be welded are placed in the desired relative position on a jaw molding, one
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
applies an electrode with a large surface area to one of the parts so as to insert it in the soldering circuit and the parts are welded to each other by applying the tip of a tapered electrode to the place where they are in contact at the point chosen for the weld.
To give the operator the freedom of his hands, the molding carrying the parts to be welded is placed on a support provided with a clamp intended to hold one of the parts on the molding, and the large-surface electrode is held in contact with this part by an articulated arm, which allows the operator to have the other part with one hand in the desired position relative to the first and to apply the tapered electrode to the first with the other hand the place where the pieces touch.
A welding device making it possible to carry out these operations is shown by way of example in the appended drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the apparatus, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of part of this apparatus, with the jaw casting in vertical section.
A base plate 1 carries two bushes 2 and 3 provided with clamping screws 4. In the bush 2 is planted vertically a rod 5 surmounted by a plate 6 intended to support the jaw molding 7 on which are arranged, ready to be welded together, a plate 8 and a hook 9 made of stainless steel. The plate 6 is provided with a clamp 10 with clamping screw 11, which keeps the plate 8 firmly applied to the molding 7 by pressing on an intermediate pad 12, made of rubber or other suitable material, placed on this plate 8.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The sleeve 3 supports an articulated arm 13 provided with knee pads 14 and provided at its free end with a collar 15 in which is clamped an electrode 16 formed preferably of a brush of metal wires to provide a large contact surface. This electrode 16 is connected by a wire 17 to one of the terminals of a transformer 18 to the other terminal of which is connected a wire 19 connected to the second electrode 20, the end of which is very tapered.
To weld the hook 9 to the plate 8, the operator brings the articulated arm 13 into the position shown in dotted lines in the drawing, so as to bring the large-area electrode 16 into contact with the hook 9, then he applies the tip of the tapered electrode 20 to the plate 8, at a point 21 of the latter located opposite the place where two parts are in contact. When the current passes through the welding circuit, there is a very strong heating of the metal of the plate 8 at point 21 due to the high resistance offered to the passage of the current through the tip of the electrode 20, and the two parts 8 and 9 are welded together by fusion of the metal.
During this operation, the hook 9 heats up only slightly at the place where the electrode 16 is applied, thanks to the large contact surface thereof.
It is preferable that the parts to be welded and the electrodes are arranged so that current flows through both parts during the welding operation, as is the case in the example shown in the drawing. However, this is not essential, and one can also operate by applying the two electrodes on the same part, provided that the tapered electrode is applied opposite the place where the two parts are in contact. contact. In this case the part on which the electrodes are applied plays the role of resistance

electrical, a property which stainless steel possesses to a high degree, and it heats up sufficiently at the point of application of the tapered electrode to weld itself there to the other part which remains outside the electrical circuit .
The temporary weld obtained by the process according to the invention is sufficiently strong so that the parts thus assembled can be handled without deforming them in order to subject them to final welding by the welding process between electrode tips, for example. .
Of course, the invention can be applied to the welding of any dental parts other than the exemplary plates and hooks and the apparatus shown in the drawing could be modified in its details to. adapt to the treatment of parts of particular shape.
