MEMOIRE DESCRIPTIF DEPOSE A L'APPUI DE LA DEMANDE D'UN BREVET D'INVENTION pour Changement de vitesse formée par
Monsieur Frederick Henry SANDHERR.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY FILED IN SUPPORT OF THE APPLICATION FOR A PATENT OF INVENTION for Gear change formed by
Sir Frederick Henry SANDHERR.
3144 Locust Street, St Louis (State of Missouri) United States
This invention concorno transmissions or planetary gear changes and differentials *
The essential aim of the invention is to. realize a transmission forming a progressive change of speed controlled by a couple of forces
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and thus making it possible to ensure the direct drive of a member driven by a driving member when the two forces of the couple are equal and its driving indirect when they are unequal.
The invention relates to the combination of planetary and differential gears between driving and driven members. A combination in which an internal gear attached to the driving member causes by means of planetary gears and differential gears a movement of. rotation accompanied by transmission of force to the driven member, the ratio between the speeds of the two organs being automatically adjusted by the difference between the torques of the two organs and decreasing progressively and automatically when the two torques approach each other. the same size and reach the same vitosso or, in twists of a trade, in direct engagement when the couples are equal,
the maneuvering levers and the friction or other devices used to effect the gear changes being thus eliminated.
Various other objects aimed at by the invention will become apparent on reading the description which follows which, moreover, only relates to one embodiment, various changes being able to be made to it without departing from its mind.
In the accompanying drawings: -
FIG. 1 is a vertical section of the driving and driven members showing in side elevation the transmission by planetary and differential gears.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the final driven differential member, taken through line 2-2 of Figure 1.
The figure is a longitudinal section of the transmission as a whole.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of one of the planetary cogs.
Figure 5 is the end view assuming one looks in the direction indicated in Figure 4 by the arrow.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of a planetary second gear.
Figure 7 is an end view of it assuming one looks in the direction indicated in Figure 6 by the arrow.
In these figures, the number 1 designates a suitable floating support shaft, one end of which ¯ is mounted in an ad hoc bearing 2 carried by the wall of an internal gearbox 4. The open end of this box 4 is closed by a plate 5 and the gearbox itself rotates under the action of a suitable driving member 6 such as a drive shaft or a clutch member so that said bonito can itself be considered as making , part of the training organ.
A sleeve 7 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 1 and is fitted at its internal end with a carrier disc 8 suitably fixed and provided on one of its faces with a suitable bearing 9. A certain number of shafts equidistant rotary 10 are journaled in the disc 8 and in its bearing 9; on each of them is fixed a planet gear 11 engaged with

the teeth of the internal speed boot 4. A pinion 12 is also fixed so as to rotate with each shaft 10 and meshed with the intermediate gears 13 mounted to rotate on shafts 14 fixed to the disc 8, these intermediate gears 13 meshing with the teeth of an idle gear 15 rotatable relative to the sleeve 7.

A relatively short sleeve 20 is rotatably mounted on the sleeve 7 and is provided at its inner end with a suitable carrier disc 21 provided on one side thereof with a bearing 22. A number of rotating shafts. equidistant bits23 are journaled in the plate and the bearing 22; on each of them is fixed a satellite pinion 2l \. meshing with the teeth of the internal gearbox 4. A pinion 25 is also fixed so as to rotate with each shaft 23 and directly meshes with the teeth of the idle pinion 15.
Another pinion 26 is wedged on the other end of sleeve 20 and meshes with a pair of opposed differential pinions 27 rotatably mounted on shafts 28 carried by differential boot 19, these differential pinions 27 mutually meshing with one another. the differential pinions 17, as shown in figure 1.
The differential box 19 is designed at 29 to allow the attachment of a suitable driven shaft 30 such as, for example, the shaft going to the rear axle of an automobile (although there is here at - @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
cune limitation) which allows this box to be included in the driven organ. The device is, moreover, by no means limited to automotive applications; it can be used wherever a transmission of force with variable torque forces is required.
With this device, the changes from one gear to another are accomplished automatically and in a correct proportion with respect to the load exerted by the driving organ, which eliminates the skill factor in changing from one gear to another since the appropriate time to make this passage is no longer left to the discretion of the operator.
During operation, when the internal gearbox 4 is rotated, a force is produced which tends to rotate the planet gears 11 and 24 The planet gears 11 carry pinions 12 which rotate with them and which mesh with intermediate pinions. diaries 13 which, in turn, mesh with a idler gear 15. The rotational force exerted on idler gear 15 by satellites 11 therefore has the same direction as the direction of rotation of satellites 11 and of internal box 4 The planet wheels 24 carry pinions 25 which rotate with them and which mesh directly with an idle pinion 15.
The rotational force exerted on the idler gear 15 by the satellites 24 is therefore in the opposite direction to that of the satellites 24
The pressure exerted on the idler pinion 15 by the pinions 25, by the planet wheels 24, gives rise to the pinions 12 a resisting force diametrically opposed to the force transmitted to the pinions 12 by the internal box 4, through the intermediary of the satellites 11, but having the same meaning. the result of these two @

forces is therefore a pressure exerted on:
- the arbros 10 of the disc 8, and tending to rotate the disc in the driven direction that the internal boot 4 Similarly, the pressure exerted by the pinions 12 on the idler pinion 15 causes on the pinions 25 a resistant force of same direction, but diametrically opposed to the force transmitted to the pinions 25 by the internal gearbox ', - via the satel-

lites 2., the resultant being a pressure exerted on the shafts 23 of the disc 21 and tending to rotate this disc also in the same direction as the internal speed boot 4.
As the pinions 12 have a smaller diameter than the pinions 25, the pressure exerted on the idler 15 by the pinions 12 is

rather larger than the one which had to do with the pinions 25. As a result, pinion 25 will be forced to rotate in the same direction as internal gearbox 4 thus turning pinion 25 and rolling the planet wheels 24 on the internal boot 4 turning with it, so that the disc 21

To the driving forces of the discs 8 and 21 are opposed the resistant forces of the driven member 30 via the flange 29, the shafts 18 and 28, the differential pinions 17 and 27, the gears 16 and 26 and the sleeves. 7 and 20. If these resistance forces, or the driven torque are greater than the motor forces or the motor torque, the disc 8 will be forced to rotate in the opposite direction to the inner gear boot 4, which will automatically increase the speed. speed of the disc 21, the resultant being a reduced speed of the driven member 3 due to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Differential pinions 17 and 27. The more the reverse speed difference of the discs 8 and 21 is rumored, the more the speed of the driven member 30 will be reduced.
The motor force exerted on the disc 8 being greater than the force exerted on the disc 21, the resistance forces being equal, the speed of the disc 21 year before will always be greater than the speed of the disc 8 in the opposite direction. .
By increasing the speed of the driving member and consequently the motor torque and by reducing the torque driven, for example to overcome starting resistance or resistance to acceleration, the motor forces and resistance forces will gradually be equalized. on the disks 8 and 21, which will gradually approach the speed of the driven member until the driving torque and the driven torque are equal, when the two disks 8 and 21 remain fixed relative to the inner box 4 and rotate with it and with the driving member at low speed, as does the member 30 driven by means of the final differential. This gives the direct plug.
