<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

"Improvements in transmissions and particularly in four-wheel drive transmissions"
The invention relates to transmissions and more particularly to four-wheel drive transmissions.
One of the objects of the invention is a casing for a four-wheel drive transmission, the casing comprising three compartments, a part of the transmission casing forming a double compartment which contains the usual gear change gears and the shift gears. transmission and being provided with a partition disposed between the two sets of gears, while
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
that the third compartment takes the form of a crankcase cover bolted to the lower part of the main crankcase under the transmission gears and carries the control mechanism for the front wheels.
Another object of the invention is a transmission casing comprising a central partition placed between the transmission gears and the usual gear change gears, a partition bearing the mechanism for controlling the transmission shaft, a transmission cover. housing being bolted under the transmission gears; this cover carries the mechanism comprising bevel gears at an acute angle for the control of the amber motor of the front shifts. Still another object of the invention is a cannulated gearshift and transmission casing, forming a whole, with three one-piece walls which can be bored at the same time, thereby ensuring precise alignment of shafts.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a four-wheel drive transmission which can be easily and precisely assembled and which is designed to maintain extremely precise alignment of the shafts and the bearings or bearings, which are necessary to support and to maintain. By controlling the gears, as well as precise alignment, of the gears themselves, the invention provides a remarkably rigid support for the aforementioned shafts and gears, which reduces the deflection of the above-mentioned shafts and gears to a value very close to zero. 'trees and this gives rise to obvious advantages of duration, silence and the possibility of supporting very high torques without the organs being subjected to overloads.
Another object of the invention is a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Straight-line control of both front and rear wheels whereby the universal joints operate normally at zero angle and only slightly deviate from that angle when the springs flex.
The invention also aims at the incorporation of the combined mechanism in an assembly which brings the transmission gears close to the motor, the aforementioned objects and the various new characteristics of the invention will be described more fully below, the mode The preferred embodiment of said invention being shown in the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which is a sectional view of a transmission for four-wheel drive made in accordance with the invention.
The device comprises a casing 1 comprising a vertical partition 2 placed between its ends and dividing said casing into two compartments 3 and 4. The casing is pierced with a longitudinal bore providing openings 5, 6 and 7 in its ends. three vertical walls. These bores 5, 6 and 7 are all three concentric and they can be drilled at the same time, which ensures correct alignment of their axas.
Likewise, the bores 8, 9, 10 and 11 of the intermediate or return shaft can also be drilled at the same time, which ensures the axial alignment of the bores of said shaft. the chamber or compartment 3 contains the usual four gear change wheels while the chamber or compartment 4 contains the transmission gears; a separate housing cover 12 is fixed to the bottom of the housing 1 and is keyed to it by means of transverse keys 63; it is, moreover, bolted
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
on said housing. The cover 12 contains the toothed wheel 48 for controlling the front wheels which is thus placed under the compartment 4 of the transmission gears.
During the assembly of the gears, the double row ball bearing 14 is pressed into the rolling cage 15 and fixed in place by means of the elastic sheer 16 which fits in the groove formed in said cage. The splined shaft 17 is then pushed through the internal bore or raceway of the bearing 14 and the elastic ring 18 is fitted into a groove in. this effect in the shaft 17. We then slide the toothed wheel 19 on the splines on the right side of the shaft 17 and the bearing 20 is pressed on the right journal of the shaft 17, said bearing being held in place. by the elastic ring 21. This assembly is the only one made at the workbench where the maximum visibility and accessibility is achieved.
The assembly comprising Marble 17, the bearing 14, the bearing cage 15, the toothed wheel 19 and the bearing 20, with their locking parts constituted by the elastic rings 16, 18 and 21, is placed in the housing at through the bore 7 at the rear of the housing 1, these components being locked in place by the shoulder screw 22 engaging in the bearing race 15. It is clear that the bearing, placed in relation to the intermediate wall 2, supports the main drive shaft 17 in the radial direction and in the longitudinal direction, the bearing itself opposing the longitudinal movement of the shaft 17, while allowing it to rotate.
It is, of course, obvious to anyone familiar with the assembly of transmissions.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
that the two shift gears 23 and 24 are threaded on the splines on the left side of the mule 14 when the shaft 17 comes into place and the guide bearing 25 is set on the left trunnion of the the shaft 17, said sliding bearing, to come to occupy its position, inside the pinion gear 26 in the usual manner. Pinion 26 is also known in the industry as a clutch pinion since the left or tail end of said pinion 26 forms a guide for the clutch.
It is obvious that this assembly is carried out in exactly the same way as that of the main shaft of an ordinary gear change, with the difference that the bearing 14 is blocked on the shaft 17 by a shoulder. formed on said shaft and that the elastic ring 18, in combination with the rolling cage 15, with the elastic ring 16 and with the shoulder screw 22, allows the free rotation of the shaft 17 while supporting the thrusts coming from from any direction.
This organization limits the longitudinal movement of the shaft 17 to a trio of low value in one direction or the other. It is obvious that this relative arrangement of the organs makes it possible to treat this assembly at the. usual way and that at the same time it realizes a continuous housing both for the speed change gears and for the transmission gears, with a complete vertical wall on both sides of the two series of gears, the wall 2 being common to both compartments.
The raceway 27 is provided with a double row ball bearing 28 pressed into its end, as shown in the drawing. An elastic ring 29 is engaged in a groove provided for this purpose in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
cage 27 and a bearing 30 is pressed into the end in the cage 27, to the right of figure 1 and right up against the elastic ring 29. The hub 31 of the toothed wheel 32 is then pushed through the bearings 28 and 30 Previously placed in the rolling cage 27. A nut 33 is then aimed at the right end of the hub 31.
A traction of a certain value of the nut 33 then has the effect of subjecting the bearings 28 and 30 to a preliminary load and of very rigidly supporting the toothed wheel 32 both radially and axially. The nut 33 can then be locked in place by using any suitable known nut locking device,
Although not shown in the drawing, the end of the hub 31 is preferably splined or conically shaped so that the universal joint 34 can be easily attached to said end to provide control. of the transnission shaft going to the rear wheels of the vehicle.
The whole assembly consisting of the wheel 32, the cage 27, the bearings 28 and 30, the Mastic ring 29 and the nut 33 is slid into the bore 7 of the housing in which the outer diameter of the cage 27 fits exactly. The wheel 32 is provided with an annular face 35 internally ground and with a conical guide part 36 which slides on the external diameter of the bearing 20 and the flange 37 of the cage 27 abuts against the corresponding shoulder of the housing. main to which it is fixed by screws 38.
It will be noted that a clearance is provided between the right-hand end of the shaft 17 and the bottom of the housing provided in the wheel 32. This organization provides a completely independent support for the wheel 32 and for its
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
hub 31, as well as an outer support for the right-hand end of the shaft 17, which makes it possible to produce a one-piece housing with gears of
EMI7.1
tranuissiond separated from the gearshift engroenges by a vertical partition 2; a partition is thus provided on each side of the transmission gears and a partition on each side of the speed change gears, the middle partition 3 being common to both sides.
As a result, three vertical walls are produced and, by the aforementioned combination of mechanical elements, a balanced device is obtained with maximum precision (con-
EMI7.2
used during operation) due to the fact that the walls intended to receive the bearings are all or one-piece casing bored in line at the same time in a set /. This construction also provides much greater rigidity than would be possible by using a caxter divided by a vertical plane.
The intermediate shaft or countershaft 40 housed in the transmission compartment is assembled by pressing the bearing 41 with double row of balls in the bore 10 of the wall 2 of the main housing. The wheels 42, 43 and 44 are put in place through the opening existing at the bottom of the compartment under the transmission gears before fitting the cover 12 of the housing in its place. The splined shaft 40 is then inserted by engaging it in the corresponding grooves of the three wheels 42, 43 and 44 and the left end, forming a journal, of the splined shaft 40 is pushed into the bore of the bearing 41 in which it is fitted slightly by force.
The double row ball bearing 45 is then pushed into the bore II made in the rear wall of the gearshift housing and on the right end, forming a journal, of the shaft.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
40 to which the bearing bore fits exactly. The cover 46 of the housing is then fixed in its place on the rear face of the gearshift housing by means of not f igured screws.
The shaft 47 for controlling the front wheels of the vehicle, together with the sharp-angled bevel gear 48, the splashing element 49, the spring 50, the bearings 51 and 52 and the caps 53 and 54 are all assembled in the lower housing cover 12 at the workbench; they form a separate saus-assembly which is bolted to the inclined underside 55 of the main gearshift housing 1. The transverse keys 63 ensure the correct positioning of the cover 12 and withstand the forces exerted towards it. front and rear between cover 12 and main housing 1.
It can be seen that the entire gear change, transmission and front wheel control mechanism forms a single assembly which attaches by means of bolts to the rear face of the motor housing and which can be established to suit to any form of existing engine crankcase. The assembly of the whole assembly on the engine is carried out in accordance with current standard practice for the assembly of motive power production installations.
When the aforementioned assembly was bolted to the engine crankcase, a complete assembly was made including the engine, flywheel, clutch, gear change gears, transmission gears and control. both front and rear wheels without there being an appreciable angle between the controlled shaft of the gearbox and the drive shaft at the rear wheels, nor between the shaft
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
47 and the transmission shaft to the front wheels, It should be noted that the normal transmission to.
four speed housed in compartment 3 of the gearshift housing, combined with the two speed transmission device contained in compartment 4, can be substituted for any normal motor vehicle transmission using the same size and the same type of engine casing, since it suffices to remove the old transmission and replace it with the one which is the subject of the invention. The power plant of a two-wheel drive vehicle is thus transformed into a complete drive plant for a four-wheel drive vehicle with straight line transmission both to the front wheels and to the rear wheels.
Any good driven front axle system can then be assembled to the suspension and steering mechanism at the front of the vehicle, and by connecting the drive shafts, a complete four-wheel drive vehicle is obtained with the minimum work and in the shortest time, the splitting element 49 and the spring 50 disposed on the shaft 47 are used to support the differences in torque between the front and rear axles. The acute-angle bevel wheel 48 meshes with the wheel 43 of the same shape contained in the transmission housing and, when the wheel 19 is in the illustrated position, the rear axle is controlled by the wheel 19, the wheel 42 , the shaft = ne- le 40, the moult 44 and the wheel 32 of the transmission shaft.
At the same time, the rotation of the splined shaft forces the angle wheel 43 to rotate the angle wheel 48 associated with it. By means of the splash 49, the angle wheel 48 rotates the transmission shaft 56 at the front axle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
It is obvious from the above description that the device can be easily assembled in the shortest time and with the minimum of work, that it ensures correct axial alignment of the shafts thanks to the fact that the bores for the The main shaft and for the countershaft are all obtained at the same time on their respective axes and that it realizes a device for controlling both the front and rear axles directly from the transmission thanks to a compact element transmission comprising a one-piece housing.
