Elle a principalement pour objet ; un générateur à vaporisation instantanée capable de fournir au moteur de la vapeur pratiquement exempte d'eau entraînée, quelque brusquement que la charge puisse être appliquée à la chau- dière, la séparation entre la vapeur et l'eau étant ef- fectuée complètement ; obturateur de commande pour la vapeur surchauffée, établi de telle manière qu'il ne soit pas exposé aux températures élevées destructives de la vapeur' surchauffée; un corps à eau dans lequel l'eau est en tout temps à un état d'agitation violente ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"STEAM GENERATOR" The present invention relates to boilers of the instant vaporization type and particularly relates to boilers of this type which are employed in automobiles.
Its main purpose is; an instant vaporizer capable of supplying the engine with steam substantially free of entrained water, however abruptly the load may be applied to the boiler, the separation between steam and water being effected completely; control shutter for superheated steam, so established that it is not exposed to the destructive high temperatures of superheated steam; a water body in which the water is at all times in a state of violent agitation;
heating elements through which the circulation of water is improved
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
improved and the risk of circulation changing direction by the effect of instantaneous heating is reduced to a minimum; an improved water body of relatively low cost in comparison with that of bodies currently in use; steam coil particularly designed to be subjected to thermal expansions and contractions without reducing the quality of the seal between the coil and the water body.
These various objects and others will be made evident in the course of the following description of an embodiment of the boiler shown in the accompanying drawing which is a vertical section thereof.
According to the invention the boiler comprises serpentions which are arranged to expose their upper part to a greater quantity of heat than the lower part. In addition, the circulation of gases among the coils is such as to ensure the desired upward movement of the water within the tubes or coils.
Therefore, no difficulty is experienced when a high load is imposed on the boiler or when the fireplace is suddenly ignited,
Another characteristic of the present invention, characteristic the object of which is also to improve the circulation of the water inside the tubes, resides in the particular combination and arrangement of the water body. , the steam body and the water return pipe, together with the way in which the steam and water are discharged in the steam body.
According to the invention, the water return pipes or downpipes are protected against direct exposure to flame or combustion gases * This ensures the continuous downward movement of the water which is separated in the steam body and returns to the water body through the pipes
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
return6 Return pipes are fitted with check valves to help ensure the desired direction of water flow in the boiler *
Hitherto, considerable difficulty has been experienced in constructing a control valve capable of successfully withstanding the high temperatures of superheated steam passing therethrough.
This is mainly due to the fact that the control shutter is frequently opened and closed while the vehicle is in motion in order to positively or negatively accelerate the engine according to the driver's wishes. * According to the invention, it a superheater is provided with two stages between which the control shutter is interposed. The first stage serves to dry the steam perfectly and impart an initial superheat to that steam, while the second stage raises the superheat to the desired degree *
The boiler comprises a casing 10 preferably constructed to have a suitable heat insulating liner 11.
This envelope surrounds a steam body 12 housed in its upper part, a water body 13 housed in its lower part and a set of coils and tubes 14 disposed between these two bodies.
The water body is composed of two adjacent annular steel pipes 16 and 17 which pipes can be welded to each other and are interconnected by small tubes 18 in order to ensure their mutual communication. The feed water is delivered to the water body by a feed water preheater coil 19 which is disposed near the casing 10 and which delivers the preheated water into the lower steel tube 16 A burner 21 , of any desired construction, is housed inside and slightly below the annular water body.
The burner flame and the combustion products rise @

and lick a series of steam generator coils
22 which connect the water body to the steam body. It will be noted that each coil is composed of helical turns whose diameters progressively increase as they approach the upper body 12 It will also be noted that the coil is at all points inclined upwards.
In addition, the space provided for the passage of gas is greater among the outer turns than among the inner turns, this having as a result that a greater heat exposure is obtained towards the outer part than towards the outer part. the internal part of each coil, which ensures a faster circulation of water inside the coils * The steam body 12 comprises a series of flue pipes or ducts 23 through which the combustion gases pass at a domed part
24 from the fireplace, and finally to an exhaust duct or chimney 26.
In order to obtain greater flexibility and elasticity in the coil and also to provide a better and safer seal between the coil and the steam body, the upper ends of the individual coils are led from bottom to top to. through the carnals of the steam body and enter this body through the upper part
The end of each coil which is in the steam body is slightly curved in order to deliver water and steam tangentially and impart a swirling motion to them. This construction ensures complete separation of steam and water. water, since water tends to accumulate near the peripheral part of the steam body,
while the steam is withdrawn from the body through a central tube 27 with a perforated top end * As the water exits the coils 22, it collects near the outer part of the body and enters a series of pipes of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
descending return 28 which connect the steam body to the water body and which are interposed between the preheater coil and the wall of the boiler. A check valve 29 is mounted on the end of each return pipe inside the water body, in order to prevent a reversal of the water current * Such a reversal would otherwise be very subject. to occur if the return pipe becomes overheated.
The preheater coil 19 interposed between the rising combustion gases and the descending return pipes has the role of protecting these pipes against such a risk of overheating.
The steam which is withdrawn from the steam body by a perforated pipe is made to circulate through a superheater * This superheater comprises two superheating stages, the initial stage being carried out in a coil 30 arranged immediately above the generator coils. of steam 22, its role being to dry the steam as well as to impart to it a low degree of superheating, while the final stage of superheating is carried out in a second coil 31 disposed inside of the annular water body. Between the two superheater coils is inserted a control shutter 32. used to regulate the quantity of steam passing from the boiler to the prime mover *
It goes without saying that the invention is not limited to any control shutter of particular construction.
It is further understood that the check valves 29 can: be of any suitable construction (butterfly, valve, etc.).
A boiler built according to the principles described above is relatively free from the drawbacks presented by instant vaporization boilers.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
used to this day. For example, when the steam consumption suddenly increases and it becomes necessary to speed up the operation of the burner, there are relatively no difficulties associated with the entrainment of water in the steam supply. Therefore, the boiler is very economical in water consumption, a feature which is particularly desirable.
In addition * reversal of the normal direction of water circulation in the steam generator coils is practically avoided * Another advantage is that a control plug inserted in the manner proposed is not exposed to the 'destructive action of extremely superheated steam *
It is therefore not necessary to carry out frequent replacements of the control shutter * Only one embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, but it is obvious to those skilled in the art that the invention is capable of receiving numerous other embodiments and modifications without departing from its spirit.
