"PROCEDE D'HUMECTAGE ET DE COLORATION DE PAPIERS FORTEMENT
GLACES!!
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Ltinventeur à réussi à réaliser un procédé plus simple en même temps que meilleur et d'un fonctionnement assuré, pour l'humectage du papier parcheminé et d'autres papiers fortement glacés, en vue du satinage ultérieur à. chaud, et à obtenir en outre, le cas échéant, la coloration de ces papiers en même temps que l'humectage, avant le glaçage; ce procédé consistant à mouiller les papiers à l'aide de différents dispositifs humec- teurs ou colorants avec des quantités d'eau ou de solutions de matières colorantes plus grandes que celles qui sont nécessaires pour l'humectage ou la coloration, puis à les presser dans une presse robuste à cylindres du type des presses humides usitées sur les machines à papier, pour les ramener au degré d'humidité nécessaire pour le satinage à chaud;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"METHOD OF HUMESTING AND COLORING HIGHLY PAPERS
ICE CREAM !!
Parchment papers and other highly glossy papers should be before satin-finishing, which is carried out under high pressure and at high temperature, moistened to about 25 µm of the weight of the paper. For the application of the liquid used for this wetting, we have hitherto used brush dampers or spray dampers. But as these two types of humidifiers only bring the water drop by drop onto the parchment paper which is, as we know, made with a particularly tight fart, we cannot moisten and glaze the paper in a uniform way. that by letting the wet paper rolls stand long enough before satin-finishing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The inventor has succeeded in achieving a process that is simpler at the same time as it is better and of assured operation, for the moistening of parchment paper and other highly glossy papers, with a view to subsequent satin-finishing. hot, and also to obtain, where appropriate, the coloring of these papers at the same time as the moistening, before the glazing; this process consisting in wetting the papers by means of various moistening or coloring devices with quantities of water or of solutions of coloring matters greater than those necessary for the moistening or coloring, then in pressing them in a robust press with cylinders of the type of wet presses used on paper machines, to bring them back to the degree of humidity necessary for hot satin finishing;
a completely uniform distribution of the liquid remaining in the paper is thus obtained.
Any suitable wetting device which can be used to apply water or dyestuff solutions directly or indirectly, such as, for example, immersion baths, felts or felt rolls soaked in the wetting, can be used. liquid envisaged, brush wipers, nozzle sprinklers, etc. ... In addition, the liquid can be brought onto the paper, etc., by dropping it therein or by making it run over paper directly or by means of coloring inks or by means of devices such as those which are used, for example, in printing machines with cylinders.
The invention has the advantage that one thus directly obtains an absolutely uniform dampening, and that one can avoid leaving the moistened paper to stand for a long time before the satin-finishing. As was usually done hitherto, by the paper moistened according to to the invention, can, if necessary, pass immediately after wetting to the grille ...
To make colored papers, we use according to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
. to the invention coloring solutions, which, where appropriate, can be thickened or heated. This coloring method can also be applied to papers previously colored in any way, with a view to obtaining overcoloured papers or color combinations.
Inapplication of the coloring liquid on non-colored or previously colored papers can be done uniformly or not, on one side or on both, if necessary using different colors.
The paper can, for example, be pre-colored first by means of any dampening methods, for example in an immersion bath, then treated with coloring solutions, for example by spraying, and then freed from the excess liquid. by means of a cylinder press. By treating in the wet state, with other coloring solutions, papers thus previously colored,. one can obtain particular effects.
By mechanical treatment of the solutions of dyestuffs applied to the paper, for example by spreading them using brushes, they can be distributed uniformly or not on the surface of the paper, before expelling the excess liquid by pressure.
The coloring of a finished paper is done in accordance with
EMI3.1
according to the invention, as well as the moistening, in a perfectly uniform manner, the colored paper also being able to be subjected, immediately afterwards, to a subsequent treatment. The colored or over-colored papers, in accordance with the invention, have a significantly more beautiful appearance, owing to the fact that their surface is better covered and better leveled than that of colored papers in the mass.
By choosing the appropriate dyestuffs, rub-resistant and non-sagging colors can be obtained. By over-coloring, in accordance with the invention, of pre-colored papers, shades of a depth and intensity are obtained which cannot be obtained by bulk coloring, except at the cost of great difficulty. . In time adorns me
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
cost of coloring paper according to the invention is significantly lower than that of bulk coloring.
Compared to the coloring by means of the coloring machines used for other papers, machines in which the colored papers are dried after pressing, the process according to the invention is distinguished by the fact that this subsequent drying is removed, as well as the new moistening necessary afterwards for the satin finish, because the. Parchment papers colored according to the invention are glazed and dried at the same time on the heated calender. Another advantage is that, according to the invention, it is possible to work at a much higher speed (up to 100 m. Per minute and above) than when using the washing machines. color known, the speed of which, as we know, does not exceed; 40m per minute.
We must also add the advantage that it is possible to color even very small quantities of paper with a succession of quite any colors, which is impossible when working on the paper machine.
For carrying out the process, it is advantageous, depending on the case, to mount the wetting device and possibly
EMI4.1
dye, that is to say the whole of the apparatus to "moisten and possibly color and to press, immediately in front of the calender., and thus to bring together in a single operation the humming and possibly the coloring and the In addition, a new possibility is obtained, that of mounting the whole apparatus for moistening, coloring and pressing in the paper machine or of reattaching it to this machine.
It has been found to be advantageous in many cases to heat, during or after pressing, the web of paper processed on the roller press. In this way, certain color effects can be obtained in specific cases.
