<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
49 et fixé à celle-ci d'une façon démon table;

the ijo fcetar is because: posa of a driving unit 1 and a dTintr: â.uction and compression unit of the explosive charge ¯2, the Die tri ce unit comprises a cylinder 3 fitted with heads 4 and 5, and the unit at T5nt;
roâTic3tion and compression of the load comprises a cylinder 6 alun1 with heads 7 and ±. the driving unit 1 comprises a piston 9, arranged to receive a reciprocating movement in the cylinder 3, and the cylinder is surrounded either completely or partially by a water jacket 10, a pipe 11 being provided between the cylinder wall and the outlet of the water jacket at the point where it is

exhaust from the cylinder, the exhaust being effected through openings 12 made in the wall of the cylinder following the circumference of the cylinder within the limits of the pipe 11.
By virtue of this arrangement of the exhaust ports, portions of the cylinder wall 5 remain intact between relatively adjacent ports, so that the piston rings 9 can never get caught in these ports.

to a 1T crank of the z8 motor shaft of the machine, rotating in J19 bearings fixed on a 20 foundation.
The piston 21 of the load introduction and compression unit works in the cylinder 6.This piston is connected to a rod ¯ ± ±, connected in turn to a slide 23 mounted on a suitable slide fixed on the foundation 30, a connecting rod 24 being connected to said slide 23 and to the collar 25 of an eccentric 26 salted on the bent shaft 18. A flywheel 27 is wedged on this shaft, which also loses a pulley 28.
The inlet pipe with multiplet 2 ± branches has a pipe 30 connected to a suitable carburetor (not shown) and the branches of said pipe communicate with the ports.

<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Grazing 37 and 88, partly practical in the minds
4 and 7, partly in the heads 5 and 8 of the two units, establish communication between the ends. respective of the two cylinders of the units and serve to bring the explosive charge of the unit 2 into the driving unit 1. The heads 4 and 5 are provided with inlet ports 39 and 40 respectively, having seats 41 and 42 and valves 43 and 44 to control the introduction of the explosive charge through the ports 39 and 40 into the corresponding chambers at the ends of cylinder 3.
The spark plugs 45 and 46 are fitted in holes 7 and 48 of the heads 4 and 5, and customary leads run from these spark plugs to a suitable ignition unit.
By examining figs. 4 and 5, it will be noted that the eccentric 26 is offset with respect to the crank 17, so that the pistons 9 and 21, while working in correspondence with each other of the manner described below, are not in unison in their reciprocating movements, in other words, they do not receive the same movement. In the position of the pistons shown in fig. 1, the driving piston 9 has reached the end of travel in the direction of the bent shaft, and the crank 17 is in neutral, as also shown in fig. 4. At this time, the eccentric 26 is in the position shown in fig. 4,
and the piston 21 has traveled approximately two-thirds of its stroke in the direction of the head 18 of the unit 2. The length of the piston head 9 as well as the stroke thereof is such that at limits from its stroke the opposite ends of the piston uncover the exhaust ports 12, and as shown in fig. 1, the piston 9, when it is at the limit of its movement shown in said figure, discovers the said lights. At this moment the explosive mixture which was brought previously in the end of the cylinder 3 facing towards the bent shaft, was compressed to the maximum, approximately the totality of the burnt gases was expelled from the 'opposite end of the cylinder,
and the explosive mixture will be brought into this end of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
cylinder, the valve 4 being in its open position due to the sudden depression of the fresh charge, Likewise at about the same time, The piston 21 moves in the direction of the head 8 of the cylinder 6 in one movement gradually delayed as eccentric 26 rotates to its neutral position, and during this movement of piston 21 and its immediately preceding period of movement the explosive charge which has been introduced into cylinder ¯6 at its end 8 , is expelled, substantially without compression,
through passage 38 and aperture 40 in the corresponding end 3 of unit 1. At this point the load previously compressed in the opposite end of the cylinder! is lit and the piston 9 is driven in the direction of the head 5 of the cylinder ¯3, the exhaust ports 12 will be instantly closed by the piston 9, and said piston will compress the load which has been brought into the end, last mentioned, cylinder j3 before the start of the next cycle, la. valve 44 closing automatically at this time under the compressive force exerted by the piston 9 against the load introduced.
It will be noted that the exhaust ports 12 are unmasked little by little when the crank 47 goes beyond neutral, and it is obvious that when the piston 9 unmasks the ports 12, the burnt gases will suddenly escape as a result of their relaxation, and the stroke 'of the piston 9 at this period is regulated by the lever 17 and the free section of the exhaust ports 12 is extended so that during the time when the ports are unmasked, there is a precisely the volume of gaseous products represented by the volume of exhaust gas,
which can escape from cylinder 3. During this time the explosive charge which enters serves to displace the exhaust gases or the portion of the volume thereof which is not expelled by the expansion of the burnt gases, and therefore - when the exhaust ports 12 are closed, or masked by the piston 1 at the beginning of its return movement or its compression stroke, the end of the cylinder in which
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the charge has been brought in, will be completely free of combustion products from the explosion of the previous charge.
At about this point the crank 17 has passed its neutral point and occupies approximately the position shown in fig. 5 of the drawing, the eccentric being at this moment at its neutral point in the direction of the motor, as also shown. the said figure. The crank and the eccentric occupying the said position, the piston 9 will occupy approximately the position shown in fig. 2, in which the exhaust ports are completely hidden, and during the subsequent rotation of the bent shaft the load which has been brought into the end 5 of the cylinder will be compressed, the valve 44 having closed automatically, - at the beginning of the backward stroke of the said piston .2. Likewise at this moment the piston 21 will occupy the position shown in fig. 2,
or in other words, at the limit of its stroke in the direction of head 8 of cylinder 6 and moving to this position, a fresh charge of explosive mixture was sucked into the opposite end of cylinder 6 and is ready to be brought into the corresponding end of cylinder 3, at about the time when the end of piston head 9, which is on the drive shaft side, unmasks the exhaust ports. adorns
It is obvious that during the suction stroke the piston 21 will receive an accelerated movement,
The valves 33, 54, 43 and 44 are all of the same construction, and in order to prevent any entry of air around the valve stems and any leakage of explosive mixture, as well as to ensure the lubrication of the stems. valve, a cylindrical box 49 has been fixed to the outer face of the cylinder head through which each valve stem breaks, the outer end formed of this box being provided with an opening 50, in which the valve slides with gentle friction. said valve stem. In the box 49 is housed freely felt 51, supplied with lubricant in an appropriate manner,
the. valve stem being in this way constantly provided
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
a thin layer of lubricant so that it is easy to walk. A compression bearing 52 surrounds each valve stem and rests between a stopper at the outer end of the stem and the closed outer end of the valve stem. box 49, this spring is used to keep the valve in its seat,
except when it is opened automatically by the operation of pistons effecting changes in the pressure of the gaseous fluid in the cylinders of units 1 and 2. A cylindrical cap 53 is placed on the box
49 and attached to it in a demon table fashion;
this bonnet is closed at its outer end so that there can be no accumulation of dust or sand on the valve stems and the ports 52. Retort Mentioned above, the exhaust port has several openings made in the cylinder wall ± and arranged retort described above. It has been observed that while the engine is running, due to the sudden expansion of the exhaust gases at the bite where the openings are unmasked, the entry of air by these openings is prevented so that there is no danger of flames in the ignition chamber, the lights individually being of a practical minimum size, so that, the combustion products burning externally beyond the lights,
there could be no flashback to ignite the incoming charge.
