Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 EMI1.1
 2 NaR so4 * Mg go3 = 1% 8.04 * Na2S04 # Il20 # a02 a NAIL S04 f- Ca GOS - Sa 804 .. Ha2SQ4 tir :a.20 .. cr02..

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 EMI2.1
 Ka S04 * 2 Na2504: .. Ia2ao3 a ig ao3 .. S :ra2S04..

  Process for extracting magnesia from its oxidized ores or carbonates, particularly dolomite.

   The present invention relates to a process for extracting magnesia from its oxidized or carbonated ores, particularly dolomite (natural calcium and magnesium carbonate which may contain up to 45% of magnesium carbonate).

   According to this process, the raw dolomite is attacked by a solution of sodium bisulphate, a residue of certain manufactures.

   This gives a solution of neutral sodium and magnesium sulphates and a deposit of calcium sulphate, practically insoluble. At the same time, carbon dioxide is released which can be recovered.

   The proportions to be used for each material correspond very approximately to the following equations:
 EMI1.1
 2 NaR so4 * Mg go3 = 1% 8.04 * Na2S04 # Il20 # a02 a NAIL S04 f- Ca GOS - Sa 804 .. Ha2SQ4 shot: a.20 .. cr02 ..

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   It is easy to precipitate the impurities from the solution of the magnesium and sodium sulphates, which solution is then separated from these impurities and from the calcium sulphate by filtration followed by washing.

   Calcium sulphate can find outlets as a soil amendment, or as plaster, after cooking; it can also be sold as precipitated lime sulfate, after purification.

   From the solution of sodium and magnesium sulphates, magnesium carbonate is precipitated by adding sodium carbonate, according to the equation:
 EMI2.1
 Ka S04 * 2 Na2504: .. Ia2ao3 a ig ao3 .. S: ra2S04 ..

   The reaction is quantitative. The formation of light magnesium carbonate is avoided by operating at high temperature, but below 100 C. The precipitate of magnesium carbonate is easy to filter and wash; it is oven-dried to be finally transformed into magnesia by calcination.
