MARTEAU PNEUMATIQUE.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig.l est une coupe longitudinale.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PNEUMATIC HAMMER.
The present invention relates to a pneumatic hammer in which a foil is subjected to the ohocs of a striking piston moving in a cylinder.
Pneumatic hammers of this kind are generally provided with a distributor comprising a piston which reciprocates and moves parallel to the axis of the striking piston. They have the drawback that the impacts of the distribution piston against the front and rear walls of the chamber in which it moves cause unpleasant longitudinal vibrations and tire the operator.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the present invention this drawback is overcome by arranging the distributor so that the movements of the distributing piston take place in a direction such that the resulting things do not cause any unpleasant effect on the operator.
It is thus that it may be particularly advantageous to arrange the distributor so that the movements of its piston take place perpendicular to those of the striking piston.
The present invention also relates to a special combination of the distribution mechanism, in the case of using a distribution piston whose two faces are constantly subjected to the action of compressed air and whose displacement in one direction is caused by a pressure difference caused because on the one hand the compressed air acting on one of the faces is placed in communication with the free air, and on the other hand the other face is subjected to a pressure exerted by the air discharged by their return from the striking piston, while the movement in the other direction is caused by a vacuum exerted on the face of the distribution piston which has just been subjected to the action of the air discharged by the piston hitter.
The drawings attached to this specification show by way of example one embodiment of the invention.
In these drawings:
Fig.l is a longitudinal section.
Fig.2 is an exterior view of the apparatus.
The distribution piston 1 capable of moving in a cylindrical chamber 2 is arranged so that its axis is perpendicular to the axis of the striking piston 3 such that the shocks due to the contact of this piston with the side walls of the chamber 2 be directed
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in the transverse direction so that they do not cause fatigue to the operator.
The compressed air supplied by the pipe 6 housed in the usual way in the handle acts constantly on the two faces 4 and 5 of the piston 1, for this purpose the pipe 6 communicates constantly with the chamber 2 through two openings
7 and 8 located on each side of said chamber, This chamber is furthermore provided in its two lateral opening walls 9 and 10 through which the compressed air is directed towards the faces of the striking pistons 3. The piston 1 is in furthermore provided with two cylindrical faces 11 and 12 capable of closing off the two openings 7 and 8.
The operation of the distribution takes place as follows:
Let us consider the distributor piston 1 when its face 12 closes the opening 8 of the duct 13.The compressed air arriving through the duct 7 then enters through the opening 9 into the duct 14 and exerts pressure on the front face of the duct. hitting hammer 3. The front part of the chamber being, by means of conduits 15 and 16 in communication with the free air, there results a pressure difference on said hitting hammer 3 which has the effect of moving it. oi backwards following arrow Y.
When the ridge 17 of the striking piston 3 has passed the openings 15 and 16, the air in the part 18 of the cylinder is forced back and comes through the duct 13 and the opening 10 exerts on the face. 8 a directed action along the arrow X.
At this moment the opening 8 being released from the face 12 the compressed air brought into the chamber 2 by the duct 6
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
arrives in part 18 of the cylinder through the opening 10 and the duct 13, and * slow to act on the rear face of the striking piston 3 which determines a pressure difference on the piston, the front face being in communication with the air free through conduits 15 and 16
This pressure difference to which the striking piston 3 is subjected has the effect of driving it forward.
When the faoe 19 of the striking piston 3 has passed the two openings 15 and 16 of the part 18 of the cylinder, a depression is produced through the duct 14 and the opening 9 on the face 4 of the distribution piston 1.
This results in a displacement of said distribution piston 1 in the direction opposite to the flock X so that this piston returns to the position considered first and the operation continues as before.
A V-lock 21 sliding down and held by the stake 22, penetrating into the groove 23 made in the handle of the said device allows the release of the nut life intended for the adjustment and setting of the distribution box *
As soon as one stops pressing the foil 25 against the rock, the operation of the apparatus stops automatically as follows * "The compressed air arriving at the front face of the striking piston 3 sends the foil 25 to the bottom of the socket 26 such that the rim 27 of this foil abuts against a rim 28 of said socket.
This movement of the foil establishes the communication of the part 18 of the cylinder with the free air through the openings 15 and 16, which has the consequence of preventing the striking piston 3 from continuing its movements.
