<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"Coupling with automatic disconnection"
The invention relates to an automatically disconnected coupling for transmitting, between a motor element and a receiver element, a maximum permitted torque, comprising at least one friction means provided on one of the aforementioned elements, and a coaxial sleeve. these friction means, arranged to cooperate with the latter for coupling and attached to the other aforesaid element.
Such couplings are already known for protecting coupled elements. These couplings have the disadvantage that in the uncoupling position, when the predetermined torque is reached and during all the time when the motor element is kept rotated about its axis, the cooperating surfaces for the coupling remain in contact with friction, at the risk, on the one hand, to be damaged and / or destroyed and, on the other hand, to damage the elements to be uncoupled.
The object of the invention is to remedy this drawback and to provide a coupling that is either rigid or flexible, in which the friction surfaces are, from the moment of uncoupling, located apart from each other and kept apart. from each other so that when the motor element continues its rotation, any damage to said friction surfaces and the elements to be uncoupled is discarded; which allows a possible rearming of the coupling.
For this purpose, according to the invention, the abovementioned friction means and the sleeve are arranged so as to be able to move axially with respect to one another and have their contact surfaces intended to cooperate during the coupling. , which are frustoconical and coaxial with the sleeve.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to one embodiment of the invention, means are provided for guiding the sleeve and maintaining it coaxial with said friction means when it moves axially in order to be released relative to the latter for uncoupling.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the coupling comprises means arranged to axially move the friction means relative to the sleeve, on the one hand, during assembly of the coupling and to adjust the maximum authorized torque value. after automatic disconnection of the latter and, secondly, to reset the coupling.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the object of the invention, the aforementioned friction means are formed on the motor element, the guiding means of the aforementioned sleeve being constituted by at least one bearing which is coaxial with the motor element. and which is arranged near one of the truncated cone bases constituting the aforesaid friction means. The aforementioned sleeve then constitutes the bearing and has at least one recess cooperating with the motor element and arranged to allow axial displacement of the sleeve relative to said friction means during coupling and uncoupling.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention and to provide a flexible coupling with teeth, said coupling comprises at least one hub fixed on one of the two aforesaid elements and having an external toothing, and a sleeve arranged coaxially on said hub and fixed to the other aforementioned element and having a ring mounted, with a tight fitting drive, coaxially in said sleeve, the ring having an internal toothing, arranged to cooperate with the above external toothing of the hub to ensure the transmission of torque, the sleeve and the ring being machined so that their contact surfaces for the aforementioned tightening fit are frustoconical,
the sleeve having at least one bearing coaxial with the frustoconical surfaces and arranged to cooperate with the

less a cylindrical surface presented by the ring, and located substantially in the extension of the frustoconical surface thereof, in order to maintain the frustoconical surfaces of the sleeve and the ring coaxial and free relative to each other when uncoupling intervenes.
Other details and particularities of the invention will emerge from the secondary claims and the description of the drawings which are appended to the present document and which illustrate, by way of non-limiting examples, various particular embodiments of the coupling according to the invention. invention.
FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic view, in section and with broken parts, of a coupling according to the invention, the aforementioned sleeve of the coupling being shown in half-views in the two extreme positions that it occupies for mating and uncoupling.
Figures 2 and 3 are similar to Figure 1 and show a variant of the coupling illustrated in the latter.
Figure 4 is a partial schematic view, in elevation and in section, of a flexible coupling gear according to the invention, the latter being shown in the coupled position.
Figure 5 is a view similar to that of Figure 4 and shows a variant of the coupling illustrated in the latter.
Figure 6 is a schematic elevational view in section of a diaphragm coupling according to the invention.

Means 7, constituted by a bearing 7 ', as shown in FIG. 1, are provided for guiding the sleeve 4 and keeping it coaxial with the friction means 3, in free rotation, when said sleeve 4 slides axially and is free from to these for uncoupling. The conicity of the friction means 3 has the advantage of allowing the assembly to pressurize the friction means by simply driving them into the sleeve 4. The slope of the cone, the contact area of these surfaces frustoconical 5.6, the nature of these surfaces and the tightening of a truncated cone in the other are such that, once engaged, these friction means 3 remain engaged in the sleeve 4. When the predetermined torque is reached, the friction means 3 slip in the sleeve 4.
Thanks to the aforementioned conicity, this slip disengages and releases automatically the friction means 3 of the sleeve 4.
According to the invention, means 7 ", either removable or rendered inoperative, are provided and arranged to axially move the friction means 3 relative to the sleeve 4 or vice versa, firstly to reset the coupling and, d. on the other hand, to adjust the maximum allowable value of the torque, especially when resetting after uncoupling, Thus, as shown in FIG. 1, a thread F is provided on the motor element 1 to receive a workpiece (no shown) which, during screwing, will put more or less pressure on the frustoconical surfaces for the aforesaid reset and the adjustment of the value of the torque.
The net F could be replaced by removable pulling screws (not shown) associated with the plate 1 'of the driving element 1 which has through-holes 1 "for these screws, the latter being intended to cooperate with the threaded holes 1" provided in the sleeve 4 in correspondence with the aforesaid holes 1 "of the plate 1 '.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the threads F and the traction screw could coexist on the same coupling in order to be used separately according to the access facilities.
The movements of the sleeve 4 on the motor element 1 and on the guide rods 2 'of the receiving element 2 of the coupling will be visualized with reference to the references X1, X2 and Y taken from FIG.
Advantageously, according to the invention and as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the aforementioned friction means 3 are shaped on the driving element 1. On the coupling illustrated in FIG. 2, the guiding means 7 of the sleeve 4 consist of by two bearings 8 and 8 'which are coaxial with the motor element 1 and which are fixed thereto respectively close to the large base of the truncated cone and the small base of said truncated cone constituting the friction means 3 aforesaid . The aforesaid sleeve 4, which cooperates with said bearings 8,8 ', has a respective recess 9,9' for each of the bearings 8,8 ', these recesses 9,9' being arranged, to allow the axial displacement of the sleeve 4 by relative to said friction means 3 during coupling and uncoupling.
In the coupling shown in FIG. 2, a spring 9 "is advantageously provided between the bottom of the recess 9 adjacent to the large base of the truncated cone and the outer ring of the corresponding bearing 8, so that, on the one hand, to assist in uncoupling and, on the other hand, to keep the sleeve 4 in the uncoupled position.The movements of the sleeve 4 for adjusting and resetting the coupling are effected, as described above, by means of screws shown, associated with the plate 1 'belonging to the motor element 1.
According to the invention and as illustrated in Figure 3, the aforementioned friction means 3 are formed on a hub 10 coaxial with the aforesaid motor element 1 and wedged thereto. The guiding means 7 of the above-mentioned sleeve 4 consist of two bearings 11 and 11 'which
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
are coaxial with the motor element 1 and which are mounted on the hub 10, on either side and near the bases of the truncated cone constituting the aforementioned friction means 3. The aforesaid sleeve 4, which cooperates with said bearings 11 and 11 ', has a recess 12, 12' for each of the bearings. These are mounted in the aforementioned recesses so that the bearing 11collisse on the hub 10 and so that the bearing 11 'slides in the sleeve 4.
Advantageously, a spring 14 is provided between a peripheral shoulder 13, provided on the hub 10, and the inner ring 15 of the bearing 11 in order, on the one hand, to assist in uncoupling and, on the other hand, to maintain the sleeve 4 in uncoupled position.
The coupling according to the invention, as shown in Figure 4, is a flexible coupling with teeth. It comprises a hub 16 fixed on the aforementioned motor element 1 and has an external toothing 17 and a sleeve 18 arranged coaxially on said hub 16 and fixed to the aforementioned receiver element 2. This sleeve 18 includes a ring 19 mounted, with a tightening drive, coaxially in said sleeve 18. This ring 19 has an internal toothing 20, arranged to cooperate with the outer teeth 17 aforesaid hub 16 to ensure the flexibility of the coupling and torque transmission.

A spring 30 is provided to act
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
on the outer ring 31 of the bearing 27, which is associated with the receiving element 2. This spring 30 is arranged to assist in uncoupling and maintaining the coupling in the uncoupled position. The aforesaid means 7 "provided for rearming the coupling and adjusting the value of the authorized torque (shown in broken lines in FIGS. 4 and 5), consist, in the embodiments of the coupling illustrated in FIGS. for example screws 32, of axis parallel to that of the motor element 1, associated with the sleeve 18 in order to bear on the ring 19 above.
The coupling illustrated in Figure 5 is also a flexible coupling with teeth. It comprises two hubs 16, 16 'with external teeth 17, 17' fixed on the driving element 1 and the other on the receiving element 2 above. A sleeve 18, common to these hubs 16, 16 ', is arranged coaxially with the latter and comprises two internal teeth 20, 20' which cooperate respectively with the external teeth 17, 17 'of the hubs 16, 16' carried, on the other hand, by the driving element 1 and, on the other hand, by the receiving element 2. The internal toothing 20 of the sleeve 18 which cooperates with the external toothing 17 of the hub 16 fixed to the driving element 1 and is carried by a ring 19 mounted, with tightening fit, coaxially in said sleeve 18 to ensure the transmission of torque.
The sleeve 18 and the ring 19 are arranged to move axially relative to each other and are machined so that their contact surfaces 21 and 22, for the aforementioned clamping fit are frustoconical. The sleeve 18 has the above-mentioned guide means 7 consisting of two bearings 25, 25 'coaxial with the frustoconical surfaces 21 and 22 and arranged to be able to move axially in the recesses 12 and 12'.
These bearings 25 and 25 'are arranged to cooperate each with a cylindrical surface 26,26' of the ring 19 located in the extension of the frustoconical surface thereof, in order to maintain the frustoconical surfaces of the sleeve 19 and the coaxial ring 19 and free when uncoupling occurs.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Still as shown in Figure 5, a bearing 27,27 'is advantageously incorporated in each bearing 25,25' aforesaid to cooperate with the corresponding cylindrical surface 26,26 'above the ring 19. The inner rings 29,29' these bearings 27,27 'are fixed on said ring 19 while their outer rings 28, 28' slide on the bearings 25,25 'in the recesses 12 and 12'.
A spring 30, as described above in FIG. 4, is advantageously provided between the outer race 28 of the bearing 27 and the receiving element 2, and this, in particular, to assist in uncoupling and to keep the coupling in the uncoupled position.
It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the described embodiments and that many modifications can be made thereto without departing from the scope of the claims.
Thus one could, according to the invention, provide, as shown in Figure 6 and in the case of a diaphragm coupling 33, a coupling whose motor element 1 carries the friction means 3 above and the receiving element 2 of which has the above-mentioned sleeve 4, these elements 3 and 4 being arranged to move axially relative to one another and the coupling connection being effected via the frustoconical surfaces 5 and 6. The sleeve 4 forming part of the receiving element 2 is guided on the motor element 1 by means of bearings 27, 27 ', the outer race 28 of the bearing 27 being fixed to the bearing 23 of the sleeve 4 while the inner race 34 of said bearing 27 slides on the cylindrical surface 24 presented by the motor element 1.
The inner ring 34 'of the bearing 27' is fixed on the cylindrical surface 24 'forming part of the driving element 1 while the outer ring 28' slides, in the recess 12 ', on the bearing 23' of the sleeve 4.
A spring 30 is advantageously provided for acting on the inner ring 34 of the bearing 27 fixed to the sleeve 4, to assist in uncoupling. and maintaining the coupling in position

uncoupled. The aforesaid means 7 ", whose screws 32 are removable to be disengaged before putting the coupling into service, are arranged to reset the coupling and to adjust the value of the desired torque.They comprise a shoulder 35, formed on the sleeve 4 and which has holes 36 in which the rods of the screws 32 pass freely, and a plate 37 provided with threaded holes 38 in which said screws 32 are screwed to put the frustoconical surfaces 5,6 in contact to achieve the coupling and set the desired torque value.
The screws 32 are of course removed from the coupling for the commissioning of the latter.
