<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Transmission unit for motor vehicles.
This invention relates to a transmission unit for motor vehicles.
More specifically, it concerns a transmission unit of the type containing an input shaft and an output shaft, with a continuously variable transmission between them, consisting of two pulleys located respectively on the input shaft and on the output shaft and one between these pulleys mounted endless transmission element, said pulleys consisting of conical pulley halves and one pulley half of each pair of pulley halves being axially stationary and the other pulley half being axially movable.
Such transmissions are used as a stepless automatic and are arranged between the output shaft of the engine and the drive wheels of the vehicle. Between the engine and the transmission, there is known in a known manner a start-off clutch and a mechanism for reversing the direction of rotation, which may be partially or completely integrated in the transmission.
By moving the axially movable pulley halves, the running circle of the transmission element, which usually consists of a belt or chain, can be changed on the pulleys. A larger running circle on the primary pulley results in a smaller running circle on the secondary pulley, and vice versa.
The axial displacement of the pulley halves is controlled in a known manner with hydraulic
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
printing cylinders ordered by a hydraulic circuit, according to different parameters.
It is known that both the input shaft and the output shaft are axially freely movable at one end and are always mounted in a ball bearing at their other end. It is necessary for these shafts to be axially freely movable at one end, so that production tolerances must be accommodated, as well as changes in the length of the shafts that may arise due to temperature differences.
The ball bearings are used because they can absorb radial as well as axial forces very well and, moreover, they provide a self-centering effect, which, according to the usual techniques, is a necessity to keep the shafts perfectly in place.
The object of the invention is to provide a transmission unit which is new in terms of bearings and which has various technical advantages.
To this end, the invention relates to a transmission unit of the type mentioned in the preamble, characterized in that at least one of the aforementioned shafts is axially freely movable at one end, while at the other end it is mounted in an axially locked roller bearing.
A roller bearing means a bearing whose rollers are cylindrical or slightly cylindrical. With the characteristic that the roller bearing is "axially locked", it is meant that the rollers with a conventional radial clearance are axially
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
are enclosed relative to the inner ring and outer ring of the roller bearing.
By using a roller bearing, the advantage is obtained that space is saved, since such a roller bearing takes up less space than a ball bearing. This is an important advantage in a compact construction of a transmission unit, since any space saving, however small, is useful.
As is known, a roller bearing allows very little axial mobility. By using a roller bearing in the current application, it is obtained that each relevant shaft and the stationary pulley half can consequently also move a little axially, with the advantage that the position of this pulley can adapt slightly to the commonly occurring skew of the transmission element, thereby reducing wear of the transmission element.
Until now it was always thought that the axial stationary disc half should remain perfectly stationary or should always return to one position, so that until now it has always been opted for ball bearings that are known to be self-centering. Therefore, the aforementioned benefits could not be realized.
It should be noted that, as already apparent from the foregoing, an "axially stationary pulley half" is intended to mean a pulley half that cannot be axially actuated and displaced by means of the aforementioned printing cylinders. According to the invention, the pulley half is a little axially "mobile", which means the very small possibility of free axial displacement
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
is obtained thanks to the use of a roller bearing, instead of a ball bearing.
Furthermore, by using a roller bearing that is axially enclosed, an optimum compromise between different aspects is realized. After all, such an axially enclosed roller bearing still offers sufficient strength to absorb the axial forces in the current application, but on the other hand it now also offers the aforementioned advantages, which cannot be realized by means of a ball bearing.
At least the input shaft is preferably mounted in the aforementioned manner, which does not exclude, however, that this can also be applied to the output shaft. Since in practice most of the construction parts are usually located on the input shaft, it is especially important here to save space in order to strive for a compact construction. In the transmission units of the above-mentioned type, the input shaft is usually the least heavily axially loaded, and therefore also the most suitable shaft for bearing in accordance with the invention with a roller bearing instead of a ball bearing.
The shaft other than that fitted with the aforementioned roller bearing is preferably axially freely movable at one end and bearing at the other end by means of a ball bearing.
By equipping the input shaft with the roller bearing in accordance with the invention, while the output shaft is supported on at least one end by means of a ball bearing, it is obtained that, on the one hand, the aforementioned advantages can be realized and, on the other hand, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
it remains possible to continue the movement of the output shaft in a classic manner over helical gears, to a differential or the like. In such a case, the ball bearing is necessary to absorb the axial forces arising from the transmission by means of the helical gears.
The axially freely movable bearings are preferably realized in a classic manner by means of needle bearings and / or non-locked roller bearings.
The aforementioned roller bearing can be a purely cylindrical bearing. However, the use of a spherical roller bearing, which is somewhat self-centering, is not excluded, as this also provides the aforementioned advantages.
With the insight to better demonstrate the features of the invention, a preferred embodiment is described hereinafter as an example without any limitation, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: figure 1 schematically represents a transmission unit according to the invention; figures 2 and 3 are highly schematized to illustrate the classical inclination of the transmission element; figure 4 represents a cut from a practical embodiment of the invention.
As shown in figure 1, the invention relates to a transmission unit 1 of the type comprising an input shaft 2 and an output shaft 3, with a continuously variable transmission 4 therebetween consisting of two pulleys 5-6 which are respectively mounted on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
input shaft 2 and the output shaft 3 and an endless transmission element 7 arranged between these pulleys 5-6. The pulleys 5-6 consist of conical pulley halves 8-9 and 10-11, of which one pulley half, 8 and 10 respectively, is axially stationary and the other pulley half, 9 and 11 respectively, is axially movable.
The transmission unit 1 hereby forms a stepless automatic and is arranged between the output shaft of the engine 12 and the wheels 13 of the vehicle to be driven.
Between the motor 12 and the transmission 4, there is a known start-up coupling 14, as well as a mechanism 15 for reversing the direction of rotation, which are only shown schematically.
Furthermore, the transmission unit 1 is provided with hydraulic pressure cylinders 16-17 for axially displacing the movable pulley halves 9 and 11. These pressure cylinders 16-17 are controlled by means of a control (not shown).
By moving the pulley halves 9 and 11, the running circle of the transmission element 7, which usually consists of a belt, on the pulleys 5-6 can be changed. A larger running circle on the primary pulley 5 results in a smaller running circle on the secondary pulley 6, and vice versa.
It is known that, for purely geometric reasons, the transmission element 7 is not in practice for all transmission ratios in a plane perpendicular to the axes 2-3. As shown schematically in Figures 2 and 3, two positions normally occur
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the plane being perpendicular to the axes and always inclines in the other positions.
Figure 2 shows the position where the plane is perpendicular, while Figure 3 shows a situation in which an inclination occurs.
It is clear that the transmission element 7 is subject to greater wear in such an inclination, especially when it consists of a belt.
The invention consists in that at least one of the shafts 2 and 3 is mounted on one end axially free-motion, while on the other end it is mounted in an axially locked roller bearing.
In the illustrated example of figure 1, the input shaft 2 is mounted in this manner. At the end 18, this shaft 2 is axially freely movable in a needle bearing 19. At its other end 20, more specifically on the side of the axially stationary pulley half 8, the shaft 2 in accordance with the invention is supported in an axially locked roller bearing 21.
In the example shown, the output shaft 3 is mounted in a classic manner, in other words in an axially freely movable manner at the end 22, by means of an unclosed roller bearing 23, and by means of a ball bearing 24 at the end 25. .
The movement of the output shaft 3 is directed to a differential 28 and the wheels 13 of the vehicle by means of a transmission with gears 26-27, which have an bevel gear.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Since, according to the invention, use is made of an enclosed roller bearing 21, in other words a roller bearing whose rollers 29 are enclosed with some play in the rings 30-31, this roller bearing 21 can absorb the axial forces occurring with sufficient certainty. The roller bearing 21 offers the advantage that it takes up less space compared to the ball bearings usually used at this location.
Due to the fact that the roller bearing 21 is not self-centering and allows low axial mobility, the entire pulley 5 can move slightly axially, thereby minimizing the drawbacks arising from the tilt shown in Figure 3.
Because the output shaft 3 is mounted in a classic manner with the ball bearing 24, it is possible to continue to use gears 26-27 with an oblique toothing.
Figure 4 shows a practical embodiment of the portion shown in Figure 1. This figure shows, among other things, how all the rings of the bearings are mounted between the adjacent parts of the transmission unit 1.
The present invention is by no means limited to the exemplary embodiment shown in the figures, but such transmission unit can be realized in various shapes and sizes without departing from the scope of the invention.
