GB1 129 475 en US P 3 395 159.
DP 1 417 648. US P 5 340 548. US P 5 371 056. en WO 90/12 646.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
EMI2.1
verbindingen van Ba. Fe. Ni. Cr. Cr. Pd, Pt. AI, Cu. Rh. Ti.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
120 km/u).

IMPROVED BURNING OF FOSSIL FUELS.
The present invention relates to the use of a catalyst for improving the combustion process of solid and liquid fossil fuels in combustion plants or incinerators and in combustion engines.
Fossil fuels are used in the combustion process at combustion plants with fuel oil or coal. in central heating systems. in blast furnaces and household waste incineration. as well as diesel or gasoline engines for passenger cars and trucks. in shipping and aviation, etc. This combustion process is constantly adapted and improved.
Optimizing this combustion process has been the subject of intensive research for many years, partly stimulated by the various oil crises. through the development and fine-tuning of petroleum refining and through environmental problems. Both ways were sought to realize controlled intermediate and end products of combustion and refining processes with higher yields and to improve the quality of the exhaust gases.
V 205 alone or in combination with other metal oxides or other metal compounds is known for use as a catalyst for numerous oxidation reactions of organic compounds, such as the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes. ketones. carboxylic acids; the oxidation of aliphatic and aromatic compounds: see eg GB1 129 475 and US P 3 395 159.
In these and other applications, the catalyst is used in its powder form. in a solution or carried by a substrate, for example, a silica gel or aluminum oxide substrate or other ceramic substrate.
Vanadium-containing oxidation catalysts have also been described for the purification of the exhaust gases from engines, but also from industrial plants. m. in US P 3 282 861. DP 1 417 648. US P 5 340 548. US P 5 371 056. and WO 90/12 646. The use of these exhaust gas catalysts is usually expensive and often increases fuel consumption so that a reduced emission of incompletely burned gases is observed, but an increased emission of the total amount of combustion gases. resulting in a shift in emphasis for the environmental impact.
The present invention aims to improve the combustion of liquid and solid fossil fuels, thereby reducing the production of incompletely burned exhaust gases.
Another object of the present invention is to reduce consumption considerably by using the fuel more efficiently, thus reducing the invention
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
brings both an economic and an environmental benefit.
Other objectives of the present invention will become apparent from the following description.
These objectives are realized by the combustion method and with the combustion installation as defined in the appended claims.
More particularly, the present invention relates to a process for burning fossil fuels in which the combustion itself takes place in the presence of catalysts based on one or more vanadium compounds, in particular vanadium oxides with vanadium in various oxidation steps, of which Vs + as in V20s are the most common and stable oxidation step. VO; is the end product of the oxidation o. a. of vanadium, of lower oxides. of ammonium vanadates, and of sulfides and nitrides when heated in air. V20s is slightly (0.5-0.8 g / l) soluble in water: herein it forms solutions that easily become colloidal.
As mentioned, combustion in the presence of a vanadium catalyst results in more complete combustion, so that the emission of incompletely burned hydrocarbons to CO is reduced, for example in favor of CO2. A direct consequence of this is that the effect of the catalyst is greater in percentage for eg crude petroleum than for fuel that has already undergone several refining steps. A further consequence of the more complete combustion is the decrease in fuel consumption.
Contrary to this decreased fuel consumption, a proportionally decreased emission of the "metallic additives in the fuel" is observed as well as a decrease in the total CO2 emissions. Important side effects are also that the oxidation of nitrogen to NOx and of the sulfur in the fuel to SOx are inhibited so that the emission of the corresponding acids decreases.
The vanadium oxides can be brought into the combustion chamber as such or be present, but other vanadium compounds can also be used. Under the influence of the high temperature and possibly pressure, these vanadium compounds are converted into a vanadium oxide in the combustion chamber. - or thermally. or by a redox mechanism in the presence of, for example, other metals, especially to vanadium pentoxide, which has the greatest catalytic activity of all vanadium oxides.
According to the present invention, the vanadium compounds can be used in the catalytic combustion or in combination with other metal compounds. preferably metal oxides. Especially the oxides and others
EMI2.1
connections of Ba. Fe. Ni. Cr. Cr. Pd, Pt. AI, Cu. Rh. Ti. Mg and Zn are eligible. Certain combinations still improve the catalytic effect in favor of a more complete combustion. A very suitable combination is the use of a vanadium compound together with a copper compound. preferably vanadium pentoxide with copper acetate and water as a solvent. In connection with the use in combination with others
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
metal compounds, reference can be made to the above-mentioned patents which for this aspect are considered to be part of the present specification.
The vanadium compounds can be supplied during combustion or be present via a liquid or solid carrier material. For example, solid support materials of a very different structure and specific surface can be impregnated with vandium compounds alone or in combination with other metal compounds. Examples of such materials are a silica gel substrate, an aluminum oxide substrate and other ceramic products such as described for catalysts used in the purification of exhaust gases. Suitable carrier materials can be found in the above-mentioned patents which are considered part of this disclosure for this aspect. The application form with fixed carriers is less suitable for use with combustion engines, both in terms of installation and replacement after exhaustion.
On the other hand, this application form can easily be implemented in combustion plants such as eg oil boilers.
For use in engines, the vanadium compounds and their combinations with other metal compounds of the present invention are preferably used from a solution or dispersion in water or in another suitable solvent. Suitable water-soluble vanadium compounds for use in the present invention are, for example, vanadium oxides, alkali metal vanadates. ammonium vanadate. acetate complexes. etc.
When the aqueous solution or dispersion enters the hot combustion chamber, the water immediately evaporates, leaving a very finely distributed catalyst cloud that acts as a fluidised bed. The temperature in the chamber is usually high enough to dissolve any hydrate complexes and to oxidize the various vanadium compounds to divanadium pentoxide in the presence of oxygen.
In a very suitable method according to the present invention. especially for use with 'liquid fuel' engines. the air for combustion is passed through an aqueous solution or dispersion of the vanadium compound - through a so-called wash bottle - whereby the air is saturated with the water containing catalyst to form an aerosol. The aerosol is then led to the combustion chamber, eg the engine, via the air inlet where it performs its catalytic function during combustion.
This washing bottle method is a good method to maximize the surface area and thus the number of active reaction sites of the catalyst. Attached Figure 1 shows an example of a wash bottle design ensuring a fine distribution of the incoming air.
The simplest procedure in the wash bottle method is to start from a saturated (0.08 g V20s I 100 ml water) or even supersaturated solution. The flow rate of the gas flow then determines the amount of catalyst that
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
will be added. In turn, the flow rate depends on the pressure difference between inlet (l) and outlet (2) and the minimum diameter of the inlet or outlet.
In order to saturate the incoming gas as efficiently as possible and at the same time avoid splashing the liquid, the inlet of the gas is bent upwards. and provided with a widening funnel that opens onto a glass filter (4). If necessary, a sponge is also made, for example, from ceramic material. made of glass wool or steel wool on the liquid surface (3).
Placing the wash bottle as a side-match of the air and oxygen supply lines - either before or after an engine air filter - does not limit the total amount of incoming air (oxygen).
To avoid possible deactivation by water. we would like to mention that a less polar and self-pure burning solvent such as ethanol can be used to replace water. In principle, other alcohols or other organic solvents, for example heptane or ethylene glycol, are also suitable. The advantage of these solvents over water is that they remain liquid well below freezing point.
Finally, mixtures of solvents are also suitable, for example an ethanol / water mixture.
If with vanadium pentoxide. copper acetate (Cu (Ac) 2) is added, an improvement of the catalytic action occurs. A suitable ratio is from 0.1 to 10 parts by weight, preferably 2 to 5 parts, of copper acetate for 1 part by weight of V20. It is not yet known which function Cu (Ac) 2 has in the catalytic action. One possibility is that an acetate complex is formed which decreases the bonding strength of the water jacket and is more volatile than vanadium oxide. On the other hand, it is known that the structure of vanadium oxide in solution is very dependent on the pH and it is possible that the acetate affects the pH so that vanadium oxide is brought into a more soluble form.
Another form of administration of the catalyst-containing solution is the direct injection and atomization into the combustion chamber via a separate injector but simultaneously with the fuel and air injection. This form is also preferred for large combustion plants such as blast furnaces.
Contacting the catalyst with the fuel does not necessarily have to be through a separately formed aerosol. The catalyst can also be added directly to the fuel, e.g. in amounts corresponding to from 0.01 to 5 ppm of V205. In this case, for a good distribution of the catalyst, it is advantageous to use a vanadium derivative which dissolves better in the fuel, for example an acetylacetonate complex, such as V (acac) 3.
VO (acac) 2. By complexing V20s in an acetate form, such as for example VO (Acac) 2 or V2 (Ac) 6, the catalyst becomes more volatile on the one hand, which is important in the application form with the washing bottle. and on the other hand more soluble in hydrocarbons,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
so that a better molecular distribution is achieved. especially important for the direct addition discussed here. If a commercial vanadium acetylacetonate is added directly to the fuel, a similar but less efficient catalytic activity has been established as with the combination of vanadium oxide and copper acetate in water by the washing bottle method.
It is also possible to fix the catalyst on the surface of the reactor vessel, e.g. the engine inner wall, or even on a sponge-like support structure within the reaction vessel. e.g. silica gel. or a zeolite. In this form it is possible to use the catalyst in incinerators such as, for example, fuel oil boilers.
For large industrial incinerators such as coal-based power plants. lignite and heavy fuel oil, industrial spraying and misting techniques can be used to involve the catalyst in the combustion process.
The combustion method of the present invention can also be combined with the catalytic purification of the exhaust gases as described in the above patent literature.
The following examples illustrate the use and results of vanadium catalysts during combustion without, however, limiting the invention thereto.
Example 1 In a washing bottle of the type as described m. B. t. Fig. 1, a saturated solution of V20s in commercially demineralized water with 4 parts by weight of copper acetate per part by weight of V20s was applied. This washing bottle was placed in the air line between the air filter and the engine of a passenger car brand CHRYSLER VOYAGER with 2500 cc petrol engine. In the following conditions, consumption was compared with and without a washing bottle over a distance of 1100 km.
The test was carried out each time after maintenance and after changing the air and oil filter, both from the same distributor; the speed was determined by cruise control at 3000 RPM. We drove at night to keep the cruise control as much as possible. During the first ride without a catalytic converter, consumption averaged 11.76 liters per 100 km.
During the second ride with a catalytic converter, consumption was measured of 10.83 liters per 100 km. A period of time was run between the two test runs with a catalyst to "saturate" the engine with the product. The same route was taken and there was always refueling in the same petrol stations: super 95% octane, unleaded. Thus, in this test, a consumption drop of 7.9% was observed using the described catalyst.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Example 2 In a washing bottle as described m. B. t. Fig. 1, a saturated solution of V 2 O 5 in commercially demineralized water was applied with 50 parts by weight of copper acetate per part by weight of VO; This washing bottle was placed in front of the air filter of a passenger car brand VW passat with 1900 cc diesel engine. Until the use of the catalytic converter, this car had an average consumption of 8.5 1/100 km.
After commissioning the catalyst, a constant average consumption of 7.5 1/100 km was observed after 1000 km, which corresponds to a decrease of 12% t. o. v the original consumption.
Example 3 Direct addition of pure V205 into the fuel of a passenger car brand FORD sierra with 2300 cc diesel engine.
Before the test, the car had an average consumption of 8.1 1/100 km in a combination of urban traffic (average 40 km / h) and motorway traffic (average 100 km / h). About 1 ppm of V205 in powder form was added per refueling.
The average consumption, after driving 1980 km with catalyst addition, is 7.27 1 / 100km which corresponds to a consumption decrease of 10.2%.
After this, under normal load and with catalytic converter over 2220 km, an average consumption of 7.38 1 / 100km was observed, which corresponds to a decrease of 8.9% compared to the original consumption.
No further vanadium oxide was added afterwards. Consumption evolved after approx. 2500 km to 8.25 1 / 100km with a combination of urban traffic (average.
45 km / h) and motorway traffic (average 120 km / h).
