EMI1.1
<tb>
<tb> semis <SEP> Levée <SEP> Rendement <SEP> BEF/H
<tb> 1 <SEP> avril <SEP> 20 <SEP> avril <SEP> 65 <SEP> T/H <SEP> 117.000
<tb> 15 <SEP> avril <SEP> 2 <SEP> mai <SEP> 60 <SEP> T/H <SEP> 108.000
<tb> 30 <SEP> avril <SEP> 15 <SEP> mai <SEP> 55 <SEP> T/H <SEP> 99.000
<tb>
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

SEED TREATMENT PROCESS
FOR DELAYED GERMINATION The present invention relates to the establishment of seedlings, in particular of sugar beet seeds and it relates more specifically to a seed treatment process which delays germination.
Sowing of sugar beet seeds is generally done in the spring. However, if the climatic conditions allow the land to be prepared and sown earlier in the season, the farmer can obtain significantly improved yields per hectare.
The table below gives the yields and the financial reports per hectare obtained with different sowing and sowing dates.
EMI1.1
<tb>
<tb> sowing <SEP> Emergence <SEP> Yield <SEP> BEF / H
<tb> 1 <SEP> April <SEP> 20 <SEP> April <SEP> 65 <SEP> T / H <SEP> 117,000
<tb> 15 <SEP> April <SEP> 2 <SEP> May <SEP> 60 <SEP> T / H <SEP> 108,000
<tb> 30 <SEP> April <SEP> 15 <SEP> May <SEP> 55 <SEP> T / H <SEP> 99,000
<tb>
The possibility of advancing the time of emergence by three to four weeks, for example, improves the yield per hectare by 10 to 20 tonnes. This can represent for the farmer an additional financial gain of the order of 18,000 to 36,000 BEF per hectare.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
However, the sowing of land is still, at present, always dependent on climatic conditions, and this constitutes a serious problem and a disadvantage for the farmer.
The invention aims to overcome this drawback and to solve this problem in order to allow the timing of sowing to be advanced, whatever the climatic conditions. To this end, it offers a special seed treatment process which delays germination until the soil temperature has reached the desired threshold.
The process according to the invention is defined in the claims.
The seeds thus coated in accordance with the invention can be sown in autumn and remain waiting in the soil for several months before germinating.
Thanks to the invention, it is possible, under the climatic conditions prevailing in Belgium, for example, to obtain an emergence in the ground from the beginning of April, which makes it possible to obtain a yield per hectare. around 75 tonnes, an improvement of 10 to 15 tonnes per hectare and a very significant additional financial gain.
The basic idea of the invention is to use for sowing seeds protected by a waterproof and biodegradable substance having a predetermined biodegradation rate over time. The seeds can thus overwinter in the soil while retaining their full germination potential. In February, the waterproof layer will be destroyed and as soon as the temperature
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the soil reaches 8 to 100C, the seeds which will have "pumped" the water from the soil, will germinate. In order to save the soil structure during the winter, a winter-resistant cover plant will be sown in October (for example escurgeon, grasses, vetches, ...).
A suitable herbicide treatment (Glyphosate, sulfonyl, ...) will be carried out at the end of winter to destroy this cover crop.
One embodiment of the invention consists in coating the seeds with a film of biodegradable plastic material of low molecular weight.
Common biodegradable plastic films have molecular weights in the range of 30 to 50,000. If some of these products pass into the liquid state (amorphous stage) at relatively low temperatures (58OC to 600), they are still too viscous than to be sprayed. The invention proposes applying a biodegradable plastic film whose liquefaction temperature and low viscosity meet the processing conditions (for example polycaprolactones whose molecular weight can range from 4000 to 50,000).
CAPA 240, for example, goes to the amorphous stage at t 55 C. In addition, given its low viscosity at 70 C, it is relatively easy to spray it onto beet seeds already coated with a layer of inert materials (flour of wood, glues, clays, ...) which contain the essential fungicides. These coated seeds (95% of the European market) receive a smoothing outer layer and are in no way damaged by the spraying of a liquid plastic material at t 70-80 C.
The plastic film chosen must be degraded
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
for mid-March to allow the water to reach the seeds. The plastic sprayed must be biodegradable by bacteria in order to better control biodegradation (bacteria to be selected or natural products) over time.
Seeds can be sown in very different types of soil in terms of the following parameters, which will influence the speed of degradation: ph, humud content, albedo and exposure, microbial life, mineral content, water retention capacity, drainage, height of the water table, previous crops, residual phytosanitary products (fungicides, insecticides, herbicides), etc.
By the choice of the type of plastic material and / or by the thickness of the protective layer, the method according to the invention makes it possible to adjust the rate of biodegradation of the protective film and to ensure that the semen comes into contact with the soil water in the first weeks of March. Biodegradability depends on the size and activity of the soil microbial flora. Sprays of bacteria-rich liquids can be applied at the start of the year to speed up the degradation process. It may be necessary to select specific bacteria.
The advantages of this embodiment are that the spraying process can be carried out on an industrial scale by the so-called Hot-Melt Fluid-Bed Coating technique, and that handling and sowing pose no problem.
Another embodiment consists in treating the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
seeds by a multi-layer coating technique, one of the layers of which is made of a waterproof and biodegradable plastic material.
To be able to be used in the process according to the invention, that is to say so that the rate of biodegradation of the coating is properly controlled, it can preferably be carried out as described below.
On seeds coated with a layer of inert material containing fungicides is applied a smoothing layer consisting, for example of a very flexible and very hygroscopic clay, such as the product known as Filtrol, so that the outer surface seed is as smooth as possible.
Then the coating is carried out using a biodegradable plastic material reduced to powder and added with an adhesive so as to produce a stable layer having a sufficient thickness, for example 150 to 250 microns. As plastic material, simple or mixed polycaprolactones can be used, for example CAPA 240, CAPA 650 and CAPA 656, with the addition of glue in proportion of 2% by weight.
On this layer of biodegradable plastic material is sprayed a protective layer, for example an aqueous solution of resins about 30 microns thick. This last layer will prevent the seeds from sticking to each other or to the walls of the devices used during the last phase of this multi-layer coating process. This operation consists in subjecting the seeds (coated by the three layers described above) to a temperature of the order of 700C
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
- 750C for a certain time (for example 20 to 30 minutes depending on the type of plastic used).
At these temperatures, the small grains (<90 microns) of plastic material melt and merge together to form, after cooling, a homogeneous and impermeable plastic layer.
The seeds, surrounded by an impermeable plastic film applied either by the "Hot-Melt Fluid-Bed Coating" technique, or by "multi-layer coating", for example, can be sown in autumn. As long as the plastic layer remains impermeable, the water in the soil cannot reach the germs, which will therefore remain waiting for several months. The plastic layer will be thick enough to withstand attacks by soil bacteria, which are weaker in winter.
In February (March) suspensions rich in bacteria will be applied to the sowing lines in order to accelerate and complete the biodegradation of polycaprolactones. As soon as the plastic layer is cracked, the water will penetrate into the seeds and cause: 10) a significant swelling of the smoothing layer which is made of a very hygroscopic clay (Filtrol for example) and this swelling will promote the disintegration of the plastic film, which will facilitate the exit of the hypocotyle of the beet; 20) humidification of the seed which will germinate as soon as the soil temperature is sufficient (8 C to 10 C).
The feasibility of the process is based on the following facts: - The biodegradability of polycaprolactones is a proven and recognized fact.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
- Both the "Coating" technique and the "multi-layer coating" technique made it possible to obtain seeds completely surrounded by an impermeable plastic film.
- If it is impossible to prepare a soil that is insufficiently dry, it is however still possible to spray on the fields in February or March.
- Glyphosate (trade name: ROUND-UP) is a total systemic herbicide whose residues, fallen on the ground, are degraded by bacteria and do not interfere in any way with the germination of beets.
- The waste from the cover crop forms a mulch which protects the young seedlings from April frosts.
