<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
koolwaterstoffen.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Om dit conform de uitvinding mogelijk te maken past men sequentieel de volgende stappen toe : a) De verontreinigde grond ondergaat een thermische extractie in een droger waarvan de wand uitwendig op de gewenste temperatuur wordt gehouden terwijl in bedoelde reactor een fluidum onder vorm van lucht of stoom op een temperatuur tussen nagenoeg 1000 en 4000C wordt geïnjecteerd ; b) De droge grond wordt uit de droger afgevoerd terwijl de met polluenten beladen gas-of stoomfase naar een condensor-scrubber wordt geleid die door minstens een hydrofoob oplosmiddel of een mengsel van minstens twee hydrofobe oplosmiddelen continu wordt gespoeld en waarin de waterdampen en de verontreinigingen condenseren ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
aanwezige biomassa worden minstens in een separator zoals een bezinker of een centrifuge uit elkaar gescheiden, waarbij door gravitatie het slib wordt geloosd terwijl water en afgassen over een filter worden gevoerd dat in staat is om water en met kleine resthoeveelheden beladen luchtstromen te reinigen terwijl het hydrofoob oplosmiddel uit bedoelde bezinker naar hogerbedoelde condensor-scrubber voor recyclage wordt teruggevoerd ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
Doorheen
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
bewaren.

"Method for thermo-biological cleaning of soils contaminated by organic compounds and device for applying this method"
This invention relates to a method for thermo-biological cleaning of soils contaminated by organic compounds.
Soil contaminated by organic pollutants can be remediated in various ways. The contaminated soil can be excavated after which a chemical, physical or biotechnological treatment takes place. The contaminated soils can also be treated biologically without prior excavation.
The biotechnological path is regarded as the most environmentally friendly and holistic. Most of the biotechnological soil cleaning usually takes place through what is called "land farming", in which microorganisms break down pollution directly in the soil with the addition of water, nutrients and oxygen.
The efficiency of such a method proves to be problematic in two cases. Firstly, when the clay content of the soil is too high to ensure good air and water circulation in the soil and, secondly, when the contamination consists of complex compounds that are difficult to degrade, highly hydrophobic and low water-soluble compounds which exhibit low bioavailability or from compounds which exhibit both previous properties, such as, for example, polycyclic aromatic
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
hydrocarbons.
In practice, when such situations arise, the use is often made of thermal treatment of the soil at a high temperature. The soils to be treated are then heated in a rotating drum to about 600C and above (depending on the nature of the pollutants to be destroyed or removed). In order to get the soil to such a high temperature, the soil is in many cases heated directly, d. w. z. that the ground comes into direct contact with a flame. Due to the high temperature, the pollutants desorb and volatilize. They enter the gas phase.
The collected gas stream is then cleaned by afterburning at a very high temperature (> 1000 C). Disadvantages are the high energy consumption and the limited application possibilities of the end product, which can no longer be regarded as "soil", because the structure was destroyed by the thermal treatment. In addition, there is always the risk that dangerous compounds, such as dioxins, are formed when the soil is heated directly, which can lead to additional contamination of the soil. The development of dioxins can also arise from after-burning of the waste gases.
The object of the invention is now to prescribe a method and an apparatus built up in the spirit of this method which allow the remediation of soils contaminated with organic pollutants, wherein the disadvantages of the thermal process briefly outlined above can be avoided.
The object of the invention is that the method according to the invention can be applied to all types of soil, in particular soils with a large clay fraction. The object of the invention is then
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
also, inter alia, degrade or neutralize linear, branched or aromatic hydrocarbons as well as polyaromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyl compounds. Such compounds are found, inter alia, in mineral oil, petroleum fractions, tar, pesticides, coolants and so on. Finally, the object of the invention is to create a wide range of application possibilities which are broader than the classical biotechnological means, both in terms of the soil type and the characteristics of the pollutants.
To make this possible in accordance with the invention, the following steps are sequentially applied: a) The contaminated soil is thermally extracted in a dryer, the wall of which is externally kept at the desired temperature, while in the reactor a fluid in the form of air or steam is maintained. injected at a temperature between about 1000 and 4000C; b) The dry soil is drained from the dryer while the pollutant-laden gas or steam phase is passed to a condenser scrubber that is continuously purged by at least one hydrophobic solvent or a mixture of at least two hydrophobic solvents and in which the water vapors and contaminants are condense;
c) The condensate from said condenser scrubber consisting of water, hydrophobic solvent and impurities is passed on to a reactor with at least two liquid phases, t. w. an aqueous phase and the hydrophobic solvent, hereinafter referred to as a two-phase reactor; d) The water, hydrophobic solvent and water contained in said two-phase reactor
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Biomass present is separated at least in a separator such as a settler or a centrifuge, whereby the sludge is discharged by gravity while water and waste gases are passed over a filter that is able to clean water and air flows loaded with small residual quantities while it is hydrophobic solvent is returned from said settler to the above-mentioned condenser scrubber for recycling;
e) The air discharged from the above-mentioned filter is heated to serve as a desorbent in the above-mentioned dryer.
The invention also relates to the device as built up for carrying out the method according to the invention.
Other details and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a method for thermobiologically cleaning soils contaminated by organic compounds and apparatus for applying this method.
This description is given by way of example only and in no way limits the invention. The reference numbers refer to the appended figure.
The only figure is a schematic representation of a device based on the method according to the invention.
The first step of the method according to the invention takes place in a dryer 1 in which the contaminated soil is introduced by any means.
Reference 2 schematically represents the path traveled by the contaminated soil in the direction of the dryer 1. In practice,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
more than one extracter can be connected in series or in parallel.
The dryer 1 here consists of a cylindrical reactor, the contents of which can be heated by means of indirect heating via the wall and / or direct heating with hot air or steam. It has been found that warming up to a temperature between about 2500 and 4500C provides excellent results for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. As a dryer, use can be made of a reactor such as the one developed by VOMM. An essential and important characteristic for the method must be seen in the fact that the drying process of the grounds introduced into the dryer is effected by heating the outer wall of the dryer (conduction) and, if applied, by injecting hot air or steam into the dryer (convection). At no time do the grounds to be cleaned come into contact with the flame.
This, as pointed out in the introduction, is very important. In the reactor, blades are mounted on a rotating central shaft. These vanes continuously move the soil in the direction of what can be considered the dryer tip. In the figures, the drain is schematically represented with reference 3. The drying process in the cylindrical reactor forming the dryer thus takes place continuously.
A speed of between about 350 and 450 revolutions per minute is imposed on the central axis, not shown in the figures, so that the soil is flung onto the heated inner wall of the cylindrical reactor in a thin film of a few millimeters.
Pre-heated air or steam, whether or not overheated, can flow below a certain flow rate,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
depending on the required reactor configuration for efficient desorption of the pollutants from the ground, are allowed in the reactor. The thin layer of soil and the high turbulence ensure that the heat transfer takes place efficiently, both by convection via the heated air flow and by conduction through the wall of the cylindrical reactor that forms the dryer.
Thanks to the rapid heating, the water in the ground heats up immediately so that steam is created in the upstream part of the dryer. The combined action of heating and steam generation ensures that the pollutants present are desorbed and entrained with the circulating fluid flow.
When the soil is too dry, steam may be injected into the upstream section of the reactor.
Tests have shown that the method according to the invention does not require temperatures above 400 ° C for very high-boiling pollutants.
Only by way of example can reference be made to optimum dimensions of the reactor. This reactor can have a length of 7.5m, 2.2 to 5m width and 2.2m height.
The thermal capacity of the dryer ranges from 1.2 to 1.5 million kcal / h. When the emphasis is on drying the soil, this means that up to 1 m3 of water can be evaporated per hour. In the case of soil remediation, therefore, 5 to 20 tons of soil can be processed per hour. In such operating conditions, the residence time of the soil in the reactor is about 10 minutes.
When leaving the dryer 1 formed by the cylindrical reactor, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
cleaned soil and the airflow separated from each other in a cyclone 4. The dried and cleaned soil leaves the cyclone at the bottom. The path that the cleaned soil forms is indicated by reference 5. If no hot air or steam is injected and dust is not generated in the dryer, the cyclone may be omitted or shorted. The dried and cleaned soil is then collected at the end of the dryer at the bottom while the vapor phase at the top is extracted to the condenser scrubber 7 via line 6.
If necessary, a further biotechnological treatment of the cleaned soil can take place to make it biologically active again and to remove possible residual contamination. The airflow present in cyclone 4 is removed therefrom via a pipe schematically represented by reference 6 to end up in a condenser scrubber 7. The condenser scrubber 7 is continuously rinsed with at least one hydrophobic solvent to avoid recrystallization of the pollutants and blockages caused thereby in downstream pipes, such as, inter alia, the pipe 8 which opens into a two-phase reactor 9.
The condensate present in the two-phase reactor 9, consisting of water, hydrophobic solvent and impurities, is subjected in a first part of the reactor to a photo-oxidation process by intensive exposure, whereby the hydrophobic impurities are made more water-soluble; in a second part, the condensate is further biologically purified, separated into two liquid phases, t. w. an aqueous phase and the hydrophobic solvent. The waste gases escaping from the two-phase reactor 9 leave this two-phase reactor 9 through line 10. Through
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
line 11, the water, the hydrophobic solvent and the biomass from the two-phase reactor 9 reach a settler 12.
Although this is not presented in the schematic plan view, if necessary, a further separation of water, biomass and hydrophobic solvent biomass can be carried out in a centrifuge.
The water from the settler 12, together with the waste gases from the two-phase reactor, is led via line 13 to a filter 14. The sludge sludge present at the bottom of the settler 12 exits this settler through the conduit 15. If one or more hydrophobic solvents heavier than water are used, these solvents, together with the sludge sludge, will be at the bottom of the settler 12. Although not schematically presented, a further separation of blow-off sludge and hydrophobic solvent can also be carried out in a centrifuge if necessary.
The line 16 for the discharge of the hydrophobic solvent which is schematically represented in the figure is valid, for example, if a hydrophobic solvent lighter than water is used. In the case of a hydrophobic solvent heavier than water, the solvent at the bottom of the settler 12 will be drained along with the sludge and undergo additional separation.
Fresh hydrophobic solvent is supplied to the condenser scrubber 7 through line 18 at inlet 19.
A part of the sludge from the settler 12 can be recycled via the line 20 to the two-phase reactor 9.
The purified water can leave the filter 14 via line 21, while the purified gases, in the form of more or less purified air that
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
can be subjected to further treatment, leaving the same filter through the conduit 22 on which the purge conduit 23 is mounted. The inlet of fresh fluid (air or steam) takes place via line 24. If steam is used as carrier gas in the dryer, the purified water from line 21 can be reused for the generation of steam.
For the filter 14 already discussed, a BACOF filter is chosen, for example. This name stands for "Biological Activated Carbon Oxidative Filtration" and is based on the technology developed by BIOTIM N.V.
A clear advantage of the method according to the invention and of the device built up thereon is the smaller energy consumption. As already made clear in the introduction, excellent results are obtained here with a heating at a temperature of almost 1000 - 4000C of the dryer 1 compared to usual temperatures of at least 600C.
The end product leaving the establishment, t. w. the treated soil has a higher value than the ash that is created when higher temperatures are used, also when the soils to be treated come into contact with the flames. Depending on the residual concentration, the soil treated here can be reused for various purposes. The production of contaminated residual flows has been reduced to a minimum. The hydrophobic solvent as well as the circulating air can be recycled while the water leaving the device can be considered as completely pure.
The method according to the invention is clearly innovative because the processed soils leaving the device have their soil properties
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
keep it. The waste gases and sludge from the purification process are purified almost completely in a closed cycle.
Clearly, the invention is not necessarily limited to the above-described embodiment, and modifications could be made thereto as far as they fall within the scope of the appended claims.
