<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to a process for operating a blast furnace used for the production of cast iron by reduction of iron ores.
We know that, in a blast furnace, the charge traditionally consists of alternating layers of iron ore and coke loaded successively by the blast pipe. A current of hot air, called hot wind, injected by wind nozzles located slightly above the base of the blast furnace, ensures the combustion of coke.
This combustion of coke provides on the one hand the reducing gas required to effect the reduction of the iron oxides of the ore and on the other hand an amount of heat sufficient to cover the thermal needs of the chemical reactions and to ensure the fusion of the metal and gangue.
In addition to this dual role of heat source and reducing agent, coke also fulfills a third mechanical function, which is to constitute a support grid promoting the countercurrent movement of ascending gases and descending molten materials. .
For many years now, efforts have been made to reduce the kilowatting of coke in the blast furnace, that is to say the quantity of coke necessary for the production of one ton of pig iron.
Initially, such a reduction in coke consumption was obtained by injecting auxiliary fuels at the level of the wind nozzles, possibly combined with an increase in the temperature of the wind or even with an over-oxygenation of this wind.
Certain specific techniques then made it possible to achieve reductions in the cost per mile of coke far exceeding those which can be obtained by a simple injection of auxiliary fuels into the nozzles.
In this regard, various proposals are known relating to the injection of reducing agents at the level of the main nozzles and hot reducing gas at the level of the reserve zone of said tank furnace.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
By the expression "at the level of the main nozzles" is meant the level corresponding to the upper part of the crucible of the blast furnace, where the wind nozzles, said main nozzles, of a conventional blast furnace are located.
The reducing agents (auxiliary fuels) have long been liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons. At present, these liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons have however lost a good part of their economic interest in favor of coal. In some blast furnaces, up to 200 kg of coal are now injected per tonne of pig iron, which has reduced the coke cost by around 160 kg.
By the expression "reserve zone", well known to practitioners, is meant the region of the blast furnace tank in which the charge is at a temperature of about 1000oC. In this reserve zone, the charge is therefore still in the solid state.
The hot reducing gas injected into the reserve zone consists mainly of hydrogen (H,) and carbon monoxide (CO), with very small amounts of carbon dioxide (CO) and water vapor ( ho).
Many steelmakers are now looking for ways to further reduce the coke cost, either by increasing the rate of coal injection or by other means.
The present invention is part of a more recent development, which consists in injecting pulverized coal and oxygen at the level of the main nozzles and hot reducing gas at the level of the reserve zone of the blast furnace.
In this context, it has already been proposed, in particular by patent application EP-A-0302041, to inject into the reserve zone a hot reducing gas derived from the blast gas from said blast furnace. To this end, the top gas is freed from the CO it contains, either by a decarbonation operation or by reforming a reducing gas, that is to say by chemical dissociation of the CO by means of a gaseous hydrocarbon; in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1
in both cases, the gas rich in CO and H2 obtained is brought to a temperature between 850. C and 1200. C and injected at the level of the reserve zone of the blast furnace.
Although these two techniques are in themselves interesting, it appeared that they have certain drawbacks from the point of view of their application in connection with the control of a blast furnace.
Decarbonation is a complex separation operation, the effectiveness of which depends on many factors such as the flow rate, pressure and CO2 content of the treated gas. Its cost is high. In addition, it leads to a flow rate of reducing gas (CO + H2) lower than the flow rate of the mouth gas initially sampled.
The reforming of reducing gas from top gas produced at
EMI3.2
on the contrary, a quantity of reducing gas (CO + H2) greater than the initial volume of the top gas, due to the chemical dissociation of C02 'This method however requires large quantities of gaseous hydrocarbon, which are not always available under conditions economically attractive in steel factories.
The present invention relates to a process for operating a blast furnace, based on the simultaneous injection of pulverized coal and oxygen at the level of the main nozzles and of hot reducing gas at the level of the reserve zone, which combines the advantages of the two aforementioned techniques without presenting the disadvantages.
In accordance with the present invention, a method of operating a blast furnace, in which pulverized coal and an oxidizing gas are injected at the level of the main nozzles and a hot reducing gas at the level of the reserve zone of said blast furnace, is characterized in that one takes off gas from the mouth, in that one subjects the gas from the taken off to a partial decarbonation operation, in that one mixes said gas from the partially decarbonated mouth with a gaseous hydrocarbon, what is heated said mixture to produce by reforming a reducing gas at a temperature between 85C''C and 1200. C and in that this hot reducing gas is injected at the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
reserve zone of said blast furnace.
It is specified here that said oxidizing gas has an oxygen content of at least 21% by volume and preferably at least 55% by volume.
Advantageously, this oxidizing gas is injected in the "cold" state, that is to say that its temperature has not been raised by heating and is therefore substantially equal to ambient temperature.
It goes without saying that the bleed gas taken preferably comes from the blast furnace in which said injections are carried out. It is however not excluded to use blast gas from one or more other blast furnaces, either alone or in admixture with blast gas from said blast furnace.
The decarbonation method may be chosen in a conventional manner, taking into account in particular the nature and the state of the available top gas.
The decarbonation rate will be determined according to the composition and the flow rate of the available top gas, as well as the nature and the quantity of gaseous hydrocarbon necessary for the subsequent reforming operation. In practice, the partial decarbonation rate of the sample gas taken will be at least 50%, and it will preferably be between 85% and 95%.
The reforming of reducing gas may be carried out using any gaseous agent containing an appropriate hydrocarbon. For this purpose, it is preferable to use a gas available in the steel plant, for example coke oven gas, which contains a high proportion of methane (CH4) and is therefore particularly suitable for reacting with the CO of the top gas. .
The quantity of gaseous hydrocarbon required in turn depends on the quantity of CO to be dissociated, that is to say in fact the flow rate and the residual CO content of the partially decarbonated top gas.
The method of the invention therefore makes it possible to adapt the behavior of the blast furnace, in particular its setting to the mile of coke or the quantity of gas
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
reducer injected, by varying the quantity of top-off gas withdrawn, the rate of partial decarbonation of this gas and the quantity of gaseous hydrocarbon used for the reforming of reducing gas.
The process of the invention will now be described in more detail, with reference to the single appended figure, which schematically illustrates an example of implementation of this process.
In a blast furnace A, iron ore and coke are loaded in a conventional manner by the mouth. At the level of the main nozzles, oxygen (2) is injected on the one hand and pulverized coal (3) on the other hand. Oxygen is said to be "cold" because it is not preheated and is therefore at room temperature. A hot reducing gas (4) is also injected into the reserve zone of the blast furnace.
Finally, the blast gas (5) is collected at the top of the tank.
In application of the present invention, part (6) of the top gas (5) is withdrawn and this part (6) is subjected successively to the following two operations: a. in a first reactor B, partial decarbonation of the gas (6) is carried out, in order to enrich it with CO and H2 by extraction of an adjustable fraction of CO2 (7); b. the partially decarbonated gas (8) is mixed with coke oven gas (9) and the mixture (10) is introduced into a reactor C, heated by combustion of blast gas (11) also coming from the blast furnace; there occurs in this reactor C a dissociation of the CO2 present and a reforming of hot reducing gas, which is then injected (4) into the blast furnace at the level of the reserve zone.
The rest of the top gas (12) and the extracted CO2 (7) are intended for other uses.
The values corresponding to an example of implementation are indicated in the figure and shown in the table which follows; they are related to a ton of pig iron produced.

<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The decarbonation rate in reactor B is adjustable, in particular as a function of the CO2 content of the top gas (5) and the quantity of gaseous hydrocarbon (9) available.
In the illustrated case where the gaseous hydrocarbon is methane (CH4) supplied by coke oven gas, the quantity of hydrocarbon is fixed by the flow rate and the composition of the latter.
The setting of coke per mile (1) depends on the quantities injected at the main nozzles and at the reserve zone.
The quantity of hot reducing gas injected could in principle be as high as possible, in order to ideally replace most of the coke consumed in the blast furnace. However, it depends inter alia on the quantity of gaseous hydrocarbon (9) available.
The method of the invention makes it possible to adapt the pipe of the blast furnace by varying the quantity of hot reducing gas injected (4), c. at. d. by acting on the decarbonation rate in (B) and / or on the degree of reforming in (C).
The invention is not limited to the implementation which has just been described and illustrated. In particular, it extends to the use of gaseous agents other than coke oven gas and to the use of any suitable fuel for heating ensuring the reforming of reducing gas.
