PURIFICATION OF A SOLVENT "The present invention relates to the purification of a solvent, and in particular to a method intended for purifying methanol containing impurities such as acetone, ethyl methyl ketone, water, acid formic acid, formic aldehyde, acetic acid ester and methyl ester, catalytic amounts of acid and other solvents of this type.
Methanol is widely used during selective recrystallization and during extractive distillation. Due to its favorable dielectric, solvent and optical properties, methanol is also widely used in analytical chemistry, particularly in high yield liquid chromatography (HPLC), in organic synthesis, in analysis of pesticide residues, in ultraviolet spectroscopy and in the infrared, in water purification and separation analysis, in DNA and peptide synthesis.
As analytical chemistry techniques and analytical machines are always more sophisticated, it is necessary to develop methods of producing methanol with a very high level of purity so that it can be used as a standard solvent in such equipment.
The objective of the present invention is therefore to provide a method of producing methanol with a high yield, the level of purity of which is very high.
According to the invention, there is provided a purification method intended to purify methanol containing impurities such as acetone, ethyl methyl ketone, water, formic acid, formic aldehyde, acetic acid ester and methyl ester to produce methanol with a high level of purity, the method comprising the steps of:
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
- addition of a methanol reduction agent containing said impurities; - addition of a strong base to the mixture; - distillation of the mixture in a distillation column; and - recovery of the purified methanol from the distillation column.
According to a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, the methanol is once again purified by adding an additional base to the mixture before distillation. Preferably, the additional base is a weak base such as sodium carbonate.
Preferably, the mixture is heated after addition of the reducing agent. Advantageously, the mixture is heated to a temperature of at least 650 C for a period of one hour.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, after addition of the base, the mixture is heated to reflux and a sample of the mixture is taken several times in order to control the levels of impurities.
