<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
Voir S. Timoshenko."Strength of Matériels : Part 1 Elementary Theory and Problems, " 3ème édi rion, Robert E. Krieger Publishing
Co., j ; lalabar. Floride. 1984.

<Desc/Clms Page number 15>

"Method and apparatus for detecting cracks in retaining rings".
The present invention relates to the detection of cracks in metal crowns. The present invention relates more particularly to an expansion device to allow the detection of cracks in retaining rings.
Retaining rings are used to support the terminal windings of the generator rotor against the centrifugal force that occurs there during generator operation. Normally, the retaining rings are placed on the ends of the rotor windings, first heating these rings until they expand to the desired dimensions, then placing these rings on the terminal windings of the rotors, where the crowns are allowed to cool and contract in place. The retaining rings vary in size according to the size of the rotor windings to which these rings are adapted. The retaining rings are normally made of a non-magnetic material, for example an 18Mn5Cr alloy.
See NL Kilpatrick et al., Design and Use of Nonmagnetic Retaining Rings for Central Station Generators, Workshop Proceedings: Retaining Rings for Electric Generators, EPRI EL-3209, August 1983, for a more complete discussion of retaining rings and their application to rotor windings.
A series of failures of the non-magnetic retaining rings led to the determination that the 18Mn5Cr retaining rings and other prior carbon-reinforced non-magnetic rings were sensitive to moisture; see R. T.

In the presence of humidity and high stress, it is believed that a phenomenon known as corrosion cracking by the latent state of forces occurs in the retaining ring. The danger of such cracking by corrosion by the latent state of forces is that, when the cracks become sufficiently large, the retaining ring can burst, causing significant damage to the rotor and the stator of the generator.
The industry has responded to this serious material problem in different ways. A new material, ISMniSCr, has been developed which is non-magnetic and is of several orders of magnitude less susceptible to cracking by corrosion by the latent state of forces in the presence of moisture. This material is currently available.
The industry has also responded with the development of inspection crown inspection techniques to examine lSMn5Cr crowns to determine the presence of latent stress corrosion cracking, by providing for replacement. , when necessary, by retaining rings in I MnlSCr.
The preferred inspection technique normally involves inspecting the retaining rings while they are in place on the rotor windings. In this technique, a penetrating fluorescent dye is first painted on the outer surface of the retaining ring. This is then visually inspected to determine a corrosion cracking by the latent state of forces, which is accentuated by the penetrating fluorescent dye. Then, an ultrasonic examination or a visual examination using optical fibers is carried out on the internal surface of the retaining ring.
If corrosion cracking is determined by any of these inspection techniques, the retaining ring is removed from the rotor winding and replaced with a new ring.
Detecting cracks while the retaining ring is removed from the rotor winding is very difficult and impractical due to the closing of the cracks when the crown shrinks back to its original dimensions without constraint. A penetrating fluorescent dye or ultrasound examination cannot
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1
not detect any cracks in this state.
Therefore, after removal, the retaining rings are expanded by heating, placed on a specially designed mandrel, as shown in Figures la and lb, which gives a certain percentage of its expanded operational internal diameter to reach a stress level of at least 207 MPa associated with cracks by corrosion by the latent state of forces, and then the retaining rings are allowed to cool and they are allowed to contract. After a retaining ring has cooled, it is held by the mandrel in an expanded state under stress. In this way, the cracks remain open to allow detection in critical areas not hidden by the mandrel.
There are a number of disadvantages to this common inspection practice. These disadvantages are; (1) time of the inspection cycle (2) mandrels specially designed for different diameters of retaining rings.
The inspection cycle time using such a technique is long. The retaining ring must be heated. contracted on a mandrel at one end and then brought to cool. The retaining ring is then turned over to repeat the cycle on the other end.
In addition, it is of primary importance to have the mandrel necessary to achieve proper expansion or expansion. This requires a different mandrel for each diameter of the rotor end winding.
An object of the present invention is to allow a reduction in the cycle time of an inspection of a retaining crown and to eliminate the need to provide a whole series of mandrels specially designed for different diameters of retaining crowns. With the present invention, the retaining ring must not be heated, placed on a mandrel of suitable dimensions. properties and cooled before an inspection of the internal diameter of this retaining ring can take place.

Figure 2, there is shown schematically an apparatus 1 for detecting cracks along the inner surface of a metal ring.
The apparatus 1 comprises a device 9 intended to deform the metal crown so that at least two axes are formed therein and a part of the internal surface of the metal crown is enlarged, and a device 8 for detecting cracks along the part of the internal surface of the metal crown, which has been enlarged:
As illustrated in FIG. 4, according to a preferred embodiment, a member 10 which serves as a deformation device 9 is arranged so that it is capable of applying a force to the internal surface 4 of the metal crown 12. in y causing the formation of at least two axes and by enlarging a part A of the internal surface 4 of the metal ring 12.
The force applied by the deformation device 9 is capable of putting the metal crown 12 under bending at two points with definition of a major axis and a minor axis in the metal crown 12. The major axis of the metal crown 12 has a desired radius of curvature. Alternatively, as illustrated in Figure 12. a member 100 which serves as a deformation device 9 is arranged so as to be capable of applying a force to the external surface 110 of the metal ring 12 by causing the formation of 'at least two axes and the enlargement of a part A of the internal surface 4 of the metal ring 12.
More particularly and with reference to Figures 3 and 4, there is shown a member 10 which serves as a deformation device 9 of an apparatus 1 intended to detect cracks along the internal surface 4 of a metal crown 12. The organ
10 comprises a first element IIL having a first end 16 having a surface 18 having a radius of curvature, and a second element 20 having a first end 22 having a surface 28 having a radius of curvature. The second element 20 is slidably attached to the first element 14. In addition, a device 26 is provided for forcing the first element 1a and the second element 20 to slide away from each other.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
The forcing device 26 preferably requires the first element 14 and the second element 20 to slide away from one another so that the surface 18 of the first end 16 of the first element 14 is extended diametrically opposite the surface 24 of the first end 22 of the second element 20. In addition, the first element 14 preferably has a hollow interior 28 and a second end 30 which has a hole 32 ′ communicating with the hollow interior 28 The second element 20 preferably also includes a second end 34 which is disposed in the interior 28 of the first element 14 through the hole 32 existing at the second end 30 of the first element 14. The second end 34 of the second element 20 is attached to the first element 14.
The forcing device 26 can, for example. be constituted by a pressure orifice 17 provided on the first element 14 and communicating with the hollow interior 23 thereof so that, when pressure is applied to the pressure orifice 17 of the first element 14. the surface 1S of the first end 16 of this first element 14 is extended diametrically opposite the surface 24 of the first end 22 of the second element. This can be done, for example. by providing the arrangement of the pressure orifice 17 on the first element 14 so that this orifice communicates with the hollow interior 23 between the second end 34 of the second element 20 and the first end 16 of the first element 14.
When pressure is applied to the pressure port 17, the pressure prevailing in the hollow interior 23 of the first element 14 increases, by acting on the second end 34 of the second element 20. This causes this second element 20 to slide towards outside and extend diametrically away from the surface
18 of the first end 16 of the first element 14. The second element 20 is preferably tightly and slidingly attached to the first element 14.
The forcing device 26 can also be a mechanical jack 19, as illustrated in Figure 6. or a screw jack 21! as illustrated in Figure 7. The mechanical cylinder 19 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
put in extension by pushing it down on the lever arm 25. The screw jack 21 is made to extend by rotating the second element 20 anticlockwise with respect to the first element 14, when the second element 20 is screwed into the first element 14.
Preferably, the first element 14 is a cylinder and the second element 20 is a piston. The first end 16 of the cylinder is preferably removably attached to the cylinder. and the first end 22 of the piston is preferably removably attached to this piston.
The removable mounting of the first ends 16 and 22, respectively on the cylinder and on the piston, allows the same device 10 to be used for a whole series of diameters of metal crowns. When the member 10 is to be used with a variety of metal crowns 12 which are. for example, retaining rings 12 of different diameters, the first ends 16 and 22 are chosen so as to correspond to the retaining ring during inspection. The radius of curvature of the surfaces 18 and 24 of the first ends 16 and 22 of the first and second element 14 and 20 is preferably identical to the radius of curvature of the retaining ring which is inspected.
The length of the first ends 16 and 22 of the first and second elements 14 and 20 is preferably identical to the internal width of the retaining ring 12. If reference is made to FIG. 5, which is a sectional view of a retaining ring in which a member 10 is placed, the internal width of the retaining ring 12 is determined by the distance existing between the front end 36 and the rear end 38.
In the implementation of the invention, an organ
10 is removably attached to the ends 16 and 22 which have surfaces 18 and 24 with a radius of curvature which is essentially identical to the radius of curvature of a retaining ring. and which have a length which is essentially identical to the internal width of the retaining ring which is inspected. The member 10 is placed inside the retaining ring so
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
that the first ends 16 and 22 of the cylinder and of the piston are in contact with the internal surface 4 of the retaining ring in diametrically opposite locations.
A pump (not shown) is connected to ensure a connection of fluid to the pressure orifice 17 and a pressure is brought, for example hydraulically or pneumatically, into the hollow interior 28 of the cylinder. The pressure prevailing in the hollow interior 28 causes the surface 24 of the first end 22 of the piston to extend diametrically opposite the surface 23 of the first end 16 of the cylinder, the two surfaces 18 and 24 acting against the internal surface 4 of the retaining ring. The extension of the piston and of the cylinder subjects the retaining ring to bending at two points to bring it to the shape of an ellipse as shown in Figure 4.
Consequently, the retaining ring is expanded at the two locations A which correspond to the major axis of the ellipse formed. The retaining ring is caused to contract in two places which correspond to the minor axis of the ellipse, and this occurs when the surfaces 18 and 24 of the first ends 16 and 22, respectively of the cylinder and the piston. come into contact with the internal surface 4 of the retaining ring. This retaining ring is brought in expansion by the member 10 to the point where the radius of the part A under inspection, lying in the direction of the main axis of the ellipse, corresponds to the operating radius of the ring of retained when it was contracted on a terminal rotor winding.
The increase in the main diameter of a metal crown, which is for example a retaining crown, can be controlled by the measurement of the piston relative to the cylinder, for example the length x of Figure 4. The necessary amount of displacement of the piston relative to the cylinder can be calculated and plotted for the various parameters of the dimensions of the retaining rings. See S. Timoshenko. "Strength of Materials: Part 1 Elementary Theory and Problems," 3rd edition, Robert E. Krieger Publishing
Co., j; lalabar. Florida. 1984. Table i gives design parameters, as shown in Figure 8, for several retaining rings.

When the member 10 is in place and has been brought to an appropriate expansion,
the two parts A illustrated in FIG. 4 can be examined with regard to corrosion cracking by the latent state of forces thanks to the detection device 8 which is, for example, an ultrasonic device or a fluorescent dye system penetrating. After these two parts A have been examined, the pressure is lowered in the member 10 and the latter is caused to rotate to a position different from the remaining crown. The member 10 is then expanded, thereby making other parts of the internal surface 4 available for detection of corrosion cracking by the latent state of forces.
The member 10 is rotated and expanded several times at various locations of the retaining ring, and this as illustrated in Figure 9, to allow inspection of the entire internal surface 4 of the retaining ring . Alternatively, the retaining ring can be rotated (or caused to roll) to maintain a more convenient position of the member 10 in the vertical position. Four rotations and expansions of the member 10 are normally sufficient for the inspection of the retaining ring. Four rotations and ex: Danions of the member 10 at the positions indicated in FIG. 9 allow a partial overlap of the parts A inspected in order to ensure that each zone of the internal surface 4 of the retaining ring has been examined.
The member 10 also allows a greater expansion of the retaining ring than its corresponding expansion

after it has been contracted on a terminal rotor winding.
By increasing the radius associated with the main axis and by decreasing the radius associated with the minor axis of the ellipse formed in the retaining ring by the member 10 after an expansion of a predetermined sum, the resulting increase in the part A provides greater capacity for inspecting cracks by corrosion through the latent state of forces.
A second embodiment of a member 10 of an apparatus 1 for detecting cracks in a metal ring 12 is illustrated by Figures 10 and II which are diagrams and by Figures 12 and 13. The member 100 comprises a first element
104 having a surface 106 which is capable of conforming to a part 10S of the external surface 110 of the metal crown 12 and a second element 112 having a surface 114 which can conform to a part 116 of the external surface 110 of the crown metallic

12. In addition, there is a device 11S for attracting the first and the second element 104 and 112 towards each other.
The att3 device. ction 118 understands. for example. a device 120 for connecting the first and the second element 104 and 112, and a device 122 for forcing the first and the second element 104 and 122 towards each other. The forcing device 122 is connected to the connecting device 120 and is capable of attracting, preferably. the first and the second element 104 and 112 towards each other via the connecting device 120. The first and the second element 104 and 112 and the connecting device 120 define a plane 124 so that the surfaces 106.114 of the first and second element 104 and 112 are attracted towards each other along the plane 124 by the forcing device 122.
The forcing device 122 can include. preferably, a first traction device 127 and a second traction device 129, as illustrated in FIGS. 10 and 12.
The connecting device 120 may include a first bar 133 and a second bar 135 aligned with the previous one. The first and second bars 133 and 135 are connected to the first traction device 127 which is arranged between them. The link device

120 may also include a third bar 137 and a fourth bar 139 in alignment with the previous one. The third and fourth bars 137 and 139 are connected to the second traction device 129 arranged between them. The first and third bars 133 and 137 are each connected to the first element 104. while the second and fourth bars 135 and 139 are each connected to the second element 112. The first and second bars 133 and 135 are essentially parallel to the third and fourth bars 137 and 139.
The surfaces 106 and 114 of the first and second elements 104 and 112 are located essentially parallel to each other. and the first and second bars 133 and 135, as well as the third and fourth bars 137 and 139, are located essentially perpendicular to the surfaces 106 and 114 of the first and second elements 104 and 112. Figure 13 is a side view of the member 100 in place relative to a metal crown 12.
There is preferably a first pressure pad 130 and a second pressure pad 132 disposed along the first and second surfaces 106 and 104 respectively. The first and second pressure buffers 130 and 132 are provided for the purpose of protecting the parts 108 and 116 of the surface 110 of the metal crown 12, against which the surfaces 106 and 114 of the first and second element 104 and 112 press. , when they are attracted towards each other by the forcing device 122.
Alternatively, in the second embodiment, as illustrated in Figures II and 14, the forcing device 122 is connected to the connecting device 120 and is capable of pushing the first and the second element 104 and 112 thanks to the connection device 120 along the plane 124, and this towards each other. The forcing device can comprise a first pushing device 123 and a second pushing device 125. The connecting device 120 can, for example, include a first bar 126 and a second bar 123 in alignment with the previous one. The first and second bars 126 and 128 are each connected to the first and to the second element 154 and 112, and to the first and to the second pushing device 123 and 125.
The first and the second

thrust 123 and 125 can be constituted by an assembly of manual snaps 150, as illustrated in FIG. 15, or preferably by a piston of the hydraulic or pneumatic thrust type.
The member 100 may include a device 134 for suspending the metal crown 12 when it is in place between the surfaces 106 and 114 of the first and second element IOLL and 112, as illustrated in FIG. 12. The suspension device 134 preferably comprises a support structure 136 comprising four lines 138, each line 138 being connected to a corner 140 of the member 100. A corner 140 is formed at each place where the first or second element 104 and 112 connects to the first or second bar 126 and 128, when the forcing device 122 is a pushing device, or else where the first or the second element 104 and 112 connects to the first, to the second. at the third or at the fourth base when the forcing device 122 is a traction device.
The operation of the member 100 is essentially the same as the operation of the member 10. except that the bending at two points in the retaining ring 12 is ensured by a force which is applied to the outer surface of the metal ring 12 by the member 100, instead of a force which is applied to the internal surface 4 of the metal ring 12 by the member 10. As the force is applied by the member 100 to the parts 108 and
116 of the outer surface 110. against which the surfaces 106 and 114 of the first and second element press and 112. the main axis of the ellipse resulting from the bending at two points corresponds to the part A of the metal crown 12, and the minor axis corresponds to part B of the retaining ring, as illustrated in Figure
