<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

On
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
On raccorde
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
EMI7.2
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

"Method for sealing a leak of pressurized fluid, in particular oil or gas, and equipment for implementing this method"
The present invention relates to a method for sealing a leak of pressurized fluid in a pipeline, in particular an oil or gas leak, ignited or not, accidentally escaping from the production casing of an eruptive well following the partial or total destruction of the well production head (eruption head or Christmas tree) associated with the surface casing of said well, inside which are placed the production casing and the flow tube, called tubing , which conveys the oil or gas from the bottom of the well to the surface and which is suspended from the aforementioned production head, this surface casing being arranged in a guide tube.
Various methods are known for plugging oil or gas leaks in eruptive wells, and among others: a first method which uses explosives to blow the flame escaping from the leak by burning the oxygen which l maintenance, which then consists of placing a shutter on the production casing without interrupting the flow of oil and a second method which consists in drilling a well in the vicinity of the well presenting the leak so that the two wells are intersect and pour concrete through the new well to interrupt, when the concrete enters the leaking well, the flow of oil through it.
These methods have various drawbacks. Indeed, the first process is very dangerous to implement and requires the intervention of extremely specialized and necessarily very rare personnel, which makes it almost impossible to
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
rapid intervention when a large number of wells must be reconditioned simultaneously. As for the second method, it is, due to the drilling of a secondary well by which the sealing of the leaking well is carried out, slow and expensive, all the more so since the clogged well cannot be put back into production until after a new drilling eliminating the concrete plug.
The object of the invention is to remedy these drawbacks and to provide a reliable and practically harmless method which can be quickly implemented, at a cost lower than the cost of known methods, by personnel who need not be specialized in works of this kind.
To this end, according to the invention, said method consists in mechanically excavating the ground either with operator protection, or by remote control, to strip, below the level of the leak, a healthy zone of the guide tube, - to deform the latter by crushing in said healthy zone, to cause crushing of the tubing, in order to reduce the flow of oil or gas escaping from the well to a level such that it will allow injection either into the tubing or in the annular space remaining between the tubing and the production tubing, of a liquid, well known in the exploitation of petroleum and natural gas, the density of which is adapted to the depth of the drilling and to the pressure at the level of the production layer - and which aims to form a liquid plug which,

The process according to the invention and illustrated in the drawings relates to the sealing of an oil or gas leak, ignited or not, accidentally escaping from the production casing 1 of an eruptive well 2, following partial or total destruction of the production head 3 of the well fixed to the surface casing 2 'in which the casing of the
EMI5.1
production 1 and the flow tube 4 which carries oil or gas from the deposit to the ground surface and which is suspended from the production head 3.
By production tube 1 means the first tube which surrounds the central flow tube 4 and which delimits with the latter the abovementioned annular space 7, this production tube 1 resting on the ground up to the level of the producing rock. By 2 "guide tube is meant the tube of larger diameter which holds the land adjacent to the surface in place during drilling while the surface tube 2 ', on which the production head 3 is fixed, is the tube immediately adjacent to the guide tube, of a length greater than that of the guide tube and generally cemented to the latter and to the ground.
This process consists first of all, as shown in FIG. 1, of excavating the soil mechanically, with operator protection or by remote control, to expose, below the level of the leak 5, a healthy zone 6 of the 2 "guide tube.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
then proceeds, as shown in FIG. 2, to crush said guide tube 2 "at 8, in this healthy zone 6, until the flow tube 4 is crushed so as to reduce the flow of gas or oil s escaping from the well.
This crushing of the guide tube 2 "will be continued until the deformation of the flow tube 4 will reduce the flow to a level which will allow injection either into the flow tube 4 or into the annular space 7 remaining between the latter and the production casing, a liquid, well known in the exploitation of petroleum and natural gas, the density of which is adapted to the depth of the drilling and to the pressure prevailing at the level of the production layer, this liquid intended to form a liquid plug which prevents the rise of oil or gas in the flow tube 4 and in the annular space 7 and which puts the well 2 in the sleep state as long as the liquid plug is maintained.
To prevent the flow tube 4 and the production casing 1 from deforming under the effect of the oil or gas pressure in the well 2, when the members causing the above deformation are removed, and the flow which has been reduced at the level of the leak 5 does not increase again, we maintain, at 8 and as shown in FIG. 3, the
EMI6.1
tubes 2 ", 2 ', 1 and 4 in the state in which they were crushed to obtain the desired flow rate which allows the injection of the aforementioned liquid.
As shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, the guide tube 2 "is cut below the location 8 where it was crushed, in order to strip the surface casing 2 '.
A first sealed enclosure 9 ′ is created around the stripped zone 9 of said casing 2 ′, then at least one second sealed enclosure 12 is fixed on the latter, from which one drills from the surface tube 2 ′, either a conduit 13, or as in the embodiment illustrated in the drawings, on the one hand, a conduit 13 which opens into the annular space 7 and, on the other hand, an orifice 14 in the flow tube 4. We connect
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
then, on one or other of these sealed enclosures 9 ′ and 12, the injection pipes 15 for the above-mentioned liquid. The latter is then injected under pressure so that it distributes in the annular space 7 and in the flow tube or tubing 4 until the moment when it creates the liquid plug which puts
EMI7.1
the well in a state of sleep.
Provision could be made to join the aforementioned conduit 13 and the orifice 14 by tubing, so that the aforementioned liquid would be injected, no longer into the annular space 7 and the tubing 4, but directly into the latter, the liquid then descending in said tubing 4 and distributed, from the base of the latter, in the annular space 7.
We could still foresee the use of a
EMI7.2
another waterproof enclosure, also attached to the enclosure. 9, for example, opposite the first and from which a second conduit 13 would be drilled opening into the annular space 7. In this case, a conduit 13 would be drilled from the first sealed enclosure 12 in the production casing and an opening 14 in the tubing and a casing would be inserted in these conduits and apertures whose purpose is to avoid the short hydraulic circuit between the two conduits 13 drilled from the two aforementioned enclosures.
When the gas or liquid has stopped spouting at the level of the leak 5 and the well 2 is inactive, it is then possible, as shown in FIG. 6, to strip the production casing 1 above the crushing zone 8. The production casing 1 and the flow tube 4 are then closed at 44, in their bare area. The liquid plug is then maintained, and therefore the well in the sleep state, until the installation, in a manner known per se, of a new production head.
According to the invention and as shown in FIG. 7, advantageously, before cutting the tubes l and 4 below the level of crushing 8 to fix the new production head 3, as security in the event that the liquid plug
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
above would accidentally cease to have its effects and until the time of installation of the new well production head, a sealed chamber 18 resistant to pressure and capable of serving as a shutter. This chamber 18 is anchored on the sealed enclosure 9 ′ so as to cover the latter, the second sealed enclosure 12 as well as the stripped and closed area of said production tube 1 and flow tube 4.
This chamber 18 is dimensioned in a manner known per se.
It is from the interior of this chamber 18, accessible by means of an access valve 19, that one can proceed to the preliminary works for the installation of the new well production head as well as to the works of installation of the latter.
These works consist first of all in cutting, at 52, as shown in FIG. 8, substantially perpendicular to
EMI8.1
rement their axis and between the place 8 where the guide tube 2 "with the tubes it contains were crushed and the top of the sealed enclosure 9 ', the guide tube 2", the surface casing 2' and the production casing 1 without cutting the tubing 4.
As shown in FIG. 9, the cut sections of the tubes 2 "and of the casings 2 ′ and 1 are then raised, along their axis and by means of lifting means, such as hoists, provided in the chamber 18 and not shown. -this lead upwards the tubing 4, "which has not been cut. The abovementioned lifting is interrupted when the orifice 14, produced in said tubing for the injection of the abovementioned liquid, is situated above the level 52 where the 2 ″ tubes and 2 ′ and 1 tubes were cut. Still as shown in FIG. 9, the tubing 4 is maintained at 53 and below the level of the orifice 14 to immobilize it relative to the tubes 2 "as well as to the tubing 2 ′ and 1.
As illustrated in FIG. 10 and while continuing to maintain, at 53, the tubing 4, the latter is cut, at 54, between the place 53 where it is maintained and the orifice 14, so that the tubing 4 s extending below level 54, where it
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
has been cut, is partially sound and watertight.
The cut sections of the 2 "tubes, casings 2 ′ and 1 and tubing 4 are then removed from the chamber 18, as shown in FIG. 11, the latter always being maintained at 53. The second sealed enclosure 12 is separated from the sealed enclosure 9 ′ and injection tubing 15 and the upper part of said enclosure 9 ′ is dismantled in order, on the one hand, to clear the conduit 13 drilled in the casings 2 ′ and 1 and opening into the annular space 7 and, on the other hand, to allow the injection, at 56, through the tubing 15 connected to the sealed chamber 18, of the aforementioned liquid into the tubing 4 and the annular space 7, via the chamber 18 which would have been evacuated and the valve 19 would have been hermetically closed, in the event that the previously created liquid plug would lose its effectiveness.
The chamber 18 is provided with a drain pipe 48 which makes it possible to evacuate the oil, the gas or the liquid which would be introduced therein.
Then cut at 55, still as shown in FIG. 11, the casings 2 ′ and 1 substantially perpendicular to their axis below the level of the above-mentioned conduit 13 and along their axis, so that below the level of the cut 55 , said casings 2 ′ and 1 are sound and waterproof. After evacuation of the chamber 18, cut sections of casing, one can then proceed, from the interior of said chamber 18, to thread the casings and tubing for the laying, in a manner known per se, of the new head of well production.
To overcome any risk in the event of the well being awakened, the method according to the invention provides, as shown in FIG. 12, that, as soon as the tubing 4 is cut and is pending the carrying out of the subsequent operations as illustrated in FIG. 11, or during at least part of these operations, the free end 4 ′ of the tubing 4 is connected to a tube 49 opening out to the sealed chamber 18 and through which the abovementioned liquid can be injected directly in tubing 4, in case the liquid plug
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
would have lost its effects.
In the case where the tubing 4 would have collapsed in the production casing 1, the operations described above and illustrated in FIGS. 8 to 11 would then be carried out, with the exception of maintaining the tubing and cutting the latter because said tubing is absent at the place where said operations are carried out. After preparation of the tubes 2 ′ and production casing 1, the production head is put into place in a manner known per se and, after removal of the chamber 18 and the lower part of the sealed enclosure 9 ', recovering the tubing.
According to the invention, the equipment for implementing the above-mentioned process comprises a motorized civil engineering machine, not shown in the drawings, which is protected against fire, piloted or remote-controlled, and which is designed to produce in the ground a access ramp 20 to the eruptive well 2 and release the guide tube 2 ", around its entire periphery, below the level of the leak 5 (see FIG. 1). Said equipment then comprises, for deforming the above-mentioned casings, a mobile clamp 20 ' can be moved and guided, for example by rail, on the access ramp 20.
This clamp is formed, as shown in the
EMI10.1
Figure 13, by two pairs of non-deformable beams 21, 21 'and 22, 221 hinged, about a vertical axis 23, at one of their ends and arranged in one or more stirrups 24 placed near the ends of the clamp opposite the axis 23 so that the latter can be separated, at their ends opposite the aforementioned hinge, by a distance greater than the external diameter of the guide tube 2 ". Double-acting cylinders 25 are fixed in the or the stirrups 24 so as to be able to act on the pair of beams 22, 22 ′ in order to move it apart or bring it closer to the other pair of beams 21, 21 ′ to crush the guide tube 2 "and the tubes arranged at the inside of it.
Each pair of beams is advantageously lined, at the places of the beams intended to cooperate with the guide tube 2 ",
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>

To keep the tubes crushed at 8, the equipment comprises a vice 27, the two jaws 28 of which are formed, as shown in FIG. (3) by the above-mentioned elements 26 which are bolted one on the other, before be released from the clamp, which remains in the closed position until complete bolting, to maintain the crushing of the 2 "guide tube and the inner tubes, which has been achieved by the clamp.
The above-mentioned equipment also comprises four semi-cylindrical elements 29, 29 ′, as shown in FIG. 14, which have an internal diameter slightly greater than the external diameter of the surface casing 2 ′ and which are intended to constitute, by superimposing them two in pairs and by assembling them to each other, the first enclosure 9'susdite. These elements 29 and 291 each have, along their free edges parallel to their axis 30, flanges 31 and 31 ′ to allow their assembly, using bolts, in order to form the enclosure 9 ′ around the casing 2 ', as well as flanges 32 and 32' perpendicular to the axis 30 which are arranged around the periphery of their bases.
These flanges 32 and 32 'are intended to cooperate, in order to maintain semi-circular joints 33, 33' and 33 "resting on the surface casing 2 'and on the elements 29 and 29' near their base so to ensure the tightness of the spaces 34 and 34 ′ comprised between the surface casing 2 ′, the elements 29 and 29 ′ the joints 33, 33 ′ and 33 ″, with semi-circular rings 35, 35 ′ and 35 ″ which are supported on the seals 33, 33 ′ and 33 ″ when they are bolted to the flanges 32 and 32 ′ presented by the elements 29 and 29 ′. The rings 35, 35 ′ and 35 ″ have their internal wall which is advantageously in the form of a conical ramp 36 on which the corresponding seal 33, 33 ′ or 33 ″ is supported, which has a trapezoidal section, so that, when the rings 35,
351 and 3511 are bolted to the flanges 32, 321 and 32 ", the seals 33, 33 'and 33" move
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
on the ramps 36 to make the chamber 9 ′ formed by the elements 29 and 29 ′ coaxial with the surface casing 2 ′, to ensure perfect sealing of the spaces 34 and 34 ′ and to oppose any movement of the enclosure 9 ', along the axis 30, whatever the load supported by said enclosure.
The seal between the elements 29 and 291 is produced by seals 37 extending parallel to the axis 30.
The aforementioned sealed enclosure 12 is fixed, for example by welding, to one of the elements 29 ′ and contains drilling means 38 whose power take-off 39 is external to the enclosure and enters the latter through a cable gland 40. The aforementioned cable gland is arranged in a threaded plug 40 'screwed onto the body of the enclosure 12. So that, when the conduits 13 and opening 14 have been drilled in them. casings 2 ′ and 1 and in the tubing 4, the drilling means 38 can be recovered and the threaded plug 40 is replaced by a solid threaded part. The injection pipe 15 for the aforementioned liquid is associated with the enclosure 12 for the introduction under pressure, into the casing 1 and the flow tube 4, of the liquid through the conduit 13 ending in the annular space 7 and the opening 14 of the tubing 4.
Control means, such as a pressure gauge not shown, are associated with the tube 15 to control the state of the liquid plug formed in the casing 1 and flow tube 4 by the injection of the aforementioned liquid. The equipment includes material for stripping the production casing 1 above the crushing zone 8 and for sealing this casing 1 and the flow tube 4 in their bare zone, as well as for clearing portions of tubes and casings comprising the conduits 13 and opening 14 to be eliminated before the installation of the well production head.
The above-mentioned equipment advantageously comprises, as shown in FIG. 14 and to constitute the shutter, a sealed chamber 18 covering the sealed enclosures 9 ′ and 12 as well as the stripped and closed area 44 of the production casing 1 and the tube flow 4. This chamber 18 consists of
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
two shells 45 and 45 'assembled at the lower flanges 32 of the elements 29, opposite the rings 35', to form the hemispherical bottom of the chamber, of at least one tubular element 46 bolted to the shells 45 and 45 ′ and by a cover 47 in which the aforementioned access valve 19 is arranged, allowing personnel to enter the chamber.
The above-mentioned equipment finally comprises lifting means, not shown, arranged inside the chamber 18, for lifting and holding the tubing 4 relative to the casings 2 ', 1 and for clearing the portions of tube and casing to eliminate. The chamber 18 further comprises a drain pipe 48, controlled by a valve 50 located outside the chamber, intended to evacuate the above-mentioned oil, gas or liquid which would spread into said chamber. The chamber comprises the tubing 49, controlled by the external valve 51, which is intended to be connected to the tubing 4 for the purpose described above.
The tubing 41, presented by the chamber 18 and connected to the aforementioned tubing, is mounted on this chamber 18 so as to be able either to inject liquid into the enclosure 12, or, when the latter is dismantled and as long as the tubing 49 has not been connected to the tubing 4, inject liquid into the chamber so that it then spreads into the tubing 4 and into the abovementioned annular space 7.
It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described and that many modifications can be made to these without departing from the scope of this patent.
One could in particular provide, as shown in dashed lines in FIG. 4, two sealed enclosures 12 and 12 ′ arranged opposite one another on the elements 29 ′, the drilling means 38 ′ associated with the enclosure 12, producing a conduit 19 ′ in the production tubing 1. The aforementioned conduits 19 and orifice 14 receive a tubing 52 which forces the aforementioned liquid injected through the enclosure 12 to flow directly into the tubing 4 and which avoids the short- circuit
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
hydraulic between the two enclosures 12 and 12 ′ by the annular space 7 or by the space 34 ′, the sealed enclosure 12 ′ being intended to collect the oil or the gas replaced by the liquid injected from the sealed enclosure 12.
One could also so that the weight of the chamber 18 and of the loads which it carries is not supported by the fixing of the half-shells 45, 451 of the latter to the elements 29 and to the tube 2 ′, plan to support the chamber 18 by supports 18'reposant on concrete bases made on the ground (see Figure 7).
