<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

HANDLING AND PROCESSING OF PLASTIC BOTTLES
The present invention relates to an integrated process for producing, handling and filling plastic bottles with carbonated drinks.
The equipment used to fill and label plastic bottles with carbonated drinks can operate at a high flow rate. It is therefore essential, for efficient production, that empty plastic bottles be brought to this apparatus as required. If blow molding techniques are used, it is possible to produce plastic bottles at relatively high speeds. However, there is a difficulty in obtaining that the bottles are supplied by the blow molding machines to the bottling and labeling machines according to their needs.
This is particularly the case with small bottles such as those with a capacity of 250 ml which, because of their small dimensions, are difficult to handle since they have an inherent instability when they are empty.
The invention therefore aims to provide an improved process for producing, handling and filling these relatively low capacity plastic bottles.
According to the present invention, it is
EMI1.1
provided a process for producing, handling and filling provided for a process
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
plastic bottles with carbonated drinks, said method comprising the following steps: injection molding a plastic bottle blank, conditioning the blank at a desired temperature, blow molding the blank to form a shaped plastic bottle desired, bring the molded bottles on a conveyor having a flat surface intended to receive the base of the bottles, pull the base of the bottles on the flat surface to maintain them in a desired vertical position on the conveyor, fill the bottles with a carbonated drink, close the bottles with a screw cap, label the bottles,
and pack the bottles in groups on a tray and palletize the trays.
In one embodiment of the invention, the base of the bottles is drawn against the flat surface of the conveyor by a vacuum of air applied between the flat surface of the conveyor and the base of the bottle.
In a preferred arrangement, the conveyor comprises an essentially flat conveyor belt having several holes spaced from each other through
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
which the air is sucked in order to attract the base of the bottles against the conveyor belt.
The conveyor is preferably an endless belt conveyor having several air passage holes spaced from each other and arranged along the length of this belt.
More preferably, there are at least two rows of air holes which are spaced transversely on the conveyor belt.
In a preferred arrangement, the conveyor belt passes over an elongated sheath having an upper inlet through which air is drawn in and an outlet for air drawn in through the suction holes of the conveyor belt and through the sheath.
In one embodiment of the invention, the prepared plastic bottles are first brought to a silo sized so as to contain a large number of empty bottles, in order to ensure a continuous supply of the empty plastic bottles according to the needs. The plastic bottles are preferably brought from the transporter to an intermediate hopper and are then sent to the silo by another transporter.
In a particularly preferred arrangement, the bottles leaving the silo are rearranged and oriented with a desired vertical arrangement, for filling and labeling.
The plastic bottle preferably has a capacity of between 100 ml and 500 ml, and more preferably about 250 ml. The bottles can be made of any suitable plastic, but it is preferred to use polyethylene terephthalate.
The invention also makes it possible to obtain plastic bottles produced by a process.

claimed by any preceding claim.
The invention will be better understood on examining the description below, given solely by way of example and with reference to the appended figures which are respectively:
FIG. 1, a block diagram representing the process of the invention,
FIGS. 2 (a) and 2 (b), perspective views respectively of a blank and of a plastic bottle used for the process of the present invention,
FIG. 3, a plan view of a detail of the process,
FIG. 4, a side elevation view of part of the process,
1 FIG. 5, a side view, partially in cross section, of a conveyor used for part of the process,
FIG. 6, a plan view of the conveyor of FIG. 5,
FIG. 7, an end view of the conveyor of FIG. 5,
FIG. 8, a plan view of another part of the process,
Figure 9,
a perspective view of a silo used for the process, and
Figure 10, an end view of the silo of Figure 9.
If we examine the figures, we can see there a process of production, handling and filling of plastic bottles with carbonated drinks.
The process, represented schematically in FIG. 1, comprises a first step 1 for injection molding of a plastic bottle blank 20, as indicated in FIG. 2 (a), the packaging of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the blank in step 2 at a desired temperature and the blow molding of the blank in step 3 to obtain a plastic bottle 25 of the desired shape, as shown in Figure 2 (b). The bottle 25 preferably has a relatively reduced capacity, usually between 100 ml and 500 ml, and more preferably approximately 250 ml or 330 ml.
The bottle is made of any suitable plastic material such as PVC, polypropylene, polyethylene or, preferably however, polyethylene terephthalate. The bottle 25 may include an inverted dome-shaped base generally called a "champagne" -shaped base or a crenellated base comprising a certain number of projecting feet.
The plastic bottles 25 are brought to a conveyor 26 on which, as will be described in more detail below, the bottles are held in the desired vertical position. In this case, the bottles are then sent to an intermediate hopper 27 and then transported by a conveyor 28 to a silo 29 of large capacity.
As required, the bottles 25 are taken from the silo 29 on a conveyor 30 leading to a unit 31 for ordering, from where the bottles are brought to a filling station 35 for filling with a carbonated drink. The bottles are then closed by a screw-on lid, they are labeled at a labeling station 36, they are packaged in groups on trays at a packaging station 37 and the trays are finally palletized in the palletizing step 38 .
If, for more details, we examine Figures 3 to 7 we see that the blanks 20 are molded to obtain bottles 25 in a blow molding machine having a turntable 40 with four heads 41 each having a capacity of approximately seven bottles
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
and supplying the bottles for the different forming steps when the plate 40 rotates. When the bottles have been formed, the head 41 is aligned above the conveyor 26.
The conveyor 26 comprises an essentially flat endless belt 50 passing over wheels 51 which include tensioning wheels 52. The endless belt 50 comprises, as shown more particularly in FIG. 6, several holes 55 spaced apart from each other through which air is drawn in by a vacuum unit (not shown). The endless belt 50 passes over an elongated sheath 60 having an upper inlet through which the air from the holes 55 in the endless belt 50 is drawn in and a side outlet 61 through which the air is drawn into the unit vacuum through the hoses 62.
The vacuum is applied continuously to the sheath 60, and therefore to the endless conveyor 50, so that when the plastic bottles 25 are removed from the molding machine they are brought into their vertical arrangement on the conveyor belt 26 where they are retained in the desired vertical position under the effect of vacuum. This is essential so that the plastic bottles are removed from the blow molding machine as quickly and efficiently as possible.
If a conventional vacuumless type conveyor is used, there is a significant risk of bottles overturning because of the small size and lightness thereof, this phenomenon being able to cause a chain reaction along the conveyor and, which is even more serious, which can give rise to obstructions of the molding machine with consequently a shutdown and a loss of production.
The molded bottles are then brought 1 to the intermediate hopper 27 which can be used as
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
feeding point of the molded bottles to the processing system if there are difficulties in the molding apparatus. At the outlet of the hopper
EMI7.1
e intermediary 25, the bottles are brought by the transporter 28 into a very large capacity silo 29 sized to contain the production needs of several days. From the silo 29, the bottles are brought by means of a vibrator 70 to the conveyor 30 which brings them to an ordering unit 31, from where the bottles 25 are sent with the desired orientation for filling at filling step 35 where they are filled with carbonated drink.
The filled bottles are then sent to the labeling 36, to the packaging 37 and finally to the palletizing station 38.
The particular arrangement for handling plastic bottles described above is especially advantageous in that it allows an appropriate supply of the plastic bottles available according to the needs for filling and the subsequent stages of the process. As already mentioned, the filling and the subsequent stages can be carried out very quickly and the handling installation offers a provision which allows the molding of the bottles to take place almost continuously in order to supply the desired quantity of bottles, while the installations filling, labeling and packaging can work for shorter periods of time.
For example, the bottle molding and handling arrangement can operate almost continuously on a three-shift scheme while filling and subsequent processing steps can take place by working with a single shift to ensure efficiency. maximum processing and minimum costs.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Many variants of the particular embodiments of the invention can be easily designed and the invention is therefore not limited to the embodiments described above but can undergo modifications of construction and detail.
