<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Method for dissolving a Ras in a volume of liquid and device used therewith"
The invention relates to a method for dissolving a gas in a volume of liquid, according to which the gas is added at least at one place in the volume of liquid, in particular at the bottom of this volume.
A problem posed by such well known methods is that the majority of the gas added at the bottom bubbles through the liquid according to preferred flows and escapes from the liquid at the top. Only a small portion of the added gas will be absorbed by the liquid. The efficiency of such a well-known method is therefore small.
It will be clear that a low efficiency greatly increases the cost of dissolving the gas, especially when more expensive gases are used, such as pure oxygen.
The foregoing problem arises, for example, in the aeration of polluted water in water purification plants and in all kinds of aerobic microbial growth processes in a liquid medium, such as, for example, in the yeast propagation during brewing of beer.
An object of the invention therefore consists in realizing a method for dissolving a gas in a volume of liquid which offers a solution to this important problem.
For this purpose, in the method according to the invention, at least in a first liquid zone which is located substantially above said place in the volume of liquid, a liquid flow with a downwardly directed component is created and in a second liquid zone, which is substantially between named
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
location and said first fluid zone creates a turbulence.
The rate of rise of the bubbling gas, which is relatively high in the known processes known in the art, is hereby reduced and in some cases even reduced to zero. The gas thus remains in contact with the liquid for much longer and is thus absorbed by this liquid with a greater efficiency. The fact that the amount of liquid that has not yet absorbed as much gas continuously offers in the first zone due to the created liquid flow also contributes to an increase in efficiency.
Furthermore, the second liquid zone or turbulence zone is also important for a high efficiency, since in this zone the added gas is spread over a larger area in the form of gas bubbles.
The invention furthermore relates to a device for dissolving a gas in a liquid, wherein said device contains a gas supply for adding the gas, which gas supply is intended to flow into the volume of liquid, in particular at the bottom of this volume of liquid , to be opened, characterized in that said device comprises an agitator provided with at least one drivable screw rotatable about an axis, said agitator provided for a flow of liquid at least in a first liquid zone situated above the mouth of said gas supply with a downward-facing component and to create turbulence in a second fluid zone substantially between said mouth and said first fluid zone.
In a special embodiment of the device according to the invention, said screw is intended to be arranged eccentrically in said volume.
Further details and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a method for dissolving a gas in a volume of liquid and of a device according to the invention used therewith; this description is given by way of example only and does not limit the invention; the reference numbers refer to the only figure which is a front view
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
with partial section of a device according to the invention.
In general, according to a method for dissolving a gas in a volume of liquid, the gas is added at least in one place, preferably at the bottom of the volume of liquid. In order to prevent this gas from escaping from the liquid too quickly, according to the invention, at least in a first liquid zone, which is substantially above the place where the gas is added, a flow of liquid with a downwardly directed component is created whereby the ascending of the gas in the liquid is slowed or preferably even prevented. For this it is recommended to set the downward flow velocity between 5 and 9 meters per second.
According to the invention, turbulence is also created in a second liquid zone. This second liquid zone or turbulence zone is located substantially between the first liquid zone with downward liquid flow and the place where the gas is added. In this turbulence zone, the gas is distributed in the form of small air bubbles. For example, the gas is injected upward into the liquid at this location, against the downward liquid flow.
Due to the combination of the downward liquid flow and the turbulence zone located below it, the gas is dissolved in the liquid with great efficiency. In such a way, high gas concentrations in the liquid can also be obtained.
It will be clear that the method according to the invention has multiple fields of application, including water purification and microbial production processes. A device suitable for realizing the method according to the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying figure.
This figure shows an apparatus for dissolving a gas 1 in a volume of liquid 2, in particular for dissolving sterile air or oxygen in a sterilized wort fermentation tank. In the brewing process it is indeed necessary that the sterilized and partly vented wort is aerated again in order to start the yeast propagation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The fermentation tank shown in the figure mainly consists of a container 3, an agitator 4 arranged therein and a gas supply 5 which opens into the bottom of the container 3.
The container 3 is formed by a cylindrical, upright wall 6 which is closed at the top by a lid 7 and at the bottom by a conical bottom 8 which forms an angle of approximately 120 in cross section. The ratio between the height H of the cylindrical wall 6 and its diameter D is preferably between 1 and 1.5.
The agitator 4 consists of an upright shaft 9 which is driven at its upper end via a transmission 10 by a motor 11 and which is provided at the bottom with a screw 12. The length of the shaft is hereby chosen such that the screw 12 is practically height of the transition between the conical bottom 8 and the cylindrical wall 6 in the holder 3. It is important that the agitator 4 is arranged eccentrically in the holder 3. At the location of this screw 12, the shaft 9 is at a distance A from the cylindrical wall 6, which is preferably substantially equal to one third of the diameter D of the holder 3.
The diameter of the screw 12, which in the case of the figure is provided with two diametrically opposed screw blades 13, is preferably also approximately one third of the diameter D of the holder 3.
The gas supply 5 ends almost vertically under the shaft 9 of the screw 12 in the bottom 8 of the holder 3 and is directed towards this shaft 9.
The motor 11 and the transmission 10 are arranged to rotate the screw 12 at a speed of preferably 300 to 400 revolutions per minute, such that a liquid flow 14 is created in the liquid 2. In this way, according to the invention, it is possible to saturate the liquid volume with gas almost completely. More specifically, the liquid 2 is pushed down in the vicinity of the screw 12 at a speed of preferably 5 to 9 meters per second. This creates a liquid circulation 14 in the volume of liquid 2, seen in longitudinal section, next to the axis
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
9 of the screw 12 creates a downward flow of liquid 14 which deflects at the bottom towards the side walls of the container 3 and returns upward along the side walls.
It is also important that a turbulence zone 15 is created under the screw 12 in which all kinds of swirls of the liquid 2 occur.
The gas 1, which is injected upwardly into this turbulence zone 15 via the gas supply 5, is spread virtually throughout the turbulence zone 15 by these vortices in the form of gas bubbles. The downward flow of liquid 14 along the shaft 9 prevents these gas bubbles from rising up in the liquid. In this way, according to the invention, it is possible to saturate the liquid volume with gas almost completely. Moreover, this absorption of the gas occurs relatively quickly, which means a higher efficiency of the installation.
It will be clear that all kinds of modifications can be made to the above-described method and device according to the invention without departing from the scope of this invention.
In particular, the container can have all kinds of shapes. Preferably, however, the container is formed by a body of rotation such that virtually no dead zones are formed against the side walls of the container without liquid flow.
