Borstelwals
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
In fig.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Brush roller
The invention relates to a brush roller in vacuum cleaners or brush attachments, which are fixed or adjustable in height transversely to the working direction and which can be driven by means of an electric motor or turbine via a flat or toothed belt.
Brush vacuum cleaners or brush attachments for connection to hand or floor vacuum cleaners equipped with brush rollers are driven by an electric motor or turbines, which are loaded by the suction flow.
In most cases the torque is transferred from the drive disc, for example a toothed pinion from the motor to the brush roller by means of flat or toothed belts.
It has been found in practice that the flat or toothed belt space, in particular in the working area of the brush roller, is very dirty, clogged by fluff and thereby leads to blocking of the brush roller.
Attempts to protect the belt space by narrowing the belt passages, by means of scrapers or by providing countercurrent openings are not satisfactory. Timing belt drives in particular are very vulnerable, since the teeth of the belts grip the dirt and transport it further.
To overcome this drawback, therefore, cleaning valves were provided in the belt zone through which the contaminants can be removed. However, this measure is complicated for the user, causes additional pollution and, moreover, is constructional and expensive from the point of view of manufacture.
Devices are also known in which the belt space is enclosed. The drawback of this embodiment is that the space required for the enclosure hinders the free air flow and deteriorates extraction from edge and corner zones.
A further drawback occurs with those devices in which the brush roller is alloyed in height adjustable or pivotable. The height adjustability is required to adapt the brush roller to the carpet pile or, if necessary, to adjust the brush roller due to brush wear.
The invention is based on the problem of a problem
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to provide an adjusting roller of the said type, the belt space being clean, d. w. z. is kept free from contamination without affecting a height adjustment of the brush roller.
This problem is solved according to the invention in that the flat or toothed belt for dirt exclusion is surrounded by a protective case, on the one hand it is pivotally mounted on the drive shaft of the electric motor or turbine and surrounds the belt completely, or in the drive or . The turbine housing is pivotally mounted, the housing forming one part of the cover, and the protective housing completely covering the belt running outside the housing and, on the other hand, being mounted on the brush roller in the region of the tooth or planar pulley.
Advantageous further embodiments of the invention are set out in claims 2-5.
To clarify the invention, an embodiment of the brush roller will be described with reference to the drawing.
Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view of a protective case mounted on the drive shaft of the motor for driving a brush roller along the line I-I in FIG. 2; Fig. 2 is a top view of the protective box with the top removed; FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a housing mounted belt drive protective case on line III-III in FIG. 4; and FIG. 4 is a top plan view of the protective case of FIG. 3 with the top removed.
Fig. 1 shows the protective box 2 arranged around the drive 1, which consists of an upper part 3 and a lower part 4, the interface 5 extending through the center 6 of the motor drive shaft 7 and the center 8 of the brush roller 9, respectively. On the motor shaft 7, the pinion or disc 10 is provided, which is a tooth or surface belt 11 of the brush roller. 9 drives. When the shaft distance between the drive shaft and brush roller 9 is large, a supporting disc 13 rotatably mounted on a shaft 12 is arranged between the leading and descending belt parts, the center of

the shaft 12 rests on the interface 5 and the cross-section of the support disc 13 is chosen such that the belt 11 lies slightly tensioned on this disc. The distance x between the support disc 13 and the brush roller 9 must be as small as possible.
The alloy of the protective box 2 is effected by the flange 14 on the top and bottom parts 3, 4 and there also forms the pivot point for pivoting the entire protective box 2 at a height adjustment of the brush roller 9.
The tooth resp. flat pulley 15 fixed. In order to prevent the ingress of dirt into the inner space of the protective box 2, a circumferential sealing plate 16 is formed on either side of the pulley 15 on the brush roller 9, around which the brush roller alloy 17 of the protective box 2 extends in a labyrinth shape.
When recording, respectively. moving the brush roller 9 downwards about the pivot point formed by the center 6 of the drive shaft 7, the support disc 13 centers the entire protective box 2 by the belt parts lying thereon.
Figures 3 and 4 show a variant of a protective box 18, which also consists of an upper part 19 and a lower part 20. Around the toothed or flat belt 11 of the drive 1, this box only engages in the zone in which the belt extends outside the drive resp. turbine housing 21 expires. The alloy of the protective case 18 is effected by means of taps 22 formed thereon in receiving means 23 in the drive housing 21, the receiving means 23 on the connecting line 24 of the center 6 of the motor resp. drive shaft 7 and the center 8 of the brush roller 9.
The interface 25 between the upper part 19 and the lower part 20 also extends along this connecting line 24. The drive resp. turbine housing 21 is guided in the region of the receiving means 23 by means of ribs 26 along the protective case 18, in order thereby to achieve a seal between the protective case and the drive housing 21. The open ends of the guard box 18 each have an upstream flow 27 at the top and bottom 19, 20 which prevents the belt 11 from pivoting the guard box 18

is damaged. The support box 18 on the brush roller 9 is supported on a running surface 28 of the brush roller 9 to the left and right of the tooth and / or tooth. flat pulley 15, which additionally comprises the protective box 18 in a labyrinth shape.
