EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

EMI1.1
Overheating protection device.
The present invention relates to a device for protection against overheating for an electrical device with three-phase cable, in particular for a cabal winder, comprising a switching device having a relay controlled by a thermal circuit breaker ensuring the breaking of the current in the assembly. phase conductors in the event of overheating.
For safety reasons, in such protection devices for three-phase cables, it is necessary to simultaneously deactivate all of the phase conductors in the event of overheating, for example. Such overheating may be due to too high a current for example and appear in particular in the case of a cable reel in the presence of a high current density when part of the cable is not unwound from the reel.
In order to effect switching off in the event of overheating, there is generally provided a thermal circuit breaker serving to actuate a relay with three contact segments, which are mounted in the three phase conductors. At a determined temperature, the circuit breaker opens and interrupts the current supply to the relay winding, so that the latter triggers and causes the opening of all three contact segments provided in the three conductors phase.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In many electrical devices, especially in cable reels, it is often very difficult to mount a relay with three contact segments, which is not only very bulky but also very expensive.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device for protection against overheating of the kind mentioned at the start, which can be manufactured at lower cost and more compactly than devices of traditional structure.
To this end, the invention provides that the thermal circuit breaker is mounted in a first phase conductor and that the relay has two contact segments only, which are mounted in the other two phase conductors.
As a result, the relay with three contact segments used in known manner can be replaced by a relay with two contact segments, which is of substantially more compact structure and can be produced cheaply. In addition to these advantages, the device according to the invention entails no additional cost in additional parts or components and all the three phase conductors are interrupted simultaneously in the event of overheating.
Installation without the slightest problem is therefore possible especially in the case of cable reels inside which the space available is particularly limited.
Unlike traditional structure devices, at least one phase conductor is interrupted by the thermal circuit breaker in the event of a relay failure.
Advantageous developments and improvements of the overheating protection device specified in claim 1 are possible thanks to the features provided in the claims.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
A particularly simple mounting structure is characterized in that a relay winding is mounted between a neutral conductor and the section of the first phase conductor which can be interrupted by the thermal circuit breaker.
When the thermal circuit breaker has a self-maintenance circuit, which keeps the circuit breaker open during a power cut by a thermal element due to overheating, the relay winding is then usefully shunted by a capacitor, in order to maintain continuity of current in the self-maintenance circuit. Sufficient current continuity is not always guaranteed by the winding of the relay.
A particular structure of the thermal circuit breaker allows it to be used also as a current limiting device, in which there is provided a switching element which is heated by the conduction of the current.
An embodiment of the device according to the invention is shown in the single figure and is explained in detail in the following description.
A three-phase cable consists of three phase conductors R, S and T, a neutral conductor N and a ground conductor E. The three-phase cable therefore generally consists of five conductors.
The overheating protection device shown in the single figure is mounted in or on an electrical device to be monitored, for example a cable reel. For the sake of simplification, the electrical device is not shown in the drawing since the mounting location of the overheating protection device depends on various constructive realities which are often very variable.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
As illustrated, a thermal circuit breaker 10 is mounted in the first phase conductor R. In the simplest case, such a circuit breaker 10 has a bimetallic strip opening a switching contact in the presence of overheating and interrupting said phase conductor R.
Thereafter, the circuit breaker 10 can be closed after cooling either automatically or manually b using a reset device. Such circuit breakers are known and described for example in DE-OS 28 32 745 or in US-PS 4 048 611. A circuit breaker of this kind, having a self-maintenance circuit bypassing the contact segments is also known according to EP- OS 182 940. When the circuit breaker is open, a current flows through a thermal element provided in the self-maintenance circuit so as to keep the circuit breaker open. After the power interruption, the circuit breaker is closed again automatically. This thermal circuit breaker can of course be entirely electronic and consist essentially of a semiconductor circuit breaker controlled by a thermocouple.
The thermocouple can also be mounted elsewhere in the electrical device.
The section of the first phase conductor R which can be interrupted by the thermal circuit breaker 10 is connected to the neutral conductor N via the winding 11 of an electrical relay 12. The winding 11 of the relay 12 is shunted by a capacitor 13.
Relay 12 has two interconnected contact segments 14,15 which are mounted in the other two phase conductors S and T.
Under normal operating conditions, the circuit breaker 10 is closed. When a three-phase current voltage is sent to the cable, a current flows through the phase conductor R and passes over the neutral conductor N via the circuit breaker 10 and the winding 11 of the relay 12, so that the two
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
contact segments 14, 15 are closed. An electrical device can thus be supplied with current via the cable outlet symbolized by the arrows.
When 1 a temperature within the circuit breaker 10 or to separately mounted temperature probes exceeds a predefined value intended to prevent overheating, the circuit breaker 10 opens and interrupts the current supply in the first phase conductor R, so that the relay 12 trips and opens the contact segments 14, 15. The three phase conductors R, 5 and T are therefore interrupted.
When the thermal circuit breaker 10 is provided with a self-maintenance circuit, it is not possible to maintain the necessary maintenance current, due to the high impedance of the winding 11 of the relay 12. For this purpose, the capacitor 13 mounted in parallel nevertheless makes it possible to supply a sufficient current. Of course, when the circuit breaker 10 is not provided with a self-maintenance circuit, the capacitor 13 is no longer essential.
The assembly described above is also characterized in that it can also serve as a current limiter within an electrical device, when the thermal circuit breaker is designed so as to open when a determined temperature is reached in the presence of a determined current In this case, it may be a resistance for example.
