<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
As et 500 kJ/n.
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

The invention relates to a device for protection against overvoltages.
EMI2.1
overvoltage conforming to 1. Such a surge protection device is already described with its preferred embodiment in German patent 27 18 188. The advantage thus obtained lies in that only the varistor comes into play as a first step in protection in the event of the appearance of low overvoltages and, consequently, of low-intensity drift currents.
In such cases, the overvoltage appearing thereon is not large enough to cause the spark gap and, in particular, the spark gap air gap provided in the example to operate. of execution. It is only in the event of greater stresses that the spark gap comes into play as an additional protection step and therefore as protection against overloads on the varistor. Such an arrangement allows the spark gap to always limit the voltage at the point of use and at the varistor to a practically constant value. However, spark gaps other than the air gap and slide spark gap can be provided, for example gas discharge current bypass devices, provided that these resist the passage of a current having l intensity required.
Such a surge protection device can be used in general, but its preferred field of application is however that of areas where direct lightning strikes are to be expected. Such overvoltage protection devices can be installed, for example in buildings where direct lightning strikes on electrical installations are to be feared.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
We cannot however rule out the case where the varistor, for example following too frequent stresses, would undergo a modification of its intensity-voltage characteristic as a result of prolonged residual currents caused by lightning strikes (what is called flash tails), that is to say that its resistance would decrease and that it would allow the passage of an unacceptable leakage current under normal operating voltage. Such a current not only costs money, but can also cause an inadmissible rise in ground potential and, in some cases, excessive heating of the varistor and, therefore, of the device. In some cases, the varistor can thus be completely destroyed.
In particular, such a change in the characteristic of the varistor also involves the risk that a sufficiently high voltage drop does not arise at the varistor when a current pulse is to be derived therefrom, and therefore that the required starting voltage is not obtained in the spark gap which then becomes incapable of fulfilling its bypass function.
The two German utility models 75 01 349 and 81 05 608 include stop and bypass devices with the series connection of a spark gap, a variable resistor (varistor) and a fuse. In the event of excessive heating, the safety fuse (point soldered to the tin) is blown. In this way, the entire stop and bypass device is separated from the network, that is to say it becomes inactive in its entirety.
By comparison with the prior art, set out above, the object of the invention is to improve a surge protection device, in accordance with the introductory part of claim 1, so that damage to the varistor (modification of the intensity-voltage characteristic of the varistor) caused by too frequent stress by current pulses and, in particular, by currents due to lightning or the like, as well as the large leakage current which result, cannot harm the operation of the spark gap and that the operation of the overvoltage protection device remains ensured as a whole.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
To achieve this objective, use is made first of all of the features of claim 1 combined with the introductory part. of claim 1. In this way, the passage of a leakage current of an unacceptable intensity is eliminated and above all the risk that the spark gap is no longer subjected to a sufficient ignition voltage. Compared with the arrangements already described and in accordance with the German utility models 75 01 349 and 81 05 608, there is the advantage that it is not the entire overvoltage protection device, but only the connection containing the varistor of the parallel circuit which is interrupted and therefore rendered ineffective.
The spark gap can therefore, as before, protect the installations connected downstream. The spark gap itself reacts so slowly to current, that it can also divert and interrupt currents at the network frequency (residual currents), that is to say that the device is independent, during each phase of its operation, protection of the existing conductor possibly.
This result is obtained, for example, by using a spark gap made up of two electrodes with an insulating intermediate layer, this insulating layer being produced by means of a material which, in the event of heating by the arcs of passage, gives off an exerting gas. pressure towards the outside, that is to say having a blowing and cooling effect and therefore extinction, so that the residual current at the frequency of the network can be interrupted (DE-PS 29 34 238) . The use of the spark gap which has just been described is particularly recommended with low voltage installations.
Instead of the abovementioned insulating materials and, in particular, materials releasing hydrogen gas (POM, Teflon = registered trademark, etc.), it is also possible to use mica insulating material, the effectiveness of which is however less.
A preferred and easy to carry out embodiment of the invention is described in claim 2, which is supplemented by the features of claim 3. Such fusible solder points are known per se (see the two utility models mentioned above), but not however with an arrangement comprising a parallel circuit there with varistor and spark gap.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In accordance with claim 4, it is also possible to provide a device for controlling and triggering the electrical circuit for the branch of the circuit containing the varistor.
The features mentioned in claim 5 ensure that the triggering of the varistor is signaled to the operator responsible for the installation. The features of claim 6 are intended to allow the control of the operating efficiency of a signaling device according to claim 5.
Claim 7 describes a particularly advantageous embodiment of a device for protection against overvoltages, according to the invention.
Other advantages and characteristics of the invention are described in the following subsidiary claims, as well as in the appended description and in the corresponding drawings of exemplary embodiments in accordance with the invention. These drawings represent respectively:

The principle connection according to FIG. 1 comprises, between phase L or 1 conducting the voltage of the network and of the earth or of the bar 2 of potential compensation, the parallel connection of a spark gap and, in particular, of an air gap and slip spark gap (see above) 3, on the one hand, and a series circuit comprising a varistor 4 with a triggering and control device consisting of a welding point 5 , on the other hand. In addition, and in parallel with this assembly, a signaling device 6 is provided with control or verification keys 7.
FIG. 2 represents a corresponding three-pole execution with the conductive phases LI, L2 and L3 or 1 of the network, of the earth conductor 2 or of the equalization bar of the PAS potential and the neutral conductor N or 8. The housing of the protection against overvoltage is represented by the dotted line 9. The conductor 10 between the equalization bar of the PAS potentials as well as the earth conductor 2, on the one hand, and the neutral conductor 8, on the other hand, is provided only of a spark gap 3, but not of the parallel branch made up of the varistor 4 and of the tripping and control device 5. It is possible to provide prior fuses 11, which are however not essential when using spark gaps in accordance with patent 29 34 238 (see above).
As an example of the invention, but without limitation thereof, the following electrical characteristics may be mentioned, in the case of use of the following spark gaps, patent 29 34 238:
Network voltage: 220-380 V
Prior fuse II: for example 50 A
Parallel circuit with varistor and control device: designed for 8/20 current pulses of 5 kA and therefore 0.1 As and 500 J / n.
Slide gap and air gap: designed for 100 kA current pulses with approximately 10
As and 500 kJ / n.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
FIG. 3 represents the diagram of the intensity (I) -tension (U) characteristic of a varistor. The normal and desirable characteristic is designated by 12, while lines 13 and 14 represent the characteristics of a damaged varistor which allows the passage of currents of too high intensity, even under fairly low voltages. In such a case, the control device 5 puts the damaged varistor 4 off. This result can be obtained thermally by means of a fuse which melts for a given heating of the varistor (see for example Figure 4 and the following figures). It can also be an electrically operated fuse or an automatic fuse (not shown), arranged so that the varistor leakage current is interrupted in the milliamp area.
By switching off the varistor only, the protection function of the device remains ensured by means of the spark gap.
To ensure that the varistor is switched off, it is possible to provide a signaling device (optical or acoustic) which is represented diagrammatically by 6 in the example of FIG. 1 and which indicates, in the event of opening, the setting off the varistor 4 by the triggering device 5 in the parallel circuit comprising the elements 4 and 5. The suitability for operation of this signaling device can be checked by means of a control key 7. Control devices and monitoring of this kind can obviously also be included in the three-pole connection according to Figure 2, but they have not been shown in the drawing of Figure 2 for the sake of simplification. In this regard, reference should be made to Figure 4 and the following figures.
The exemplary embodiment of FIGS. 4-7 represents a constructive embodiment in accordance with the invention with a housing or a support frame 15 made of insulating material, 3 conductive bars the which connect the connection terminals in the form of a stirrup 16 ′ for conductors LI, L2, L3 or 1 to the fixing screws of 16 for connection with spark gaps 17-19. In addition, a fourth conductor bar 8 ′ is provided between a stirrup-shaped connection terminal 16 ′ for the neutral conductor 8 and a fixing screw 16, as well as a connection 20 for the earth conductor 2 with PAS . The 8 'busbar
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
is therefore not normally energized.
The busbars 1 and 8 'are each designed to be stressed linearly by the currents which appear and are constituted, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, of conductors capable of transporting the lightning currents and therefore having an appropriate section , as well as fixing screws and fittings 16, 16 ′ having the required robustness. The busbars, the connection terminals and the fixing screws are made so as to be able to withstand the electrodynamic stresses resulting from the passage of a current, and in particular of a lightning current of for example 500 KJIJ.
Under the fixing screws 16 are the spark gaps of the preferred type capable of transporting the lightning current with an electrode 17, an insulating piece 18 and a common grounding plate 19. The insulating piece 18 is then provided with a annular fixing 18 ′, which isolates each electrode 17 from the earthing plate 19. The arcs resulting from the discharge are characterized by the number 18 "(see FIG. 7). The fixing screw 16 passes through the insulating piece 18 and is screwed into the support frame 15 of insulating material, so that no arc can spring between the fixing screw 16 towards the earthing plate 19.
The potential equalization bar or the earth conductor 2 is connected to terminal 20 which is also in the form of a stirrup.
Between the busbars 1 and the grounding plate 19, there is each time a parallel circuit consisting of a varistor 4 and a tripping and control device 5, 6 and 7 where the elements 4, 5 are located near the bars

conductive 1 '. Varistors 4 are located next to each other to save space. The welded point (indicated by 5) electrically connects the varistor contact 25 and the conductive element 21 by means of a spring 22. The spring 22 is connected at 23 to the corresponding conductive bar l ', while 24 represents a fixing additional insulating mechanics of the conductors 1 '.
If an excessively strong leakage current appears on paths 23,22, 5,21, 25 and 4 to 19, the point
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
solder 5 bottom and the spring 22 moves with its own tension in the direction of arrow 22 ', until it presses the contact 26. The melting temperature of the solder in question can be for example 150oC. The contact element 26 is also arranged in accordance with the principle connection of FIG. 1. The cut-off of this varistor 4 to 5 by 6 is shown there. The verification device 7 is visible in Figures 5,6.
Its pin 7 'allows to check the network voltage, brought by the spring 22 and the connection 23 to the element 21, which exists in contact with the varistor 25 in the non-triggered position, according to FIG. 5, while, when the connection soldered 5 is broken, this tension is cut by spring 22.
The device according to FIGS. 4 to 7 can be designed in a very compact manner by placing the varistors 4 in the form of a plate parallel to the conductive bars 1 ′. In this way,
EMI9.1
the two upper varistors 4 corresponding to the conductors LI, L2 can be located immediately one next to the other and be connected with the grounding bars 19 via a common earth contact 4 '.
