<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

AB = BC = a.
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Method for measuring the straightness of an elongated rolled product in motion.
The present invention relates to a method for measuring the straightness of an elongated lamme product in motion.
By product Elongated lamina, iL means a product whose transverse dimensions are small compared to the longitudinal dimension, such as a sheet of any thickness or a section of any section, in particular a rail. In fact, the method of the invention applies to any rolled product whose horizontal projection has at least one longitudinal edge.
EMI1.1
In the description which follows, special reference will be made to a strong sheet, that is to say a sheet whose thickness is between 2.5 mm and 30 mm approximately. It goes without saying, however, that this reference has no other purpose than to illustrate concretely the object of the invention, without this resulting in the slightest limitation thereof with respect to the laminated products defined more high.
In general, the process for manufacturing a strong sheet of imposed dimensions includes the hot rolling of a slab into a long strip, called the parent sheet, which has the desired thickness. This parent sheet is cut into intermediate sheets having a length as large as possible while remaining compatible with the installations located downstream of the rolling mill.
These intermediate sheets are in turn cut into customer sheets, so called because they have the dimensions set by the user.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It is well known, however, that a Laminated product, in particular a
EMI2.1
mother plate intended for the production of strong sheets, is hardly ever rectilinear, but that it presents on the contrary a curved shape in its average plane, in the manner of a saber blade. The edge of the product is itself curved; It can also happen that the curvature is reversed and that the bank then presents one or more inflection points.
Such deformation, which is sometimes referred to as "sabering", constitutes a disadvantage all the more annoying as it is different - procrr-c-h-aque product. In the particular case of strong heads, it
EMI2.2
reduced The length of the intermediate sheets that can be obtained from a parent sheet, mainly due to the extra lengths and safety widths that must be provided; this results in significant material losses.
More generally, this deformation may compromise the engagement of the product in a subsequent treatment installation, such as a heat treatment oven, a decapene or a rolling mill cage; due to the speeds currently practiced in these installations, this can result in considerable damage to the installations and significant losses of material.
The Laminator does not currently have any reliable and systematic means to detect the existence and assess the amplitude of the
EMI2.3
aforementioned deformation. He must rely on the experience and skill of the operators to try to minimize the disadvantages mentioned above.
THERE is therefore currently in the art an urgent need for a process for quickly and reliably assessing the deformation of a laminated product. This need is now met by the present invention which proposes a method for measuring the straightness of a moving product.
Before exposing the process which is the subject of the present invention, it is necessary to define what is meant by "straightness of a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
laminated product ".
The straightness of a Lamme product is a parameter allowing
EMI3.1
cier The shape of the said product in relation to a straight reference. In the general case where the edge of the rolled product has an inflection point, the straightness index S of this edge is defined by The relation:
EMI3.2
in which Y + and Y- are respectively the maximum arrows towards
EMI3.3
The interior exterior with respect to BTTa and veTstdroite HT joining the ends of the bank.
In the very frequent case where the bank has no inflection point, the straightness index is written:
EMI3.4
EMI3.5
Xa ive of length L1 is also expressed, The straightness of a portion of r; ve of Length L1 is expressed by:
EMI3.6
Finally, the straightness of the bank at any point M is defined by the relation:
EMI3.7
in LaqueLLe YM is the arrow of the shore at point M with respect to a rope of conventional length L m which underlies a portion of shore whose point M is the midpoint. It is convenient to choose a Length LM equal to 1 meter.
These definitions will be illustrated later, with reference to Figure 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
This quantity S is easily measurable when the Lamme product is immobile or animated by a synchronous translational movement during which all of its points move in an invariable direction with a speed known at all times. However, such a situation does not correspond to the conditions encountered in current industrial practice, where the product is, during its transport on a road test bench.
Leaux, animate of Light movements-uncontrolled lateral translation and rotation in its plane. These movements do not modify the general shape of the rolled product during its transport on the roller bench.
Furthermore, it can generally be considered that the width of the rolled product is sufficiently constant over the length thereof to admit that it suffices to measure the straightness of a single edge.
When this is not the case, this measurement can be supplemented by the determination of the width of the rolled product, so as to determine. ? indirectly the straightness of the second bank.
The present invention therefore proposes a method for measuring the constancy of at least one strand of an extended laminated product having at least one strand and traveling in translation, in particular on a bank of rollers. It is thus essentially a product in movement whose temperature can reach 500 degrees C. This process takes account of the parasitic movements of the product during its transport.
In accordance with the present invention, a method for measuring the constancy of at least one edge of an elongated rolled product in motion is characterized in that a first set of three equidistant reference points aligned along a line is chosen. first direction, called reference direction, substantially parallel to the longitudinal direction of said rolled product, in that at a first instant to be measured simultaneously and in a common direction, called direction of sight, the distance separating The three reference points of said first set and the first three points of said bank, called reference points, in that this measurement of distance is repeated at successive instants t1, ...

corresponding to the displacement of said lamme product by a distance equal to the spacing of two successive reference points of said first set, in that it is determined, from said measured distances, the position of said first reference points of the shore by with respect to said reference direction, in that the image of said bank or a portion thereof is drawn and in which it is deduced the straightness index of said bank or portion of bank of the laminated product.
According to the invention, the reference direction is materialized by a line parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bank of rollers-and-cons--

tituant a side edge of said bank of rollers. The reference direction is thus to move the Lamme product.
Also according to the invention, the viewing direction is substantially perpendicular to the reference direction, that is to say to the theoretical direction of displacement of the rolled product.
According to a particular implementation of the method of the invention, upper and lower values are chosen delimiting an admissible range of variation of the straightness index, the straightness index reeL of said bank is compared with said domain. variation and any crossing of at least one of said values is detected by the straightness index reeL of the bank.
Still according to the invention, the distance separating two successive reference points from said first set is advantageously between 2 m and 5 m approximately.
It has indeed appeared that this distance should not exceed 5 m, in order to provide a sufficiently high number of measurement points to be able to define the shape of the bank with good resolution. This distance cannot however be less than -2 m, because it then greatly increases the number of measurement points and it can give rise to significant errors in the trace of the image of the shore.

A particularly interesting variant of the process of the invention makes it possible to increase (at resolution and the precision of the determination of the points of said bank, while offering a wider range of measurement.

tn separated by time intervals corresponding to the displacement of said product Lamme by a distance equal to the spacing of two successive reference points of said second set, the position of said second reference points of the shore is determined from said measured distances by in relation to said reference direction, the image of said shore or of a portion thereof is plotted, said image is compared with that which results from analogous distance measurements made from said first set of reference points, cancels any deviations between the two images of the said shore or portion of the shore,
the image which results from the cancellation of said deviations is plotted and the index of straightness of said edge or portion of edge of the Lamme product is deduced therefrom.
In the context of this variant, the distance separating two successive reference points from said second set is advantageously between 5 m and 10 m.
It is also interesting, according to the present invention, to make at least one of said first reference points coincide with one of said second reference points. The common benchmark thus obtained is preferably the benchmark which is, in each case, closest to the start of said bank or section of bank, so as to
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
establish a common starting point for drawing the respective images of
Said bank or section of bank.
According to another characteristic of the invention, one chooses, between two successive reference points of said second set, a distance which is? u muLtipLe enter the distance separating two successive reference points from said first set. We thus make coincide on the one hand the first and second reference points which are closest to the beginning of said bank or portion of bank, and on the other hand the first and second reference points which are closest to the end de-Said-shore or portion of shore.
Another variant of the method of the invention makes it possible to specify the shape of the bank between a landmark and any point which does not correspond to a landmark, said landmarks corresponding to one or the other of said sets of three points of

The situation is different depending on whether said arbitrary point is located between two successive landmarks or between The last landmark and The end point of the edge of the rolled product.

According to an interesting implementation of the invention, the distance measurements are carried out by optical gauges placed at said reference points and the subsequent operations are carried out by automatic means such as a calculator.
The invention will be better understood and more easily implemented if reference is made to the examples of application which are given below, as well as to other annexed drawings, in which FIGS. 1 illustrates the definition of the straightness respectively of 'a bank, a bank portion and at a point on a bank of a Lamme product; FIG. 2 schematically illustrates a method for determining the straightness index of a portion of edge using a set of three measurement gauges; Figure 3 schematically illustrates a method of determining

Figure 1 shows a mother plate 1, having a sinuous shape which is accentuated for the clarity of the drawing. The front (head, H) and rear (tail, T) ends of the sheet metal have been cut, and the parent sheet therefore has a useful length L. Its width is substantially constant; The straightness of the sheet may in this case be expressed by the straightness of a bank. In case of significant variation in Width, L-a --------

The straightness of the other bank can be obtained by combining the constancy of the first bank with a measurement of the width of the sheet.
This figure 1 illustrates the definition of the straightness index of a rolled product which was set out in the introduction.
In Figure 2, a preferred method for determining the straightness index of a portion of the edge of a heavy plate has been explained.
This method is based on the graphic construction of an image of said edge portion from the measurement of the distances between points of this edge portion and predetermined reference points.
We consider a portion of edge (HT) of a sheet moving from left to right in front of three reference points C, B, A aligned in a reference direction substantially parallel to the axis
Longitudinal of the bank of rollers on which said heavy plate circulates. These reference points C, B, A are equidistant, so that
AB = BC = a. At these points C, 8, A are arranged optical gauges which measure, at determined successive instants, the distance between the reference direction and successive points of said edge portion.
At the early instant The gauges A, B, C measure the distances AAO, BBO and CCO respectively, while at the instant t1, they measure the distances AA1, BB1 and CC.-The time interval ( t2 - t1) is chosen equal to the time necessary for the edge to move by the distance a along the reference direction, so that in t1 the point BO goes to A1, to 81 and so on.

These measurements make it possible to determine t at any time. The straightness index of La rive at point Bj corresponding to gauge B and to the edge section of length AC = 2a. This straightness index is worth:

The values of the straightness index obtained for the different successive sections can be plotted in a diagram (FIG. 2b) and compared with predetermined limit values, upper and lower, which determine the admissible range of variation of the straightness of the sharp sheet. considered.

I To determine the coordinates of the points A., Bj, Cj of the bank and thus to be able to construct the image of this bank, we consider, for the measurements at each instant tu, the segment A. 8. as a reference segment. The horizontal projection of the shape of the heavy plate being invariable, The position of a point C. with respect to the segment A.

The construction of the image of point C is obtained in the following way.
Using the measured distances AAo and BB,., We build the trapeze AAO BOB, then we extend the side Ao Bo which cuts the perpendicular

Knowing the length CC-measured by the 0 0 gauge C, the length of the segment CO Co 'is determined. then, starting from an image of the point Ao (FIG. 2c), a segment AO BO of a length a is drawn and it is extended by a segment BO Co also of length a. In C., we carry a length Co Co perpendicular to the direction AB and we obtain Point C.

We repeat this construction at time t1, starting from points A1

and B1 and we get from point C By continuing closely in the near image, we build the image of the shore portion.
We can then draw the line Abc; joining the extreme points of this route and determining the straightness index of the shore portion considered.
For the bank section considered, this straightness index is written:
EMI11.2
The precision of this value of the straightness index depends in particular on the precision of the gauges used to measure the distances AA., B8., CC ..

FIG. 3 illustrates a method, in accordance with a variant of the invention, which makes it possible to improve this precision without recounting very precise and consequently costly gauges.
In this variant, five gauges are used aligned in the reference direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the roller bank.
These five gauges, located respectively at points A, B, C, 0, E, include a central gauge C, two extreme gauges A, E located on either side of gauge C and at equal distance from it, and two intermediate gauges B, D also located on either side of C respectively between A and C and between C and E. The gauges A and E are relatively distant from C, for example from 5 to 10 m, while the gauges B and D are relatively close to C, for example 2 to 5 m (Figure 3a).

By a construction step by step analogous to what is described above and illustrated on a larger scale in FIG. 3c, we obtain the point C 'which is an image of the point C of To make the pcint C coincide with point Co By the first step, point C 'is subjected to a vertical translation C'CO and to each intermediate point such as P' a vertical translation P'P whose amplitude is proportional to the distance separating this point P 'from the extreme point AT-.

Figure 4 illustrates the application of the method of the invention to the determination of the precise position of a point on the shore situated between two successive reference points, that is to say between two points located in face of two successive gauges at the time of a distance measurement.
In FIG. 4a, a portion of the edge between two such reference points QO and Q1 is represented, as well as the known longitudinal distance r at which the point P must be situated with respect to the known point Go. from this distance r and from the speed of displacement of the heavy plate, the instant t is determined at which point P crosses gauge 8 and the distances are again measured at this instant t.
In accordance with the method set out above, we construct

To simplify the calculation, we can assimilate the shape of the bank

between Points CL and Q1 to an arc passing through and Q1. This simplification does not constitute a limitation of the method of the invention, because it is clear that the method can be applied to any known curve defined by an equation.
In the present case of an arc of a circle, the radius R of the arc of a circle can be deduced, with a good approximation, from the relation expressing the power of a point in the circle, namely:

FIG. 4 also illustrates the application of the method of the invention in the case where it is necessary to locate with precision a point of the shore situated between the last reference point and the extreme point of the shore.
For this purpose, we close in Figure 4b, which shows the position of the sheet in front of the three gauges A, B, C at time t WHERE The last possible reference point Q2 is located opposite The gauge C. Point T represents the extremist of the shore. The sheet moves from left to right and, at the instant tfo The point T is opposite the gauge C. At this instant tao the gauges measure the position of the points P1, P2 and T. A

an instant before t ', the gauges had located the position of the points P0, P1 and P2.
To construct the image of the shore up to the extreme point T, we draw this image step by step up to point Q1, according to the method described above (Figure 2). Then, the position of the points P0 and P1 ′ is determined by interpolation between the reference points Q, Q0 and
EMI14.1
GL. top (Figure 4a). Finally, from the position of points Po and P1 and measurements relating to points P2 and T, we can construct these points P2 and T according to the method of Figure 2. We can then determine the position of all the points between P2 and T, by The interpolation method of Figure 4a.
As indicated in the introduction, The method of the present invention makes it possible to determine the straightness index of an elongated rolled product in motion, such as a heavy plate, a profile, or a thin sheet. hot or cold rolled. This determination involves the measurement of the position of the shore of the Lamme product with respect to reference points.
To perform this measurement, iL is particularly interesting to detect, using an appropriate receiver such as a camera, the shadow cast by the shore on a light panel, for example a network of photodiodes, in front of which this shore parade.
The position of this receptor with respect to the bank is however extremely important because, as shown in FIG. 5, the shape of this bank is not always clear, in particular in the case of heavy plates. The target axis of the receiver being tangential to the edge of the shore, it is important that this axis is as vertical as possible, in order to minimize the possible reading error of the position of the shore.
The receivers used are advantageously arranged in a compact housing, above the bank of the laminated product, at a sufficient distance

be able to follow the position of the shore, this trolley being carried by a tower placed next to the bank of rollers.
The present invention is of course not limited to the embodiments which have just been decanted and chandeliers. It also extends to various technically equivalent solutions, such as the use of other types of measurement gauges, the establishment of an admissible range of straightness at a point or in a portion of edge or the use of other reference directions, in particular different reference lines for the various sets of reference points, insofar as these solutions fall within the framework defined by the claims which follow.
