Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT Applicant(s): r r r HELLA KG HUECK CO.
Invention Title: ELONGATED SIGNAL LIGHT FOR VEHICLES The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: A ELONGATED SIGNAL LIGHT FOR VEHICLES The invention concerns an elongated signal light for vehicles with a light batten, comprising a light-permeable cover lens, a carrier plate for light sources and an optical lens provided between the carrier plate and the cover plate.
Such an elongated signal light for vehicles is known from DE 196 04 487 C1 and it has a light batten, which is made up from three parts only, namely the cover lens, the optical lens and the carrier plate for the light sources.
On its long lateral walls the elongated cover lens has a plurality of lug-like joining elements, between which the optical lens and the carrier plate is inserted. The carrier plate is held clamped between the connecting elements of the cover lens and is locked with the connecting elements, while the optical lens is a spacer extending between those sides of the cover lens and the carrier plate which face .20 it. At the same time the optical lens need not have any additional fastening elements for the carrier plate and is accurately distanced from the light sources of the carrier plate, since the optical lens abuts against that side of the carrier plate which faces the cover lens.
It is a disadvantage in this case that during driving it remains chatter-free only when the optical lens is tightly clamped between the cover lens and the carrier plate. To achieve a tight clamping of the optical lens, the three parts must have very narrow tolerances. If the optical lens is slightly oversize, the carrier plate can no longer be snapped together with the cover lens, whereas if the optical lens is undersize it will be held inadequately firmly between the cover lens and the carrier plate.
\\ombfiles\home$\paulad\Keep\speci\HELLA 2.doc 20/10/99 2 The present invention provides an elongated signal light for vehicles with a light batten, comprising an elongate lightpermeable cover lens, an elongate carrier plate for light sources and an elongate optical lens provided between the carrier plate and the cover lens, characterised in that the cover lens has a U-shaped cross-section, a first lateral wall, and a second lateral wall and the optical lens has an angular shape having a first leg and a second leg, the first leg of the optical lens having, fastening protrusions or fastening orifices, which are arranged in fastening orifices or fastening protrusions respectively of the first lateral wall of the cover lens, the second leg of the optical lens projects past the second lateral wall of the cover lens, and the carrier plate is provided in a clamped manner between the second leg of the optical lens and the first lateral wall of the cover lens.
The optical lens can be easily and simply inserted into the fastening orifices of the first lateral wall of the U-shaped cover lens if the angular optical lens with that leg which features the optics extends adjacent to the central web of the U-shaped cover lens, which web joins the lateral walls.
When assembling the optical lens, the fastening protrusions slide along on the inside of the cover plate, until they ooo 25 engage the fastening orifices of the cover lens.
The angular optical lens is very securely held in the cover lens and the signal light is very rigid against torsion if the angular optical lens with the free ends of its first leg abuts against the inside of the first lateral wall and with the external lateral surface of the second leg abuts against the short second lateral wall of the cover lens. The connection of the carrier plate with one leg of the cover plate and one leg of the optical lens has a very simple S° 35 construction when the carrier plate is arranged with *protrusions in orifices of the first lateral wall of the ***cover lens and is provided between fixing projections of oooe H:\lauraw\Keep\Speci\56005-99.doc 05/09/03 the second leg of the optical lens. When assembling the carrier plate, the carrier plate is first inserted with its protrusions into the orifices of the first lateral wall of the cover lens and then with the other edge is pivoted towards the lateral leg of the optical lens until the carrier plate snaps in automatically between the fixing projections of the optical lens.
The carrier plate is securely locked longitudinally when the second leg of the optical lens has a locking shoulder between the fixing projections, which locking shoulder fits into a correspondingly dimensioned cut-out of the carrier plate.
The optical lens can be fitted particularly easily and fast into the U-shaped cover lens if the cover lens and the optical lens together form a channel which tapers toward the direction of the light output.
20 The elongated U-shaped cover lens has a particularly stable construction when the cover lens has short lateral walls at both of its ends, which join with each other the first and 'the second lateral walls of the cover lens. In this conjunction it is a further advantage if, adjacent to the short lateral walls, in the first lateral wall of the cover lens a fastening depression is formed for a housing of the signal light. Due to the stable short lateral walls the light batten can be secured with a great holding force between a wall of the housing and the shoulders of the housing engaging the fastening depressions.
An embodiment according to the invention is illustrated in the drawing and they show in: Fig.l a perspective view of a cover lens, an optical lens and a carrier plate for the light sources before being assembled; Fig.2 detail in Fig.l; \\melb..fi es\home$\pau1ad\Keep\speci \HELLA 2.doc 20/10/99 Fig.3 a front view on the cover lens in Fig.l, and Fig.4 a section along the line A-A in Fig.3.
In the case of the signal light illustrated in the drawing one deals with a brake light which can be placed in an elevated position which, for example, can be provided behind the rear window of a vehicle. The signal light has a light batten comprising three parts, made up from a cover lens a carrier plate and an optical lens The cover lens has a U-shaped cross-section and has an optics (not illustrated) on the web joining the first and second lateral walls (8 and 10). In the direction of the light output the second lateral wall (10) of the cover lens is shorter than the first lateral wall The first and second lateral walls 10) form a channel, which tapers toward the web An angular optical lens is inserted into the channel, the first and second legs 9) of which are at right angles to each other. The first leg of the optical lens extends contiguously 20 with the web (11) of the cover lens while the second leg abuts with its external side against the inside of the second lateral wall On its free end the first leg has a plurality of fastening projections which engage a correspondingly dimensioned fastening orifice (7) of the first lateral wall of the cover lens The second leg of the optical lens protrudes past the short second lateral wall (10) of the cover lens and on the inside of its free end section has fixing projections between which a long edge of the carrier plate is arranged. On the other long side the carrier plate has a plurality of protrusions which engage correspondingly dimensioned orifices (13) of the first lateral wall of the cover lens Inside of the second leg of the optical lens adjacent to two fixing projections a locking shoulder (15) is moulded on, which engages a correspondingly dimensioned cut-out (16) of the carrier plate. By virtue of this the carrier \\melbfiles\home$\paulad\Keep\speci\HELLA 2.doc 20/10/99 5 plate is locked longitudinally on the cover lens (1) and the optical lens On its inside the carrier plate has the light sources which are formed by light emitting diodes.
When assembling the light batten, first the angular optical lens is inserted into the U-shaped cover lens On this occasion the fastening projections of the optical lens slide along the inside of the web until the fastening projections engage the fastening orifices of the cover lens and the first leg of the optical lens lies flat against the web (11) of the cover lens Afterwards the carrier plate with its protrusions (12) is inserted into the orifices (13) of the first lateral wall of the cover plate (1) and with its other edge is pivoted towards the second -leg of the optical lens, until the carrier plate snaps in automatically between the fixing projections This will keep the carrier plate pre-tensioned between the second leg of the optical lens and the first lateral wall of the cover lens oO** S" For the purposes of this specification it will be clearly understood that the word "comprising" means "including but S 25 not limited to", and that the word "comprises" has a corresponding meaning.
It is to be understood that, if any prior art publication is referred to herein, such reference does not constitute an admission that the publication forms a part of the common general knowledge in the art, in Australia or any ooo• other country.
