Patents Act 1990 Original Complete Specification Standard Patent P/00/011 Regulation 3.2 Revised 2/98 Invention Title The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing known to me:-
II
I
I j STEEL TIMBER COMPOSITE FLAT SHEET PALLET This invention relates to improvements in devices for the packaging of flat sheet products.
For many years the standard hard wood timber pallet has been used for the packaging of sheet products.
Problems with these pallets are the cost and availability of the hard wood, the overall weight, due to the size of timbers required to make a reasonably safe pallet, poor reusability and doubt as to it's safety when reused, difficulties in fastening the sheet product to the pallet and thin gauge material relying on the strength of the pallet's timbers for support along it's length.
The above problems are overcome by the present 15 invention, which provides a pallet device comprising of tubular steel cross bearers and steel angle reinforced structural grade soft wood bearers. This combination gives light weight, high strength and durability, with higher degree of safety due to the manufacture methods of welded joints and self drilling tek screws, as to nailing and removing a high degree of doubt as to the safe condition of the pallet.
The tubular sections are configured in such a manner S that the steel strapping used to fasten the sheet product, can be easily slid into and through the centre of the tubing and returned back over the top of the pack, tensioned and sealed in both the cross and length directions of the sheet product. The length bearers are set so that the outer bearers are ten to 30 fifteen millimetres higher than the centre bearer, this induces a cross curve down the length of the sheet product and greatly reduces the strength required by the bearers to support the sheet product as the sheet product has now become self supportive.
In another form of the invention the structural soft woods could be replaced by recycled extruded plastic sections, with the aim of increasing strength and reducing weight.
To assist with understanding the invention, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which show one example of the invention.
In the drawings: FIG. 1 shows one example of the pallet device according to this invention: FIG. 2 shows the end view of a pallet, highlighting the orientation of the bearers that induce the cross bow of the sheet product.
FIG.3 shows the placement of the steel strapping.
Referring to FIG. 1 it can be seen that the pallet device according to this invention comprises of tubular steel cross bearers 1 minimum of two and more depending upon the length of the sheet product.
steel angle reinforced soft wood outer bearers 2 The steel angles are welded to the top surface of the cross bearers and the soft wood bearers are located into the steel angles and tek screwed into 2 place. A centre line tubular steel bearer 3 located along the width centre line and welded to the top surface of the cross bearers 1 Intermediate soft wood bearers (4 are located between the outer bearers 2 and the centre line bearer 4 and tek screwed into place up through the cross bearers 1).
25 FIG. 2 shows the end view of the pallet and the orientation of the bearers. The outer bearers 2), centre line bearer (3 and intermediate bearers The top surface of the outer bearers 2 are ten to S fifteen millimetres higher than the top surface of the 30 centre line bearer 3 and five to eight millimetres S°higher than the top surfaces of the intermediate bearers FIG. 3 shows the placement of the steel fastening strap (5 through the cross bearers 2 and centre line bearer 3) up and over the top of the pack of sheet products and tensioned into place.
Claims (4)
1. A steel and timber composite pallet device comprising of tubular steel cross bearers two outer timber bearers reinforced with steel angle and a tubular steel centre bearer and intermediate timber bearers with connections between steel and steel electrically welded and between steel and timber self tapping tek screws.
2. The pallet device of claim 1 wherein each of the bearers are fixed at different heights, being outer higher than the centre bearer and inducing the sheet product to curve across the sheet and down it's length.
3. The pallet device of claim 1 wherein the steel tubular 15 cross bearers and the centre bearer are used to assist the placement of the steel strapping by passing the straps through the steel tubes and up and over the stack of sheet products and tensioned and sealed to hold the sheet product firmly in place.
4. A steel and timber composite pallet device as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. COLIN SHELDRAKE 15/9/97
