Class Int. Class Application Number: Lodged: Complete Specification Lodged: Accepted: Published: Priority Related Art: Name of Applicant: ITW Befestigungssysteme GmbH Actual Inventor(s): HORST BIERSACK, REINHARD HAUER, STEFAN REINHOLD Address for Service: PHILLIPS ORMONDE FITZPATRICK Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys 367 Collins Street Melbourne 3000 AUSTRALIA Invention Title: WALL SLOT MILLING UNIT Our Ref: 609321 POF Code: 451331/107600 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to applicant(s): -1- 600oe Wall Slot Milling Unit The invention relates to a wall slot milling unit in which a milling head supporting the motor and the milling disks is articulated in a swivelable manner on a chassis with several rotor disks on one side, and with a longitudinal- and a traverse handle, as well as an on-and-off switch on one of the handles.
Wall slot milling units in the most varied forms of construction are already known. These generally use two milling disks which are mostly formed as diamond disks and are positioned at a distance from one another, so that two parallel slots are produced when working on a wall, a cover unit, or even on a floor. The crosspiece bar which is positioned between the two [disks] can be pushed out very easily with the help of a chisel, so that the formation of a wall slot, primarily for the laying of electrical wires or even of equipment ducts, both rapidly and cleanly, is possible. In addition to the good manageability of the wall slot milling unit with the help of the two handles, one essential problem thereby consists of the elimination, to the greatest extent possible, of all dangers of injury, particularly to the user himself. The dangers are thereby particularly great at the beginning of working, upon the placing of the wall slot milling unit to the wall, and upon the setting of the motor into operation. The wall slot milling unit can, because of an asymmetrical stressing and an uneven pressing, thereby break away to the side, and the.
danger also exists that the still-running milling disks will injure the user himself upon the slipping of one hand from the handle.
The task of developing a wall slot milling unit of the type stated above, in such a manner that the dangers of injury which have been noted are reduced -to the greatest possible extent, with a simple operability, thus forms the basis for the invention.
For the solution of this task, it is provided, in accordance with the invention, that a release switch for the on-and-off switch, as well as an insertion release switch for a swivelling movement blocking device, which locks the milling head unit against the chassis in the covered position of the milling disks, are positioned on the opposing handles.
On the one hand, through the release switch on the opposing handles, it is indispensable for the user to hold the wall slot milling unit by both of the handles before switching on the motor for the milling disks, since he can not, of course, otherwise activate the on-and-off switch on the other handle. This not only impedes an inadvertent switching on, but also a careless switching on of the wall slot milling unit, which otherwise frequently occurs for reason of the need for comfort during longer periods of work, if this is only grasped by one handle.
The device for blocking swiveling movement, which prevents the milling disks from being able to move downwardly out of the chassis before the said device for blocking swiveling movement has been released again, is, in addition, of particular importance. Without the activation of the device for blocking swiveling movement, the milling disks which are, possibly, necessary, already rotating remain covered in a raised position, so that no danger of injury can arise from them.
It can be provided, with particular advantage, that the insertion release switch can only be activated after the release switch. This prevents the insertion release switch from being activated, and the device for blocking swiveling movement from thereby being shut off practically completely. It would, that is to say, then be possible for the user, without being aware of or knowing that the device for blocking swiveling movement is no longer working, to set the device into operation and then, upon the emergence of the milling disks by way of the lower side of the chassis, to come to an undesired operation of the milling disks.
This not only prevents the user from injuring himself, of course, but it also prevents the device from beginning to work at a wrong position where it is not supposed to be working, such as if has been set.on a table, for example.
In order to subsequently be able to activate the on-and-off switch of the motor, the insertion release switch can only be activated after the activation of the release switch, and this is immediately connected with the beginning of the milling works, so that no mistakes and errors can occur here.
It thereby lies within the framework of the invention that the release switch and the insertion release switch are combined in one common multiple-contact switch. The release switch is activated through the first activation stage and the insertion release switch [is activated] by means of further pressing.
In order to always be able to maintain a presettable milling depth during working, an adjustable insertion blocking unit, which limits the swivelling movement of the milling head in relation to the chassis, can be provided in an additional development of the invention, and this can be carried out, in a particularly simple manner, through the fact that the adjustable insertion blocking unit comprises an eccentric cam disk, which is placed on a solid counter-blocking unit of the chassis, and can be adjusted by means of a control knob on the milling head.
In order to be able to mill as far as possible into the edge, even during the milling of wall slots in the area of a traversely-abutting wall, it can be provided, in accordance with one additional development of the invention, that the milling head is articulated to the chassis on one frontal end, and that the milling disks are placed behind the milling head casing wall on the other frontal end. This forward-running arrangement of the milling disks on the wall slot milling unit also guarantees, in addition, a comfortable working by means of an oblique pressing of the device away from the body of the user, which is also advantageous, in addition, for reasons of safety.
Since such types of wall slot milling units can, of course, be used in principle for the plastering of walls, in the case of a masonry wall, when the joints between the individual wall stones are more or less exposed and recessed, problems still arise, over and over again, from the jerking of the device and the changing insertion depths of the milling disks if the rotor disks of the chassis enter into such mortar joints during the process. In order to eliminate this danger, it can be provided, in accordance with a further characteristic of the present invention, for the chassis to have at least three axes spaced at a distance from another, with each one bearing a rotor disk. Through this provision of more than two rotary axes, the danger of such an insertion of the rotor disks during the simultaneous tilting of the chassis relative to the horizontal plane of movement is ruled out since, in every case, only one rotary axis can be involved here and, in this case, the chassis is, of course, impeded from such a tilting upon insertion by the rotor disks on the two additional axes of movement.
Further advantages, characteristics and details of the invention proceed from the following description of an example of implementation, as well as from the diagrams. These depict the following: Figure 1: A perspective view of a wall slot milling unit in accordance with the invention; Figure 2: A perspective view of the wall slot milling unit with the milling head swivelled in an upward direction; Figure 3: A view from above onto the wall slot milling unit in accordance with Figures 1 and 2; Figure 4: A lateral view of the wall slot milling unit in the direction of the arrow (IV) in Figure 1; Figure 5: A lateral view; and: Figure 6: A view of the chassis from above, without the milling head being articulated therewith.
The wall slot milling unit in accordance with the invention which is depicted consists of a chassis with rollers 3, 4 and which are positioned distributed on four different axes (6 to as well as a milling head (10) which is articulated, in a swivelable manner, on the chassis on the rear end in the area of the rollers The milling head (10) comprises a motor which is provided in an encapsulated manner, for the driving of the shaft on which two milling disks (13) are clamped at a distance which corresponds to the width of the wall slot which is desired, as well as two handles (14 and 15). The handle which proceeds laterally in the longitudinal direction, supports the on-and-off switch for the activation of the motor (11) on its lower side. On the second handle which is displaced by approx 90a relative to the plane of the handle (14) the angle of 90° is not mandatory, of course a switch (16), which is constructed as a multiple-contact switch, is positioned, and is constructed in the first stage as a release switch for the releasing of the on-and-off switch and, in the second stage, as an insertion release switch for a device for blocking the swiveling movement, not depicted here, which is positioned behind the slot (18) cooperating with the locking tongue unit which [device for blocking the swiveling movement] prevents the milling disks from being able to move out from the aperture (17) of the chassis in a downward direction and into the work position which is depicted in Figure 4. As long as the insertion release switch has not been pressed, the milling disks (13) are positioned above the base plane of the chassis so that, even when the motor is operating, neither the danger of an injury of the user, nor the danger of damages to a support layer on which the wall slot milling unit has been placed before its use, is present, regardless of whether the device has already been set into operation or not.
A spiral-shaped cam disk, which is placed on a tower-like counter-blocking unit (20) on the chassis, can be seen at reference figure The depth of insertion of the milling disks can be adjusted through the rotation of the cam disk The articulation of the milling head (10) on the chassis is preferably carried out around an axis which is in agreement with the axis of the rear rotor disks while the milling disks are positioned as close to the other end as possible. It is thereby possible to work, with the wall slot milling unit in accordance with the invention, very close to the area of an edge between two walls.
A connecting part for the placing of a suction tube, in order to be able to cleanly suction off the milling dust which arises during work, can be seen at reference figure For this purpose, the milling disks (13) are positioned inside of a cover unit (22) which, for its part, overlaps with a counter-cover unit (23) on the chassis and thus forms a suction space, from which the milling dust which arises can be suctioned off by way of the connecting part (21).
It is to be understood that, throughout the description and claims of the specification the word "comprise" and variations of the word, such as "comprising" and "comprises", is not intended to exclude other additives, components, integers or steps.
