MOTORCYCLE
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: 2 CONTAINER SUPPORT ASSEMBLY FOR A MOTORCYCLE Field of the Invention This invention relates to a container support assembly for a motorcycle and, in particular, but not exclusively, to a support assembly for supporting containers such as panniers and boxes on a motorcycle for use by postmen.
Description of Prior Art Mail is conventionally delivered by postmen using motorcycles upon which various containers are mounted to carry mail and parcels. Conventional techniques for mounting containers on motorcycles are somewhat ad hoc and generally comprise a crate or the like which is arranged at" the rear of the motorcycle or a basket which is suspended from the handle bars or arranged at the front of the 15 motorcycle.
Object and Statement of the Invention The object of this invention is to provide a container support assembly for use with a motorcycle which enables containers to be supported in a more stable fashion whilst 20 enabling the required quantity of mail to be carried.
g The invention may be said to reside in a container support assembly for use with a motorcycle, including: a mounting frame section for coupling to a rear of the motorcycle, the mounting frame section having an 00 25 upper portion for supporting a first container, and a pair of depending side portions extending downwardly from the upper portion; support frame sections for supporting second and third containers; a first component of a releasable engagement on each of the side portions; a second component of the releasable engagement 3 *.eO

on each of the support frame sections for releasably securing the support frame sections, and therefore the second and third containers, to the mounting frame section; and wherein the first and second components of the releasable engagement have a pair of sleeves on the side portions and pins on the support frame sections respectively, the pins being locatable in the sleeves for securing the support frame sections to the side portions to thereby releasably secure the support frame sections and second and third containers to the mounting frame section.
The above arrangement enables three containers to be mounted on a motorcycle for transport of mail or other 15 products and enables the second and third containers to be easily released for loading of mail in them and then securement to the motorcycle as well as providing an arrangement which is stable whilst still providing sufficient capacity to carry the desired quantity of mail or other products.
Preferably the support frame sections include handles extending upwardly beyond the second and third containers for enabling the second and third containers and the 25 support frame sections to be raised and lowered to engage and release the pins from the sleeves to enable the second and third containers to be removed from the mounting frame section.
Preferably the first container comprises a box firmly mounted to the upper portion.
Preferably a front container is provided for mounting to the handle bars of the motorcycle, the front container being in the form of a flexible bag having a flexible lid which can be rolled up to enable access to the container and securing means for retaining the lid in a rolled G\MCooer\Keep\Speci\4O494-95.doc 29/09/99 4 condition.
Preferably the securing means include a velcro (trade mark) type fastener.
Brief Description of Drawings A preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure IA is a plan view of a motorcycle including the container support assembly of the preferred embodiment; Figure 1B is a view along the lines 1B-1B of Figure IA; Figure 2 is a plan view of mounting frame section according to the preferred embodiment of the invention; Figure 3 is a side view along the line III-III of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a rear view along the line IV-IV; Figure 5 is a rear view of a support frame T: section according to the preferred embodiment of the invention; Figure 6 is a plan view of the support frame of Figure 5 along the line VI-VI of Figure 5; and Figure 7 is a side view along the line VII-VII of Figure Wt h25 Detailed Description of Preferred Embodiment With reference to Figure 1A, a motorcycle 10 is shown upon which is mounted the container support assembly 12 of the preferred embodiment of the invention. The motorcycle also carries a front container 14 in the form of a flexible bag which has a flexible lid or cover 17 which is adapted to be rolled up and secured in a rolled condition by a velcro type fastener (not shown) to provide ready -access to mail or other articles in the container 14. The container stafflahy/keeplspeciVPN0293.CAP 14.12.95 5 14 is secured to the handle bars 18 of the motorcycle by brackets or the like (not shown).
The assembly 12 is arranged at the rear of the motorcycle above the rear wheel and behind seat 20 of the motorcycle.
Assembly 12 carries a pair of panniers 22 which are identical in construction with respect to one another and a box 24.
The assembly 12 includes a mounting frame section 30 which is secured to the motorcycle and support frame sections 32 to which the panniers 22 are connected and which are releasably engageable with the mounting frame section 30 as will be described in more detail hereinafter. Stays 31 (see Figure 2) are provided to assist lateral support to the assembly by engaging with the motorcycle. The support sections 32 include handles 34 to enable the panniers 22 to be lifted from and secured to the mounting frame section Figures 2 to 4 show the mounting frame section 30. The mounting frame section 30 includes an upper frame portion formed of top plates 40 and 42 and cross members 44 and 46 which connect the top plates 40 and 42 together. Holes 48 are provided in the plates 40 and 42 and cross members 44 and 46 for enabling the mounting frame section 30 to be bolted to a portion of the motorcycle and also to receive fasteners for bolting box 24 to the upper frame section shown in Figure 2.
As is best shown in Figure 3, the mounting frame section includes a pair of side frame sections 50 (only one shown in Figure 3) which includes side plates 52 and 54. Rails 56 extend downwardly from the side plates 52 and 54 and are joined by a bottom cross piece 58. The stays 31 extend from the cross pieces 58 to the frame of the motorcycle staff/ahy/keep/speci/PN0293.CAP 14.12.95 6 and suitable nuts and bolts 33 are provided to make the physical connections between the cross pieces 58 and the stays 31. The tops of the stays 31 can be held to the motorcycle by similar nuts and bolts passing through a rigid part of the motorcycle frame.
The rails 56 each carry hollow sleeves 60 which may be square in cross section or of any other desired cross section.
As is best seen in Figure 2, the plates 40 and 54 and the plates 42 and 52 can be formed as an integral right angled section with a curved transition between the plate sections 40 and 54 and 42 and 52.
Figures 5 to 7 show the support frame sections for supporting the panniers 22. The panniers 22 are not shown in Figures 5 to 7 for ease of illustration. With reference to Figure 5, the support frame sections include handles having a hand grip portion 70 and two depending pin sections 72 secured to vertical rails 74. As is best shown in Figure 7, the pins 72 are spaced from the rails 74 by a spacer 76 which merely can be a section of weld or the like so that the lower section 72a of the pins 72 are clearly spaced from the rails 74. The rails 74 are joined by cross pieces 76 and 78 and the cross piece 78 is provided with a securing tongue The rails 74 also have horizontal support frame sections 82 which are integral with the rails 74 and which are bent generally at right angles, as is best shown in Figure 7, for supporting the bottom of the panniers 22 when mounted to the support frame sections 32. A lower cross member 84 extends between the free ends of the sections 82 as is best shown in Figure 6.
staff/ahy/keep/speciUPNO293.CAP 14.12.95 7 Cross members 76 and 78 are provided with holes 90 for securing the panniers 22 to the support frame sections 32 with the bottom of the panniers sitting on the frame members 82 and 84.
The handles 70 can be used to lift the support frame sections 32 together with the panniers 22 when mounted thereon and the support frame sections 32 are releasably secured to the mounting frame section 30 by locating pins 72a in the sleeves 60 and by clipping tongue 80 over cross member 58. Thus, the panniers 22 are securely but releasably coupled to the mounting frame section 30 and therefore to the motorcycle 10. The panniers 22 can be lifted by means of the handles 70 from the mounting frame section to enable reloading with mail at a depot or mail centre and reconnected with the motorcycle as desired.
The panniers 22 are identical and therefore interchangeable from one side to the other of the assembly 12. Thus, it is not necessary to load a given pannier 22 to a particular side of the assembly 12 and this generally assists loading.
Since modifications within the spirit and scope of the invention may readily be effected by persons skilled within the art, it is to be understood that this invention is not limited to the particular embodiment described by way of example hereinabove.

Claims (5)
1. A container support assembly for use with a motorcycle, including: a mounting frame section for coupling to a rear of the motorcycle, the mounting frame section having an upper portion for supporting a first container, and a pair of depending side portions extending downwardly from the upper portion; support frame sections for supporting second and third containers; a first component of a releasable engagement on each of the side portions; oo a second component of the releasable engagement S 15 on each of the support frame sections for releasably securing the support frame sections, and therefore the o*o* second and third containers, to the mounting frame section; and wherein the first and second components of the 20 releasable engagement have a pair of sleeves on the side portions and pins on the support frame sections respectively, the pins being locatable in the sleeves for o securing the support frame sections to the side portions to thereby releasably secure the support frame sections and second and third containers to the mounting frame section.
2. A container support assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein the support frame sections include handles extending upwardly beyond the second and third containers 30 for enabling the second and third containers and the oo support frame sections to be raised and lowered to engage and release the pins from the sleeves to enable the second and third containers to be removed from the mounting frame section.
3. A container support assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the first container G:\MCooper\Keep\Speci\40494-95.doc 29/09/99 9 comprises a box firmly mounted to the upper portion.

A container support assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims and including a front container is provided for mounting to the handle bars of the motorcycle, the front container being in the form of a flexible bag having a flexible lid which can be rolled up to enable access to the container and securing means for retaining the lid in a rolled condition. A container support and front container as claimed in claim 4 wherein the securing means include a velcro (trade mark) type fastener. 15 6. A container support as claimed in any one of the preceding claims and substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
