Description

1.
Improvements to Chimney Damper This invention relates to improvements to a Chimney Damper Device.
In all houses with open fireplaces, it is desirable or compulsory in many building codes that the opening of the chimney be closeable so as to stop heated air from other heating appliances (eg. gas heater) escaping up this opening. Some dampers are fitted at the bottom of the chimney but these do not stop rain, insects, or birds from entering.
Others fitted at the top, catch the wind or the single flap swinging down interferes with the flue opening.
10 These problems are overcome by this invention which comprises of S.a box with downward and outward sloping sides open at the top and bottom. Two flaps are fitted just below the top of the box, each flap having its own axle that is offset so that gravity causes the flaps to hang in the vertical position. Therefore the damper is open. The flaps 15 are rotated on their axles by a pair of cables. The two cables are one for closing and one for opening connected to a quadrant with handle at the fireside for positive operation.
In this invention, when the damper is closed (flaps horizontal) the method of repelling rain water is as follows; The flaps are folded with a slight "Vee" along their length. The rain water runs to the lowest point of the flap, being the base of the "Vee", then off the ends of the flaps. A short part of the side of box is folded under this part of the flaps. The folded under part can also be the flaps open position stop.
The damper may be made of sheetmetal or cast metal with either Sheetmetal or Cast flaps.
To assist in understanding this invention reference will now be made to the drawing. The damper is shown in the closed position to best show the water run off method.

2.
In the drawing; Figure 1 Shows the damper device in the closed position. It can be seen that rain water landing on flaps will run to the lowest point of "Vee" folded in flaps and off the ends of flaps. The water will then flow over a small piece of the sides of box(l) which has been folded under this part of the flaps a.
•o• The Claims defining this invention are as follows; 1. A chimney top damper device comprising of a metal box with outward and downward sloping sides, open at top and bottom. Two flaps fitted on axles for opening and closing damper are fitted across the top of damper box. When flaps are closed (horizontal) water runs to the base of a "Vee" folded in flaps and then over a small piece of side of box which is folded under the ends of this "Vee".
2. The damper device of Claim 1 be made in sheetmetal.
3. The damper device of Claim 1 be made in cast metal.
4. A chimney top damper device substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
