Description
-2- This invention relates to a gaseous composition containing a fumigant or sterilising gas which is suitable for compressing into a cylinder.
Many fumigants and sterilising gases are flammable and in order to supply these gases to the market it is necessary to combine a small amount of the gas with a nonflammable liquid such as liquid carbon dioxide. For example, phosphine is marketed as a composition of 2 wt% phosphine in liquid carbon dioxide (C0 2 Such a phosphine composition when contained in a 48 litre cylinder and under appropriate pressure will typically contain about 16.5m 3 of gas at ambient temperature. When the phosphine composition is vaporised, the vaporised gas typically contains about 2.6 vol% PH 3 in
CO
2 It is critical when filling a cylinder with liquid carbon dioxide containing a flammable fumigant or sterilising gas, that the cylinder is not overfilled. Because liquid .ooooi
CO
2 is not capable of being compressed, a cylinder containing too much liquid CO 2 may explode on warming due to the thermal expansion of the liquid CO 2 To ensure that overfilling does not occur it is necessary to individually fill each cylinder by weight.
This is inefficient, time consuming and not cost effective.
It would be desirable to find a non-flammable composition capable of containing a .ooooi flammable fumigant or sterilising gas and which is capable of being compressed into a 0oI cylinder without criticality as to the exact weight added to thereby facilitate filling of a o°0° number of cylinders at the same time.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a non-flammable gaseous composition which is capable of being compressed into a container adapted for release of the gaseous composition comprising: a non-flammable amount of a flammable sterilising gas or fumigant; nitrogen gas; and carbon dioxide gas wherein said nitrogen gas is present in a concentration sufficient to prevent said carbon dioxide gas from entering the liquid phase when compressed in said container.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of supplying a fumigant or sterilising gas comprising the step of charging a gaseous composition according to the first aspect into a container under pressure.
Preferably the container is a cylinder equipped with an eductor tube.
Any flammable fumigant or sterilising gas can be used such as phosphine (PH 3 carbonyl sulfide (COS), methyl bromide (CH 3 Br), or ethylene oxide The amount of fumigant or sterilising gas used is limited by the amount that can be o• •tolerated without the liberated gas mixture becoming an explosion hazard. When S• 15 phosphine is used, the amount by volume is typically limited to 2.5% in the gaseous composition when released.
The gaseous composition of the invention is suitable for filling a plurality of containers at the same time, for example, 12 cylinders on a pallet, thereby improving i production capacity.
o:ooo The amount of carbon dioxide present is limited by that value at which liquefaction occurs. Typically amounts up to 65 vol are used. Preferably the amount of carbon dioxide used is toward the higher end of this range as it enables more of the fumigant or sterilising gas to be present.
-4- A preferred composition contains phosphine, 45 to 65 vol carbon dioxide, and to 55 vol of nitrogen.
Clearly the actual amounts used are dependent on the size and maximum pressure rating of the cylinder.
EXAMPLE
A composition containing 2.4%v/v phosphine in a mixture of 60 vol carbon dioxide and 40 vol nitrogen was prepared and compressed into a 48 litre cylinder to a pressure of 163 bar. When in use the gas released from the cylinder will consistently contain 2.4% v/v PH 3 In use it is necessary to replace two cylinders of the existing 2.6% v/v phosphine/liquid CO 2 mixture with three cylinders of this composition in order to supply the equivalent amount of phosphine gas. However, the benefits of being able to compress the gas in a plurality of cylinders at the same time outweighs this small increase in cylinder numbers.
Although the invention has been described with reference only to selected 15 examples and preferred embodiments, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the invention may be embodied in many other forms.
