Class Application Number: Lodged: Complete Specification Lodged: Accepted: Published: Priority Related Art: 0o 0 00 40 9 *0 9s *O 9 *9a 0 0* 8 0C 9 9@90#@ Name of Applicant: T x Winter Optik GmbH i Ar\ae rv\O" Actual Inventor(s): Klaus Wiedner Address for Service: PHILLIPS ORMONDE FITZPATRICK Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys 367 Collins Street Melbourne 3000 AUSTRALIA Invention Title: SAFETY GOGGLES Our Ref 421518 POF Code: 1611/1712 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to applicant(s): -1- .7 2 SAFETY GOGGLES The invention relates to safety goggles of the type including a sight piece and a frame with ventilation apertures provided therein for the interior space formed by the sight piece and the frame and the face of the wearer.
For safety goggles of the generic type, which are worn by workers during, in some cases, heavy physical labour, it is important to bring about some ventilation of the interior space by way of ventilation apertures, while realising optimal protection against the entry of dust particles and etching liquids such as acids or lyes.
Accordingly it would be desirable to embody safety goggles of the generic type such that they offer high conveniences of wearing along with optimal protection, this being accompanied by producability at a low cost.
According to the invention, there is provided safety goggles including a sight piece and a frame, the frame including an upper and a lower frame member disposed at upper and lower edges of the sight piece respectively and lateral members which interconnect said upper and lower frame members, wherein the goggles include at least one ventilation aperture for ventilating the interior space formed by the sight piece and the frame and the face of the user, the or each aperture being formed in said lateral frame and the face of the user, 20 the or each aperture being formed in said lateral frame having an opening surface generally perpendicular to the viewing direction of the user and including a deflector which is operative to deflect air coming though said opening surface towards the user, wherein the or each ventilation aperture is located at or adjacent a respective one of said upper or lower frame members.
Owing to the lateral arrangement of the ventilation apertures, it is of course not very probable that particles or splashes of liquid are admitted, since they usually originate from the working area in from of a person's face. The provision of a deflector additionally ensures that particles or drops that might hit do not enter the interior chamber. On the other hand, the exchange of air is hardly impaired so that the apertures can fully master their function of ventilation.

I;
Further, the provision of at least one such ventilation aperture at or adjacent a respective one of the upper or lower frame members results in good functional design.
By advantage it can be provided that in the vicinity of the lateral frame members, narrow slitted ventilation apertures are additionally disposed, the S* a oe e a a a o a P28509c 3 opening surface of which is approximately perpendicular to the viewing direction of the user and which are located below the place where the headstrap is fixed.
Preferably, a collecting groove is formed in a manner known per se along the upper side of the pair of safety goggles and passages are provided, extending from the collecting groove to the lower side of the goggles. As a result, any liquid collected can accurately drain tff downwards.
Advantageously, recesses for the suspension with positive fit of a breathing mask or the like are provided on the frame of the goggles.
The passages, too, can be used as recesses for a breathing mask to be hooked in.
Details of the invention will become apparent from the ensuing description of a preferred embodiment, taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which: 9 Figure 1 is a lateral view of a pair of safety goggles according to the S.invention in an illustration partially broken open; and 15 Figure 2 is a plan view, the side portion being partially broken open.
A pair of safety goggles illustrated in the drawings comprises a frame 1 with an upper frame member 2, two lateral frame members 3 and a lower frame member 4 as well as a sight piece 5- outlined by dashes.
S. In the vicinity of the lateral frame member 3, ventilation apertures 7 are provided at the upper and the lower end of the frame member 3. The opening surface 8 of the ventilation apertures 7 is perpendicular to the viewing direction ro, (arrow 9) of the user. A conduit-type section 10 is followed by a deflector 11, which is perpendicular to the conduit-type section 10 and consequently parallel to the opening surface 8. At the end of the conduit-type section 10, in front of the deflector 11, a passage 12 is provided, which opens into the interior space 13 enclosed by the sight piece 5 and the frame 1 on the one hand and by the face of the wearer on the other. The arrows 14 illustrate how the exchange of air can take place between the interior space 13 and the outside, it being ensured that particles or drops having a straight flight path cannot enter.
Slitted ventilation apertures 16 ensuring an exchange of air according to the arrows 17 are formed additionally on the back wall 15 of each lateral frame member 3. Since these ventilation apertures 16 are arranged on the back wall

?rr 4 and owing to their reduced width, there is almost no chance for particles or drops of liquid to enter.
The upper frame member 2 comprises a collecting groove 18, at the end portion of which passages are provided which extend downwardly.
If necessary, the conduit-type sections 10 can also be used as hook-in holes for a breathing mask, a mouth guard or the like to be suspended in position.
