Patents Act COMPLETE SPECIFICATION
(ORIGINAL)
Class Int. Class Application Number: Lodged: Complete Specification Lodged: Accepted: Published: Priority Related Art: **r *e Name of Applicant: Gerhard Rosenberg Actual Inventor(s): Gerhard Rosenberg Address for Service: PHILLIPS ORMONDE FITZPATRICK Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys 367 Collins Street Melbourne 3000 AUSTRALIA Invention Title: PLASTIC WELD SADDLE FOR ESTABLISHING A BRANCH CONNECTION TO A PLASTIC PIPE Our Ref 475288 POF Code: 20412/257085 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to applicant(s): -1- This invention relates to plastic weld saddles for establishing branch connections to plastic pipes, with a connection socket formed to the saddle body for attaching a branch pipe, a fitting or the like, as well as a cylindrical support surface for welding the saddle body to the external shell of a main pipe (brochure "fusiotherm Rohrleitungssystem" [pipe system] (1994) of the company aquatherm GmbH, 57439 Attendorn-Biggen, Germany).
Weld saddles of this type available on the market are welded on the plastic pipes by means of an electric hand torch which has a heating rod. At both sides of the heating rod welding tools are screwed for heating the external shell of the pipes and the support surface of the weld saddles. To establish the weld joint between the weld saddle and the pipe, each welding tool, which are heated to approximately 260 0 C, is at first placed on the pipe by the hand torch. The external shell surface of the pipe is heated, and the plastic outer layer of the pipe is melted or plasticised in the welding area. Without interruption of the heating process of the shell surface of the pipe the
S
15 weld saddle is then placed onto the saddle welding tool which was heated to approximately 2600C. The welding device being located on the pipe with the pipe welding tool, and the support surface of the weld saddle is melted. The welding device :.is then removed from the pipe, and the weld saddle with the plasticised support surface is pressed onto the plasticised welding surface of the external shell of the pipe.
2o After the welding process which requires a certain cooling time, a bore hole is provided in the bottom of the weld saddle and the wall of the pipe covered by the said weld saddle for establishing a branch connection which may be reinforced by a metallic pipe supporting shell.
Practice has shown that a uniformly smooth support of the pipe welding tool on the welding surface of the external shell of the pipe cannot be achieved with a hand torch due to the length of the heating reflector rod. Therefore, the welding surface of the pipe is not melted uniformly and a homogeneous welding joint between the weld saddle and the pipe is prevented. Such a defective welding joint may lead to leakage in a pipeline system, and in the case of external forces there is a danger that the weld saddle tears off.
The object of the present invention is to further develop the weld saddle of this type in respect of a function-safe weldability with plastic pipes.
I
According to this invention there is provided a plastic weld saddle for establishing a branch connection to a plastic pipe, with a connection socket formed to the saddle body for attaching a branch pipe, a fitting or the like, a cylindrical support area for welding the saddle body to the external shell of a main pipe, including a welding socket formed to the support surface of the saddle body and arranged coaxially to the connection socket for attaching the weld saddle in a corresponding bore in the wall of the main pipe.
It is preferred that the length of the welding socket of the weld saddle has a larger dimension than the wall thickness of the main pipe.
The welding socket which is formed to the support surface of the saddle body of the weld saddle and arranged coaxially with the connection socket of the weld saddle for a branch pipe renders possible a weld joint between the weld saddle and a pipe, ~which is tight and resistant to external forces.
The invention is explained by means of the drawings which illustrate the following: Fig. 1 is a cross sectional view of a branch connection of a plastic pipe, and Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of a welding device with welding tools for melting the welding socket and the support surface of the weld saddle as well as the wall of the bore in the plastic pipe for incorporating the 20 welding socket of the weld saddle.
The plastic weld saddle 1 having a bore hole 21 for establishing a branch S connection to a plastic main pipe 2 according to Fig. 1 has a connection socket 4 which is formed to the saddle body 3 and in which a plastic branch pipe 5 is welded.
At the cylindrical support or welding surface 6 of the saddle body 3 a welding socket 7 is formed in one piece, coaxially to the connection socket 4.
The weld saddle 1 is welded with the welding socket 7 in a corresponding bore 9 provided in the wall 8 of the main pipe 2 and is welded to the support surface 6 at the external shell 10 of the main pipe 2.
The length 11 of the welding socket 7 of the weld saddle I has a larger dimension than the wall thickness 12 of the main pipe 2, to ensure tightness of the weld joint between the weld saddle 1 and the main pipe 2, in the case of pressures and temperatures of the medium passing through the pipes, which occur in the main -111 pipe 2 and the branch pipe 5, and achieving a high resistance of the weld joint to external forces.
The illustration in Fig. 2, shows the heated welding tool 14 which is screwed to the bottom side 13a of the heating rod 13 of the hand torch (not fully shown) and which has a form corresponding to that of the weld saddle 1 is at first placed on the main pipe 2 to produce the weld joint between the weld saddle 1 and the main pipe 2.
The welding tool 14 is placed on the main pipe 2 using the hand torch in an area where the bore 9 was previously provided in the pipe wall 8 for the welding socket 7 of the weld saddle 1, in such a way that the heated heating mandrel 15 of the welding tool 14, which mandrel is located in the bore 9 in the main pipe 2, melts or plasticises the bore wall 16. The heated heating surface 17 of the welding tool 14 melts or plasticises the cylindrical external shell 10 of the main pipe 2 in the area of the location bore 9 for the welding socket 7 of the weld saddle 1.
Furthermore, the weld saddle 1 is placed onto the heated welding tool 18 which o s15 is screwed to the upper side 13b of the heating rod 13 of the hand torch and which has 0..
a form that corresponds to that of the weld saddle 1, in such a way that the surface of the welding socket 7 reaching into a corresponding heating bore 19 of the welding tool 18 and the support surface 6 of the welding socket 7 of the weld saddle 1 adjacent to a cylindrical heating surface 20 of the welding tool 18 are melted or plasticised.
20 Thereafter the hand torch is removed from the main pipe 2 and the weld saddle 1 is removed from the welding tool 18 of the hand torch, and then the weld saddle 1 is manually pressed onto the main pipe 2, in such a way that the welding socket 7 of the weld saddle 1 is welded with the wall 16 of the bore 9 in the pipe wall 8, and the support surface 6 of the saddle body 3 of the weld saddle 1 is welded with the cylindrical external shell 10 of the main pipe 2 in the area of the location bore 9 for the welding socket 7.
