I_
-1A- MOTOR-GEARBOX UNIT The present invention concerns rotating electrical machines in general and a motor-gearbox unit in particular.
It is important for the bearing assemblies of electric motors such as motorgearbox units to have maximum temperature resistance and enhanced lubricant performance if they are to rotate at very high speeds.
In prior art motor-gearbox units the maximum safe rotation speed is often limited by bearing assembly lubrication.
The bearing assemblies of prior art motor-gearbox units are lubricated with grease. The greases employed do not allow high rotation speeds of the motor.
This application proposes a motor-gearbox unit in which the construction and arrangement of the various components allow relatively high motor rotation speeds, that is speeds above 4000 rpm, without significant increase in the 4 **w ii: 15 temperature of the bearing assemblies.
:The motor-gearbox unit of the present invention may also provide improved ventilation of the bearing assembly.
According to the present invention there is provided a motor-gearbox unit including: ;i 20 a rotary motor whose drive shaft is coupled to a drive gear to transmit rotational movement of the drive shaft to an output gear through the intermediary of an intermediate gear coupled to said drive gear and to said output gear; first and second bearing assemblies disposed on the drive shaft on respective sius of the rotary motor and coupled drive gear; a motor flange disposed around said rotary motor and supporting said first bearing assembly; a gearbox flange disposed around said drive and output gears and said intermediate gear; -v F% MJP -2said second bearing assembly being supported by said gearbox flange; said second bearing assembly being immersed in a liquid lubricating said gearbox flange; and said motor flange and said gearbox flange each being cooled by forced ventilation, said forced ventilation of said gearbox flange being part of the forced ventilation of said motor flange.

In accordance with se ondary features of the motorgearbox unit, said gearbox flange is cooled by part of the forced ventilation f said motor flange; a venti tion cover is disposed on the upper part of said gear x flange; i lower part is cooled by natural ventilation; or cooling fins are disposed in the lower part of aid gearbox flangc.
In accordance with another secondary feature of the invention the motor-gearbox unit comprise a front seal held between the contacting surfaces of said motor flange oo* '25 and said gearbox flange.
An advantage of the motor-gearbox unit of the invention specific to the construction and arrangement of the various component parts of the assembly is the facility to lubricate the bearing assembly by means other than those employed in the prior art.
Another advantage of the motor-gearbox unit of the invention also specific to the construction and arrangement of the various component parts of the assembly is simple and efficient ventilation of the bearing assembly.
3a A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:- Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal cross-section of the motor-gearbox unit of the invention.
Figure 2 shows the side of the gearbox flange facing the motor.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINC Figure 1 is a view longitudinal cross-section of the motor-gearbox uBic of the invention.
Figurei shows the side of the gearbox flange facingCe motor.
ETAL UEbCiTIN HE PREFERRED EMBODI.ENT The motor-gearbox unit shown in longitudinal crosssection in figure 1 comprises a circular motor 1 whose drive shaft 2 is coupled to a drive gear 3 to transmit the rotational movement of the drive shaft to an output gear 4 (figure 2) through the intermediary of an intermediate gear 5 (figure 2) coupled to the drive gear and to the output gear.
First and second bearing assemblies 6, 7 are disposed on the drive shaft on respective sides of the circular motor.
A first flange 8 is disposed around the circular motor. The motor flange supports the first bearing *assembly so that the longitudinal axis of symmetry of the bearing of the first bearing assembly is coincident with 25 the rotation axis of the motor.
A second flange 9 is disposed around the drive and output gears and said intermediate gear.
In accordance with an essential feature of the motor-gearbox unit of the invention, the first and second bearing assemblies are disposed on resnective sides of the circular motor and the drive gear.
To this end the second bearing assembly is supported by the gearbox flange so that the longitudinal axis of symmetry of the bearing of the second bearing assembly is coincident with the rotation axis of the motor.
The bearing of the first bearing assembly is lubricated with grease, for example.
The lubricant of the gearbox flange is preferably oil which is used to lubricate the second bearing assembly.
In accordance with another essential feature of the motor-gearbox unit of the invention the gearbox flange is cooled by forced ventilation.
The flange of the gearbox of the motor-gearbox unit can then be cooled by part of the forced ventilation of said motor flange.
To this end, the motor-gearbox unit comprises a first ventilation cover 10 on the upper part of the 15 gearbox flange and a second ventilation cover 11 on the upper part of the motor flange, for example.
A pulsed air feed 14 is disposed in the upper part of the ventilation ccvers, for example.
The upper part of the gearbox flange is then cooled 20 by forced ventilation while its lower part is cooled by natural ventilation, ~To increase the rate of thermal exchange in the lower part of the flange of the gearbox of the motorgearbox unit the lower wall of the gearbox flange eeo 25 comprises cooling fins 12.
S" The flowrate of the airfeed to the motor side is in the order of 1.25 m 3 /s and the air temperature is in the order of 40°C, for example.
The flowrate of the airfeed to the gearbox side is in the order of 0.5 m 3 for example. The air temperature is in the order of 40 0 C and its velocity is in the order of 10 m/s.
Finally, when the motor-gearbox unit of the invention is used on a high-speed train, the velocity of air in the lower area cooled by natural ventilation is
_C~II
dependent on the speed of the train, which is 350 kph, for example.
Figure 2 is a front view of the side of the gearbox flange facing the motor.
Figure 2 shows the output gear 4 and the intermediate gear A front seal 13 is held between the contacting surfaces of the motor and gearbox flanges, for example by means of a groove 15 on the side of the gearbox flange facing the motor. This seal is essential for isolating the space between the inside surfaces of the motor and gearbox flanges from the external environment.
The ventilation covers of the motor and the gearbox Iare preferably made from aluminum.
