Generally, processed leather is soft and flexibe, and will have a particular colour, while a raw hide, stripped of hair, cuticle and fat, will exhibit entirely different properties. Also, a raw hide which has not been processed is very soft when wet but will become hard and will contract as it dries. In the case of cattle hides, a hide portion obtained after slaughter is divided into an outer skin and inner hide, the outer skin being separated from the inner hide and then processed to produce high priced commodities such as shoes or handbags. The material properties of the inner hide are poor, however, due to the structure of the hide, and so it is sold for processing at a low price, even as low as one hundredth of the price of the outer skin.
Object and Summary of the Invention It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantages to enable greater utilisation of raw inner hides.
There is disclosed herein a method for colouring hides, comprising the steps of: bleaching a raw inner hide which has been separated from an outer skin and 20 processed to a predetermined thickness, and cutting the inner hide to a predetermined shape so as to obtain a raw inner hide product material; fn performing a first pattern colouring process of applying a first pattern to a front surface of said raw inner hide product material with a resist in a liquid state, and S't when said resist is in a state in which its surface has hardened at least enough so that the resist does not flow, soaking the raw inner hide product in a first colouring pigment tank containing a first water based pigment, so that said water based pigment colours the surfaces of said raw inner hide product material except those portions to which said resist has been applied; and removing said resist from said inner hide product material.
30 Brief Description of the Drawins I t A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figs. 1A to 1G show process steps for forming a basket-like product; and Figs. 2A and 2B show process steps for forming a hair clip accessory product.
Detailed Description of Preferred Embodiments Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of methods for colouring hides in accordance with the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. Such methods are suitable for making ornamental craft JN:\libdiOO440HRW I I I -2products or accessory products by utilising raw inner hide material which has been processed to separate a desired thickness of raw inner hide from the outer skin.
A general form of the method is as follows. Raw inner hi~i-faterial, which has been separated from the outer skin and processed to a predetermined thickness, is bleached by a bleaching agent which is neither a chrome used in existing hide processing methods nor a vegetable tanning. A raw inner hide product material is then obtained by cutting the hide to the shape required to form the desired hide product. A first colouring process comprises forming a first pattern on the surface of the dried raw inner hide product material with a resist, which comprises resistive material made of an adhesive agent in a liquid state, the liquid state preferably being a result of elevating the temperature of the fluid, and then soaking the material in a first colouring pigment tank containing a water based pigment when the resist is in a hardened state, ie. when at least the surface of the resist has hardened enough so that the resist does not flow. The water based pigment thereby colours the whole of the raw inner hide product material except those portions underlying the first pattern of resist.
A second pattern colouring process can then be performed, which process comprises forming a second pattern of resist, whilst it is in the liquid state, on the coloured surface of the raw inner hide product material, after the material has passed through the first pattern colouring process. The next step of the second pattern S 20 colouring process is soaking the material in a second colouring pigment tank, after surface hardening of the resist has taken place, thereby colouring the whole material with the second colouring pigment except the portions covered by the first and second patterns of resist. The colouring process can be repeated using different colour pigments by protecting patterns of colours using the resist. When the final pattern colouring process is finished, and the resist which has protected the coloured patterns in the previous colouring processes is removed, a design having various colour tones can be obtained. The rear surface of the raw inner hide product material will be coloured by the final colouring pigment, and this pigment will also provide the background S" colour on the front surface.
30 The order of the first and subsequent pattern colouring pigments is from a lighter colour to a darker colour, the order of colours being determined without taking into account the respective brightness of the colours. When the pattern to be formed using the resist is to be a closed curve pattern, such as a circle, the colouring of the hide by a desired colour pigment can be limited to being within the boundary of that 1' 35 closed curve pattern, and then when the pigment has dried and been covered by the resist, that resist becomes integral with the closed curve resist pattern, and the region previously coloured is protected when the hide is soaked in other pigment tanks.
Therefore any colours can be coloured and presented quite freely.

A
-3- When the colouring processes to form a colour design on the raw inner hide product material have been completed, and after the hide product is either assembled or shaped to the desired form, and then dried, the coloured design is pr5tedted by coating the product with a colourless and transparent coating material on both its front surface and rear surfaces.
The colouring process of another form of the present invention will be explained in more detail as follows.
The raw inner hide which has been separated from the outer skin of a hide is processed to a predetermined thickness and bleached. Any foreign material is then eliminated and simultaneously fat is removed whereby the raw inner hide original material itself is cleaned so that the colouring will occur properly.
The bleached raw inner hide original material is cut to the form appropriate for the desired end product. It is desirable to cut the raw inner hide original material when it has dried, because if the material has been cut in a non-dried state, it is difficult to dry the material and maintain it in the shape desired. Accordingly, when the material is cut after the raw inner hide original material has been stretched out and dried, not only is the cutting to a desired form easy but also the desired form of the hide product can be obtained after the colourir, process.
Since the bleached a. cut raw inner hide product itself has a light colour, 20 which may be nearly white, then when it is desired to colour the background of the pattern, the first pattern colouring process can be commenced in that state. It is also possible to perform the first pattern colouring process to produce a basic background of the colour of the raw inner hide product material, and in this case, it is essential that the -ur tone of the basic background colour be a lighter colour than the first colouring 1 i j:lent.
Thus, when the first pattern is formed by a method such as sprinkling or squeezing the resist in the form of a liquid adhesive agent onto the raw inner hide product material, the first pattern of resist adheres to the surface of the raw inner hide product material and remains to protect that portion. To aid the forming of the first pattern, the first pattern can be formed with the resist in an appropriately heated state in order that contracting and adhering and the like can occur properly.
After the first pattern is constituted as above, and when the resist enters a state in which the resist does not flow, ie, at least the surface of the resist has hardened, the raw inner hide product material is soaked in the first colouring pigment tank containing a first water based pigment whereby the first pattern colouring process for colouring the whole of the front and rear surfaces with the first pigment. After this step, except the first pattern portion protected by the resist, is finished. The colour tone of the first colouring pigment must be a colour of lighter colour tone than the next colouring INAll11bttOO"4OHRW .i pigment used, because the next colouring pigment colours at least some of the material coloured by the first colouring pigment used in the previous process, so as to alter the colour of all areas not covered by resist. When it is desired to express another colour by colour mixing, a different colour is used so that the desired colour tone is expressed by the combination of the previously coloured region and the next colouring pigment. For instance, in the case where the previously coloured background colour is yellow, and the next colour is blue, a green colour can be expressed.
After the raw inner hide product material has passed through the first pattern colouring process, and the next pattern of resist is formed on the surface of the material, then when the resist is in a non-flowing or surface hardened state and the hide product material is soaked in the next colouring pigment tank containing the next pigment, the next pigment colours the whole of the hide except the portions protected by the first and next patterns of resist. Since the next pigment coloured on the first pigment is a colour tone deeper than the first pigment, the exposed raw inner hide product material finishes the next pattern colouring process in a state coloured by the next pigment colour tone.
When it is desired to colour the material further, after the next pattern colouring process described above, the steps of forming a pattern in a desired shape S 20 using the resist and successively soaking in a colouring pigment tank containing water pigment of another colour tone is repeated as many times as required. After the final colouring process, the raw inner hide product material is processed to a desired product form. In the case where the desired product must be processed to form either a basket shaped craft product or to form a curved or deformed shape such as a wristlet, it is processed at a time when the moisture content of the raw inner hide product material, after the final colouring process, is 60-80% so that the product material is flexible, whereby it is shaped to the shape of the desired product form. Thereafter it is dried to a state in which its form is maintained.
The resist used to form the pattern separates from the surface of the raw inner 30 hide product material during the drying process, and when that which has not fallen .4 away has been forcibly separated and removed, a hide product having a multi-coloured design consisting of various colour tones and patterns, and having a background colour of the final coiouring pigment can be obtained. When above-described resist is removed, the previously coloured tones are revealed.
Examples for making a hide product by a method for colouring hides in accordance with the present invention are described below.
EXAMPLE 1 (N:\ibttj00440:HRW ~L I ipn4 This is an example of a process for making a hide craft product of a basket shape, and is described with reference to Figs. 1A-G.
Various patterns are constituted by repeating a method in wiici each portion of the desired final product is cut out from a raw inner hide original material 1 so as to fit to a standard size as shown in Fig. 1A, and then a first pattern 2 of a desired shape is formed on the surface of the portions using a resist in its liquid state (refer to Fig.
1B). The portions are successively soaked in a first colouring pigment tank 3 (refer to Fig. 1C), a second pattern 4 formed on the first coloured portion with the resist (refer to Fig. 1D), and then soaked again in a second colouring pigment tank.
Alternatively, the second colouring process can proceed, with various patterns protected by the resist, by a method in which a different colouring occurs by means of pouring a water based pigment of a particular colour tone within a closed curve pattern formed of resist either on the bleached background or on the basic colour tone surface coloured with the basic background colour, and then the pigment dried. The surface just coloured is then covered with resist and the material soaked in a next colouring pigment tank. Further colouring processes, similar to either second colouring process described above, may be performed as many times as desired. After forming the final pattern (refer to Fig. 1E), and when the background colclring of the front surface and the background colouring of the rear surface has been completed, the cut portions are S 20 assembled using a mould or frame of the desired shape. Assembly occurs when each I t 1 assembly part of the raw inner hide product material has a moisture content of 60-80% (refer to Fig. iF). After drying, it is then taken off the mould after separating and removing each of the patterns of the resist, and a hide craft product of basket shape as a shown in Fig. 1G is obtained. The product is then coated with a colourless and transparent coating material, such as a lacquer, preserving the multi-colour design and its background colour. Since the hide craft product has a multi-colour design on the surface of the product, a high grade of hide craft product can be produced.
EXAMPLE 2 This is an example of the method applied to the main body part of a hair clip.
The colouring of the design is finished with various colour tones by repeating a process in which a first pattern is designed within a hair clip shape 5 of desired size on the raw 'inner hide original material 1 by utilising a resist in a liquid state and then soaking the material in a first colouring pigment tank whereby the first colouring pigment colours exposed parts of the hide and thereafter a next pattern of resist is formed and again the material is soaked in a next colouring pigment tank. Thereafter the hair clip main body part is punched from the material by a press. The main body part then coated with a colourless and transparent coating material such as a lacquer and a hide hair clip accessory coloured with a multicoloured pattern is obtained.
IN:\lAibttIOo440:HRW ~IIIIL11 41111 i 1 It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of methods differing from those described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described and embodied in a colouring method for colouring various patterns to a raw inner hide of cattle skin by a dyeing technique using a liquid state adhesive agent as a resist, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, as various modifications and changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention. For example, the number of steps of adding resist and subsequently soaking the hide in a pigment may be varied, and may include a minimal number of steps, such as a single step of adding a pattern of resist to the raw inner hide product material and a single soaking step, to provide a finished article with only two colour t.nes that of the raw hide and that of the pigment.
