Lawrie R. Baker, Peter J. Yttrup and David W. Olive Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia Suspended Flooring System ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION DETAILS [311 Application No(s) 1331 Country [32] Application Date PK2945 AU 22 October 1990 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- -1- SUSPENDING FLOORING SYSTEM FIELD OF THE INVENTION The following invention relates to a system for suspending a floor, and more particularly though not exclusively to a method of supporting a wooden floor above ground level in a brick veneer domestic dwelling.
PRIOR ART Known methods of suspending a wooden floor for example in a domestic.dwelling are generally time consuming and to a certain extent S: inefficient. Base brick work is required in the initial stages of 0S 1, 0 construction and the brick veneer skin of the dwelling is often not able to be layed in a single operation. Furthermore, drainage is often a 0*ee problem and disturbance to the contour of surrounding land is often unavoidable. Furthermore, where a concrete slab type construction is :0: S. employed, soil retention and/or drainage systems are often required on :15 some cut and filled sites.
A further problem in known methods of construction is the potential for articulated joint discontinuity at base brick work floor level.
~OBJECT OF THE INVENTION It is the object of the present invention to overcome or 20 substantially ameliorate the above disadvantages.
0 DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION There is disclosed herein a building construction method applicable for brick veneer type constructions or the like, the method comprising: providing reinforced concrete strip footings at a periphery of said 0 25 construction, o providing a plurality of reinforced concrete stumps so as to be at least partially supported by said strip footings, providing a plurality of foot pads in an interior region of said construction, providing internal stumps on said foot pads, laying bearers upon said peripheral and internal stumps so as to provide a means for supporting a floor, providing brick work around said periphery ,ying at least some of said brick work to at least some of said peripheral stumps.
Generally, the above method may enable articulation joints to be detailed off the framing. Joints can extend continuously from the .92 '7I~ ;,RLFI29071 2 footings and be aligned through their correct locations at window and door openings.
There is further disclosed herein a brick veneer type construction comprising: reinforced concrete strip footings at a periphery of the construction, a plurality of reinforced concrete stumps at least partially supported by said strip footings, a plurality of foot pads in an interior region of said construction, internal stumps on said foot pads, bearers supported upon said peripheral and internal stumps so as to provide a means for supporting a floor, and brick work around said periphery, at least some of said brick work being tied to at least some of said peripheral stumps.
Beneficially, said brick work is supported by said strip footings.
Typically, floor members are supported by bearers which are in turn supported by said stumps.
Advantageously, each of the stumps is provided with a reinforcing pipe extending therethrough from top to bottom.
Suitably, a top end of the reinforcing pipe is bent over in the vicinity of a bearer.
Beneficially, a lower end of said reinforcing pipe is adapted to be driven into a foundation.
25 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example wit' reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a schematic sectional elevational view of a suspended platform flooring system, 30 Fig. 2 is a schematic perspective view of a top end of one of the stumps depicted in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a further schematic perspective view of a top end of one of the stumps depicted in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a schematic perspective view of a top portion of a stump 35 tied to adjacent brick work.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In the accompanying drawings, there is schematically depicted a suspended platform flooring system 1. The system 1 comprises a plurality o..:Oo 0 0 .0 oe oo o0:o 00 ooom o* o o e *oo a I* tg f. A 9 -3 of peripheral reinforced concrete stumps 2 supported above reinforced concrete strip footings 3.
Also depicted in Fig. 1 is one of a plurality of internal stumps 4 supported by footing Also depicted is a face of brick work 6 also supported by concrete strip footings 3.
Brick face 6 is attached by means of ties 8 at various locations to peripheral stumps 2.
Extending across upper ends of stumps 2 and 4 are bearers 7 over which a floor is supported.
It can be seen from Fig. 1 that within each of stumps 2 and 4 a longitudinal reinforcing pipe 9 is provided. The upper end of pipe 9, as best shown in Fig. 3 is turned down over bearer 7. Additionally, and as best shown in Fig. 2, a number of builder straps 10 may be employed to 15 secure adjacent ends of bearer 7 over a stump 2.
It should be appreciated that modifications and alterations obvious to those skilled in the art are not to be considered as beyond the scope 'of the present invention. For example, a plurality of pipes 9 may be provided within each stump 2, 4.
