S COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR THE INVENTION ENTITLED: Protective plug for connector or disconnector banks The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 1A- The invention relates to a protective plug for connector or disconnector banks of 4 F telecommunication systems.
if t From the specification of German Patent Application No. P 3709875.6-34, a protective plug of the mentioned species is known. This protective plug comprises two half shells of housing, in the interior of which a protective hybrid with two parallel conductive paths is arranged. The conductive paths are connected over conductor contacts with the a-b wires or wires, resp., of the telecommunication 1 20 line. Further, overvoltage suppressors arranged side-by-side are provided being held i between conductive paths of the protective hybrid and an earthing sheet. The earthing sheet arranged underneath the protective hybrid comprises for holding the overvoltage suppressors two resilient sheet-metal tongues being angled to form U-shaped clamps laterally to the longitudinal sides of the earthing sheet. In order to connect the I 25 overvoltage suppressors to earth, two additional sheet-metal tongues are required.
These sheet-metal tongues comprise one leg each being spaced relative to the conductive paths. It is disadvantageous, with this protective plug, that by the arrangement of two side-by-side overvoltage suppressors and by the earthing sheet including several sheet-metal tongues, the width and the thickness of the housing are increased considerably.
911024,dbwspe.035,kronc, -2- When inserting the protective plug into a connector or disconnector bank, thus the wiring side of the bank is hidden such that for connecting or disconnecting (wiring) cable wires, first the protective plug has to be pulled out. Another disadvantage is that the housing of the protective plug is formed as two-piece housing.
According to the present invention there is provided a protective plug arrangement for use with a connector or disconnector bank of a telecommunication system, the plug arrangement comprising a collective earth connection, and a housing with overvoltage suppressors and conductor contacts which in use provide electrical connection between first terminals of the overvoltage suppressors and electrical contacts of the connector or disconnector bank, wherein the housing includes an insertion channel extending adjacent second terminals of the overvoltage suppressors, and wherein said collective S' earth connection is provided with a lug which is removably engageable into said insertion channel for electrical earth connection to said second terminals of the S° 15 overvoltage suppressors.
Embodiments of the present invention enable the provision of a protective plug, the housing of which is advantageously small, such that cables connected on the wiring side of a connector or disconnector bank may be accessible even after insertion of the protective plug.
Further advantageous embodiments of the invention are apparent from the dependent claims. In particular, according to an embodiment of the invention the lugs of the collective earth connection for contacting the overvoltage suppressors may exhibit a short length only.

7 -4- The protective plug 1 consists of a one-piece plastic housing 2, the front side 10 of the housing 2 being formed open. This front side 10 is closed by inserting a lug 11 of a collective earth connection 5 into an insertion channel 48 or by a sheet-metal part as will be explained hereinafter in detail.
In the interior 12 of the housing 2, two strip-type conductor contacts 13, 14 of a metal material are inserted, the ends 15, 16 of which being advanced towards outside from the housing 2 of the protective plug 1 and being fixed by holding pieces 49 in the housing 2. These ends 15, 16 represent together with a plastic piece 17 arranged between the ends 15, 16 and formed on the housing 1 the insertion section 18 of the protective plug 1. The plastic piece 17 includes, here, a latch 43.

S-If 9 1* i The sections of the .conductor contacts 13, 14 arranged in the housing 1 are spring-loaded such that they are pressed-in only after insertion of the overvoltage suppressors 3 into the guide grooves 21, 22 and 23.
The overvoltage suppressors 3 are inserted into the protective plug 1 from the open front side 10 and rest resiliently with one connection 29 against a melt bead inserted between the conductor contacts 13, 14 and the overvoltage suppressors 3. By the resilient positioning, a safe contacting is achieved.
On the other pole side 28, the overvoltage suppressor 3 in the first embodiment according to Figs. I to 4 is held as countersupport by the resilient latch hooks 6, 7 arranged at the longitudinal sides 8 of the housing and is, thus, fixed in the housing 2 of the protective plug 1. The ends 32 of the latch hooks 6, 7 are directed towards each other to the longitudinal axis 9 of the hosuing 2.
In the second embodiment according to Figs. 5 to 11, -6the latch hooks 6, 7 are arranged centrally on the longitudinal axis 9, on which, additionally, a central piece 33 is provided. The central piece 33 comprises two clamping edges 34 for both-sides contact to the overvoltage suppressors 3 and a guide piece 35 for guiding the lugs 11 of the collective earth connection j 5, as will still be described later in detail. The overvoltage suppressors 3 are, thus, held on both sides by a latch hook 5, 7 and by the clamping edge 34 of the central piece 33 in the housing 2 of the protective plug 1.
In the third embodiment (Figs. 12 to 16), the overvoltage suppressors 3 are held in the housing 2 by shoulder *#pieces 24. The shoulder pieces 24 engage into the open front side 10, for the two overvoltage suppressors 3 two shoulder pieces 24 each being provided.
In the fourth embodiment (Figs. 17 and 18), the overvoltage suppressors 3 are held In the housing 2 by a p si, sheet-metal part 50 being of U-shaped cross section with rectangularly bent-off side walls 51. The side walls 51 comprise openings 52 into which engage latch hooks 54 arranged at the two narrow sides 45 of the housing 2 and fix, thus, the sheet-metal part 50 at the housing 2. By the sheet-metal part 50, the open front side 10 of the protective plug I is closed. Against the inside 55 of the sheet-metal part 50 rest the pole sides 28 of the overvoltage suppressors 3, the outside of the sheet-metal part 50 is turned towards the Insertion channel 48. The overvoltage suppressors 3 are, thus, connected electrically to the sheet-metal V part 50. The Inside 55 of the sheet-metal part serves, further, as contact surface for the short-cir- Scuiting bridges 25, 26.
In the following. the construction and the plugging-on -7of the protective plug 1 on the connector or disconnector bank 4 is explained in more detail.
According to Fig. 5, the connector or disconnector bank 4 made of plastic is plugged on lugs 37 of a metal mounting bracket 36 connected to an earth line and is engaged therewith. Such a connector or disconnector bank to be latched on a mounting bracket 36 consists of a lower part and of an upper part latched therewith. At the connector or disconnector bank, at the one side (cable side) the cable wires 38 coming from the subscribers, and on the other side (wiring side) the wires S39 leading to exchange installations are connected to insulation displacement contact pieces 40, 41 disposed Sin two rows. The insulation displacement contact piece of the one row is connected over a fork-type contact piece 47 to the insulation displacement contact piece 41 of the other row.
In parallel to the connector or disconnector bank 4, a n metal collective earth connection 5 is plugged on. The collective earth connection 5 comprises at the front i asides two fork-type contact pieces 57 engaging over the lugs 37 of the mounting bracket 36 and connecting, thus, the collective earth connection 5 electrically to I the mounting bracket 36.
t it t 4, The collective earth connection 5 comprises several lugs 11 with interposed slots 42. Per double wire (a-b wire),.one lug 11 is provided.
In case an overvoltage protection is required for the cable wire 38 connected to the connector or disconnector bank 4, then for:each cable-wire one protective plug 1 is inserted into "the bank 4 between the two rows of insulation displacement contacts 40, 41 into the fork-type contact 47.
-8- The latch 43 of the insertion section 18 of the protective plug 1 enqages, here, into the bank 4. The fork-type contacts 47 engage over the conductor contact ends 15, 16 such that the cable wires 38, 39 are connect-ed electrically with the conductor contacts 13, 14. One lug 11 each of the collective earth connection engages into one insertion channel 48 of a protective plug 1.
In the first embodiment of the protective plug 1 (Figs.
1 to the lugs 11 press the hooks 6, 7 holding the overvoltage suppressors 3 away as shown in Fig. 4 and contact the one pole side 28 of the overvoltage suppressors 3 being, thus, connected to earth. The overvoltage suppressors 3 are pressed by the resilient conductor contact pieces 13, 14 against the lugs 11 of the collective earth connection 5, thus a safe contacting betveen the lugs. 11 and the pole. side 28 of the overvoltage suppressors 3 being achieved. When pulling the protective plug I out off the connector or disconnector bank 4, the latch hooks 6, 7 engage again behind the one pole side 28 of the overvoltage suppressors 3 and fix them again in the housing 2 of the protective plug 1.
In the second embodiment of the protective plug (Figs.
to 11), the lugs 11 cover one half each of the front ALI. side 10 of the protective plug 1 such that the slot 42 disposed between the lugs 11 extends centrally on the longitudinal axis 9 of the protective-. plug 1 and receives the latch hooks 6, 7 and the guide piece 35 of the central piece 33. For a better guiding of the ligs 11, two additional guide pieces 44 are arranged at the front side 10 of the narrow sides In the third embodiment (Figs. 12 to 16), the lugs are, S- 9 when inserting the protective plug 1 into the insertion channel 48, pressed under the shoulder pie:es 24, as shown in Fig. 12. In order to facilitate the insertion, the lugs 11 are, in this embodiment, slightly bent off at the front side 46.
In the fourth embodiment (Figs. 17 and 18), the lugs 11 are provided with a shorter length relative to the embodiments described previously, as the lug 11 in this embodiment needs only be connected electrically with the sheet-metal part 50. For guiding the lug 11, one guide angle 53 each is provided at the longitudinal o:"o sides 8 of the housing 2 such that in the insertion 00 o. channel 48 the lug 11 of the collective earth connec- O tion 5 is arranged between the guide angles 53 and the sheet-metal part SIn case several protective plugs 1 are connected side-by-side at the longitudinal sides 8, a protective plug bank 31 is formed.
0 0 'A o In the following, the overvoltage case is briefly described. In case an overvoltage occurs, the overvoltage or the overcurrent, resp., is conducted over the cable wires 38, 39, the insulation displacement contacts 41, the fork-type contact 47, the conductor contacts 13, 14, the melt bead 30 to the one pole side 29 of the Sovervoltage suppressor 3.
The overvoltage suppressor 3 filled with a noble gas ignites, thus the overvoltage being conducted to the other pole 28 of the overvoltage suppressor 3 being connected electrically with the collective earth connection 5. The overvoltage is, thus, conducted over the fork-type contacts 41 and the collective earth connection 5 to the mounting bracket 36 being connected to an earth line.
10 4' In case of a permanent ignition of the overvoltage suppressor 3, the melt bead 30 will melt because of the developing heat, thereby the resilient short-circuiting bridge 25, 26 contacting the lug 11 of the collective earth connection 5 or the sheet-metal part 50 connected to the collective earth connection and short-circuiting the overvoltage suppressor 3 (fail-safe-behaviour). A descruction of the protective plug 1 is thus prevented.

Claims (7)

1. A protective plug arrangement for use with a connector or disconnector bank of 3 telecommunication system, the plug arrangement comprising a collective earth connection, and a housing with overvoltage suppressors and conductor contacts which in use provide electrical connection between first terminals of the u/ervoltage suppressors and electrical contacts of the connector or disconnector bank, wherein the housing includes an insertion channel extending adjacent second terminals of the overvoltage suppressors, and wherein said collective earth connection is provided with a lug which is removably engageable into said insertion channel for electrical earth connection to said second terminals of the overvoltage suppressors. tel j 2. A protective plug arrangement according to claim 1, wherein each conductor Scontact includes a short-circuiting bridge which engages into said insertion channel if a melt bead becomes molten as a result of an overvoltage.
3. A protective plug according to claim 1 or 2, wherein each overvoltage suppressor is held within said housing by two resiliently biased hooks.
4. A protective plug according to claim 3, wherein the hooks are arranged at the longitudinal sides of the housing. A protective plug according to claim 3 or 4, wherein the hooks are resiliently Sbiased towards each other whereby to enable a said overvoltage suppressor to be in use clamped therebetween.
6. A protective plug according to claim 6 or 7, wherein the inward facing surface of the sheet-metal part provides a contact surface for short-circuiting bridges and for said second terminals of the overvoltage suppressors, and the outward facing surface of the sheet-metal part serves as contact surface for the lug of the collective earth connection.
9. A protective plug according to claim 1, wherein the overvoltage suppressors are arranged in a row along the longitudinal axis of the housing. A protective plug according to claim 1, wherein several protective plugs are formed side-by-side as protective plug bank.
