14166/77-L Printed by C. J. THOMPSON, Acting Commonwealth Government Printer, Canberra o1 i This invention relates to a means of cleaning the external rear view mirrors of motor vehicles.
External rear view mirrors of motor vehicles during rain and other wet conditions become covered in moisture. As a result the operator of the vehicle has an unclear view of what is happening behind him and the risk of an accident is thereby increased. The usual method of correcting this situation is by opening the vehicle window and cleaning the face of the rear view mirror with the hand or a cloth. This procedure in itself, because of its awkward nature and the length of time the operators hand is removed from the vehicle controls, adds to the risk of an accident. The object of this invention is to provide a means of cleaning moisture from the face of a vehicle external mirror which can be operated by a switch contained within the vehicle.
According to the invention there is an electric motor attached to the base of a mirror housing. A vertical shaft, incorporating a continuous spiraling groove is supported at its base by the shaft of the motor and at its top by a bearing attached to the housing. A sleeve, incorporating a guide pin, is fitted around the grooved shaft and is caused to more up and down full length of the rotating shaft as the guide pin follows the groove. Attachments to the sleeve cause a rubber wiper blade to move across the face of the mirror.
A particular embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a view of the intervals of the assembly as seen from the mirror face side.
Figure 2 is a view of the internals of the assembly as seen from the side.
Figure 3 is a plan view as seen from above.
The electric motor 1 is attached to the base of the cast aluminium mirror housing 2 by means of bolts 3. A hole in the bottom end of a vertical continuously spirally grooved shaft 4 is fitted over the motor shaft 5 and both shafts fixed together by a pin 6. The other end of the spirally grooved shaft 4 fits within a support bearing 7 which is contained within a cover 8 attached to the mirror housing by bolts 9.
End play in the shaft 4 is eliminated by the use of shims 10. A sleeve 11 is fitted over the shaft 4. A guide pin 12 which is oval in section and which is free to rotate is fitted within an extension 13 of the sleeve 11.
Depth adjustment of the pin 12 within the spiral groove is by means of a set screw 14 and locknut 15. Rotation of the shaft 4 by the operation of the motor 1 causes the pin 12 and sleeve 11 to travel the length of shaft 4. When the sleeve 11 reaches one end of the shaft 4 it continues to follow the groove and travels the shaft 4 in the opposite direction.
Rigidly attached to the sleeve extension 13 is a rod 16 to one end of which is attached a roller bearing 17 which moves within guides 18 which are part of the housing 2. An extension 19 of rod 16 passes through a slot 20 in the housing 2 which is sealed by rubber strips 21 held in place within grooved sections of the casting 2. Rod 16 is attached to the wiper arm assembly 22 the rubber blade of which is moved against the face of the mirror 23.
