592073 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA PATENT ACT 1952 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION (Original) FOR OFFICE USE Class Int. Class Application Number: .7 Lodged: Complete Specification Lodged: Accepted: aQ o. Published: o'°::.Priority: Related Art: 0~0 77 +Name of Applicant: Address of Applicant: 0 0 *dip# Actual nventor(s) DE BEERS INDUSTRIAL DIAMOND DIVISION (PROPRIETARY) LIMITED 45 Main Street, Johannei burg, Transvaal, South Africa.
Peter Noel TOMLINSON Klaus TANK 4 00 0 Addlress for Service: DAVIES COLLISON, Patent Attorneys, I Little Collins treet, Melbourne, 3000., Complete Specification for the invention entitled: "CUTTING TOOL FOR A MINING MACHIN8" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us I SO 0 1 0 09oo 0 0.* *a 99 Q 99 type which is used to cut a variety of soft materials such as coal.
In machines of this type a plurality of cutting tools (also known as 5 elements) are positioned, for example, on the surface of a drum, in a cutting direction against the face of the material to be cut. Each 0too,, comprises a holding lug and an insert usually secured in a S" socket in the lug. The cutting tip of the insert may be made of 9 899 cemented carbide or abrasive compact while the holding lug is usually made of hardened steel.
i In use, the cutting tip cuts the material. On passage through the material, the zone of the lug behind the tip contacts the material and frequently produces sparking. Sparking can even be produced with a dulled cutting edge of carbide. In coal mining any sparking during cutting is extremely hazardous because of the likelihood of considerable quantities of methane gas being present in the atmosphere.
3 According to the present invention, there is provided a cutting tool for a mining machine comprising: a holding lug having one end adapted for mounting in a surface such as the surface of a drum and an opposite working end, and an insert bonded to the working end of the lug and presenting a working face of abrasive compact which provides a cutting edge for thhe tool, and which extends across the entire width of the lug to which the insert is bonded, that end of the lug lying entirely behind the compact working face.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which S•re Figure 1 illustrates a side view of a cutting tool of the invention; S Figure 2 is a view in the direction of arrow A of Figure 1 and Figure 3 is a perspective view of an insert used ini the cutting tool of Figures 1 and 2.

C
The abrasive compact may be any known in the art, but is preferably a diamond abrasive compact. The diamond abrasive compact may have a second phase containing a diamond catalyst or it may be free of such second phase. Generally, the compact will be bonded to a cemented carbide support to form a composite abrasive compact which provides the insert for the cutting tool.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings a cuttiig tool for a mining machine of the type used for cutting coal r -4o 00 Q o o opQ o o 0 0 oa O ooe o o4 a 0 a 00 a 0 0 0 e* 0 6 oI i 00 0 040 0 @4 o 90 0 0 0 0 oa *0 oa oa 0 p o 04 a a 00 8 0 00S eo comprises a holding lug 10 made of hardened steel having one end 12 adapted for mounting in the surface of a drum and an opposite working end 14. The working end 14 has a recess 16 formed therein. Located in the recess and bonded to the lug is an insert 18. The insert 18, which is illustrated by Figure 3, comprises a diamond abrasive compact 20 bonded to a cemented carbide support 22. The compact has a widened end 24 which tapers to a rounded opposite end 26. The compact has a cutting edge provided by vertical sections 28, sloping sections 30 and a rounded section 32. In practice it is the rounded 10 section 32 which performs the bulk of the cutting work.
As can be seen from Figure 2, the diamond abrasive compact 20 extends across the entire width of the working end 14 of the lug so that the working end is located entirely behind this highly abrasive surface.
This highly abrasive surface provides a keen cutting edge which will not readily spark when contacting colliery rock. Since the metallic lug and metal-containing carbide support are both located entirely behind this surface and do not protrude beyond the cutting edge, contact of either of these two components with hard rock is unlikely.
The ri'sks of sparking and consequent fire taking place are thus 20 minimised.
