Description
A BRICK FOR THE REDUCTION OF SOUND TRANSMISSION This invention relates to a building unit in the form of a brick or block for use in Construction of buildings to reduce noise transmission reduction.
The present invention thus provides a building unit having a pair of opposite face defining members, means interconnecting said face defining members, said interconnecting means including means for preventing or reducing sound transmission between said face defining members.
Preferably, the means for preventing or reducing sound transmission between the facedefining members comprise resilient means. Typically the interconnecting means comprise one or more ties which extend between the face defining members. In one form, each tie includes a pair of tie members each connected at one end to the face defining members and each connected to each other through resilient connection means such as a resilient pad adhered or otherwise attached to the tie members. The tie members may be connected to the face defining members by adhesives, mechanical fixing means, formed integrally with the face defining members or by any other connecting means.
In a further form, the interconnecting means may itself comprise a resilient connecting means. The resilient connecting means may comprise a foamed plastics material, which may be of open or closed cell construction.
The face defining members may be of any configuration and define on their outer sides a planar face or textured face defining the face or both faces of the building unit. The face defining members suitably lie in spaced parallel planes. The face-defining members may be formed so as to enable the building units to inter-engage longitudinally.
Reference will now be made to preferred embodiments of the invention read in conjunction with the attached drawings.
Page 1 of The building unit in a preferred embodiment of the invention is in the form of a brick designed to be used in a single or double wall system where improved noise transmission reduction and noise impact resistance is required without the necessary addition of a secondary system. The brick is not restricted by size.
The brick reduces noise transfer from one medium to another by: Providing improved noise impact resistance due to the reduced common cross sectional area between the two external faces.
Connection between opposing faces by a membrane or tie that reduces the transfer of sound through a common connection.
The face-defining members of the brick can be fabricated from: Concrete o Clay 0 Fire retardant composite material Lightweight aerated concrete.
Reconstituted organic material 0 Combination of the above.
o Any of the above as outer layers attached to open /closed cell material.
0 Or other materials The brick can be moulded or extruded into universal sizes or can be customised to suit specific needs.
The design allows the brick to be moulded or extruded as a finished article with the cavity ties in place or Be assembled on site before installation The cavity ties between the face defining members of the brick can be formed Page 2 of With or without a resilient connector in the middle o Expandable to allow universal application for different width walls.
Helical spring type.
Designed as breakaway if required Recessed into the mould or adhered to the inside face Of an open or closed cell material suitable to minimise noise transfer.
Of the same material as the brick.
Or other materials The cavity ties can be made from Light gauge metal with or without a resilient connector in the middle Wire with or without a resilient connector in the middle Rubber Plastic Concrete knock out sections An open or closed cell material suitable to minimise noise transfer Combination of the above 4 Ceramic SFire retardant material Or other materials The resilient connectors between the ties may be formed of rubber, plastics or plastics foam, or any other material, which will reduce or attenuate the transmission of sound waves.
Bricks can be installed by Gluing SConcrete mortar Joints In resilient tracks clips Bricks may be formed to interlock longitudinally such as by a tongue-and-groove like joint.
