Abstract

A method and apparatus for marking road surfaces, runways etc. Marking material, normally a heat fusable solid in particulate form, is passed from a hopper (10) into a duct (18) where it is mixed with hot pressurised gas from a burner (20), the heat from the gas causing the marking material to partially melt. The marking material is then directed along a flight tube (22) from which it is expelled onto the surface (24) being marked. When the material cools the particles fuse together leaving a durable marking on the road surface. The apparatus is mounted on a vehicle in such a way that markings may be applied on either side of the vehicle. Control of the flow of marking material is by variable aperture venturi valves (40), as is control of flow of pigment and, when necessary, of purging material.
