Standard Complete Specification for the invention entitled:
PAINT
Details of Associated Provisional Applications: PQ 2393 Dated 23 August 1999 The following is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:- IP Australia Documents received on: AUG 2000 Batch No: 09 7 -2-
PAINT
The present invention relates to a paint, and in particular, but not exclusively, to a paint for marking lines on a road.
There are many known paints and compositions used for marking lines on roads including car parks. Due to the wear from vehicles, and exposure to the environment, these paints and coatings typically have properties substantially different to ordinary paint use for decorative purposes, for example painting a house.
"4.."The paints used for road marking can be broadly classified into cement based paints and "resin based paints.
A known disadvantage with the resin type paints is that they lack the chemical stability of cement based paints and in general have a reduced ability to retain glass beads.
Additionally resin based paints are typically hard at room temperature and therefore must be heated to be used.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a paint particularly suited to line marking ofroads.
•According to the present invention there is provided a paint suitable for use in marking roads including at least; white cement in the proportion of 18% to 22% by weight; aggregate in the proportion of 27% to 33% by weight; a polymer in the proportion of 3% to 6.5% by weight.
Preferably in the event that retro reflectivity is not a required feature of the paint, said aggregate is white washed river sand. Alternately, said aggregate comprises quarts.
In yet a further alternative, said aggregate includes a combination of white washed river sand in the proportion of 9% to 11% by weight and a mixture of quartz and glass beads in -3the combined proportion of 18% to 22% by weight. In the event that retro reflectivity is a requirement, said quartz/glass beads mixture is comprised solely of glass beads. That is, the mixture can contain either all quartz or all glass beads; or any combination therebetween.
Preferably said paint further includes TiO 2 white pigment in the proportion of 8% to 12% by weight.
Preferably the paint further includes calcium carbonate in the proportion of 16% to 24% by weight. This acts as a filler and whitener.
Preferably the paint further includes gypsum in the proportion of 4.5% to 5.5% by weight.
The gypsum is used as a filler, setting agent and whitener.
Advantageously, the paint further includes calcium chloride flake to a maximum of 3% by weight. This is used as an accelerator in winter conditions.
Preferably the paint further includes an ultra violet filter in a proportion of 1.6% to 2.4% by weight.
Preferably the paint further includes up to 2% by weight ultra marine blue pigment.
Preferably said polymer includes modified poly vinyl acetate in a proportion of 3% to 6% by weight and modified polyvinyl alcohol in the proportion of up to 0.5% by weight.
Preferably said paint further includes a cement plasticiser in the proportion of up to by weight. Advantageously, said cement plasticiser is diproplyene glycol dibenzoate.
Preferably said paint further includes up to 0.1% formic acid.
Preferably said paint further includes up to .01% glyoxal.
-4- In the preferred form the paint includes, by weight: White Cement 20% White Washed River Sand 10% Quartz/Glass Beads 20% TiO 2 White Pigment 10% Calcium Carbonate 20% Gypsum Calcium Chloride Flake 3% maximum Ultra Violet Filter 2% Ultra Marine Blue Pigment Less than 2% Poly (Vinyl Acetate) 3-6% Poly (Vinyl Alcohol) less than Diproplyene Glycol Dibenzoate less than Formic Acid less than .1% Glyoxal less than .01% When retro reflectivity is required, as stated above, the paint includes a proportion of glass beads. These glass beads are mixed with the paint during the manufacturing process and thus are contained in the patent when applied to a road or other surface. Accordingly, as the successive top layers of the paint are wor away, the retro reflectivity of the paint is not substantially degraded assuming uniform distribution of glass beads within the paint, which would ordinarily be the case.
Water is added to the paint to produce a consistency commensurate with the desired method of applying the paint. In this regard, when no water is added, the paint has a consistency similar to that of concrete and can be applied by trowelling or screeding.
However if additional water is added the paint is thinned and can be applied by use of a roller of a type similar to a conventional paint roller. It is further envisaged that the paint can be applied by way of spraying.
Conveniently, the combination of the poly vinyl acetate, poly vinyl alcohol, dipropplyene glycol dibenzoate, formic acid and glyoxal can be provided a single compound available under the trade name BONDCRETE.
All modifications and variations that will be apparent to a person of ordinary skill in the art are deemed to be within the scope of the present invention the nature of which is to be determined from the above description, and the appended claims.
