Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT
ORIGINAL
Name of Applicant: Actual Inventor: Address for Service: Invention Title: Details of Associated Provisional Applications: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY Byung-Jin Kim HODGKINSON OLD McINNES Patent Trade Mark Attorneys Level 3, 20 Alfred Street MILSONS POINT NSW 2061 Vehicle Body Panel Structure Korean Application No. 2000-47509 filed 17 August 2000 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us: \d on** VAA 21I ~0~ r i 1 VEHICLE BODY PANEL STRUCTURE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIION FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a body panel structure, and more particularly to a vehicle body panel structure joined by welding and adapted to disperse power transmitted from a side sill outer reinforcement panel to a rear filter reinforcement panel, thereby improving an overall flexural and torsional rigidity of body of a vehicle and promoting rideability.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART Generally, body panels are metal or plastic panels assembled to form a body of a vehicle, where a side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 is joined by a wheel housing inner panel 2 while the wheel housing inner panel 2 is joined by a quarter inner panel 3, as illustrated in Figure 1.
The wheel housing inner panel 2 is joined at a peripheral surface thereof by a rear filler reinforcement panel 4 for reinforcing a rear filter, and the rear filler reinforcement panel 4 is secured by the side sill outer reinforcement panel 1, as shown in Figure 2.
Meanwhile, the side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 is fixedly tightened at both ends thereof by quarter outer panels 5 while the rear filler reinforcement 20 panel 4 is fixed and joined at both ends thereof by rear floor assembly panels 6.
However, there is a problem in a body panel structure according to the prior art thus described in that the side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 and the rear filler reinforcement panel 4 are not joined but detached lengthwise at an approximate central overlapping portion therebetween, as depicted in Figure 2, such that force transmitted from the side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 is not effectively dispersed toward the rear filler reinforcement panel 4, thereby weakening the overall flexural and torsional rigidity of body of the vehicle and providing a bad rideability to passengers.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention is disclosed to solve the aforementioned problems and it is an object of the present invention to provide a vehicle body panel structure adapted to join an approximate central overlapping portion between a side sill outer reinforcement panel and a rear filler reinforcement panel to enable a force transmitted from the side sill outer reinforcement panel to be effectively dispersed to a rear filler reinforcement panel, thereby improving an overall flexural and torsional rigidity of a body of vehicle and promoting rideability of passengers in the vehicle.
1 veilIn accordance with the object of the present invention, there is provided a 15 vehicle body panel structure, wherein a side sill outer reinforcement panel and a :i rear filler reinforcement panel are integrally joined at both widthwise ends thereof and at a central overlapping portion thereof, and the rear filler ooooi reinforcement panel is joined to a peripheral surface of a wheel housing inner 4 panel while the side sill outer reinforcement panel is formed with a welding gun 20 passing hole through which a welding gun is inserted to weld the central overlapping portion.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS For fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference should be made to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view for illustrating a joined structure between a side sill outer reinforcement panel and a rear filter reinforcement panel according to the prior art; Figure 2 is a partial sectional view taken along line 11- of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a schematic perspective view for illustrating a joined structure between a side sill outer reinforcement panel and a rear filler reinforcement panel; Figure 4 is a partial sectional view taken along line 1IV-IV of Figure 3; and Figure 5 is a partial sectional view taken along line V-V of Figure 4.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Now, preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 3 is a schematic perspective view for illustrating a joined structure between a side sill outer reinforcement panel and a rear filler reinforcement panel according to the present invention, where like reference numerals are used for designation of like or equivalent parts or portions as in Figures 1 and 2 for simplicity of illustration and explanation.
body panel structure according to the present invention is constituted by a side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 joined by a wheel housing inner panel 2 which in turn joins a quarter inner panel 3.
The wheel housing inner panel 2 abuts at a peripheral surface thereof a rear filler reinforcement panel 4 for reinforcing a rear filler while the rear filler reinforcement panel 4 is secured at both ends thereof by the side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 as illustrated in Figure 4.
Furthermore, the side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 is fixedly joined by a quarter outer panel 5 as shown in Figure 4 while the rear filler reinforcement panel 4 is secured at both ends thereof by a rear floor assembly panel 6.
The side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 is formed with a predetermined size of welding gun passing hole la through which a predetermined size of welding gun 10 is inserted to weld the side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 and the rear filler reinforcement panel at an approximately lengthwise central overlapping portion therebetween, as illustrated in Figures 3 and In other words, the welding gun passing hole la is formed at a predetermined location at the side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 neighboring the overlapping portion where the side sill outer reinforcement 1 and the rear filler reinforcement panel 4 meet. The side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 and the rear filler reinforcement panel 4 are tightly secured by the overlapping portion welded by the welding gun 10 inserted through the welding gun passing hole la.
Once the overlapping portion between the side sill outer 5 reinforcement panel 1 and the rear filler reinforcement panel 4 is tightly fixed by the welding gun 10 according to the present invention. Force transmitted from the side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 is effectively dispersed through the rear filler reinforcement panel 4, thereby improving an overall flexural and torsional rigidity of a body of a vehicle and promoting rideability of passengers in the ovehicle, compared with the structure according to the prior art where the overlapping portion between the side sill outer reinforcement panel 1 and the .rear filler reinforcement panel 4 and not joined.
As apparent from the foregoing, there is an advantage in the vehicle body panel structure thus described according to the present invention in that an overlapping portion between a side sill outer reinforcement panel and a rear filler reinforcement panel is tightly welded by a welding gun, such that force transmitted from the side sill outer reinforcement panel is effectively dispersed through the rear filler reinforcement panel, thereby improving an overall flexural and promoting rideability of passengers in the vehicle.
The term "comprising" as used herein is used in the inclusive sense of "incLuding" or "having" and not in the exclusive sense of "consisting onLy of".
