Pipe Pile System with Interlock and Grout Pipe
TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present disclosure relates to construction industry, and in particular to a pipe pile system with interlock and grout pipe.
BACKGROUND
[0002] In current construction industry, excavation and lateral support (ELS) system comprising steel tubular pipe piles, grout curtain and lagging wall have widely been used to support the ground and prevent water seepage during deep basement excavation. The current method of construction of this ELS system basically involves different machineries and several steps as follows: a) install steel tubular pipe piles into the ground by heavy piling rigs as temporary vertical retaining wall to support the ground; b) drill small diameter vertical holes into the ground between each pipe pile by small drill rig; c) pump grout into the ground through these drillholes to form a grout curtain between pipe piles as water cut-off wall with low permeability; d) as basement excavation progresses downward, weld steel lagging plates between each pipe pile and layer by layer, to support the exposed soil face between each pile created during excavation; e) grout will also be provided to fill the gap between the lagging plate and the exposed soil face.
[0003] Accordingly, the current method of construction of the ELS system is quite tedious, time consuming and costly.
SUMMARY OF THIS DISCLOSURE
[0004] One object of the present disclosure is to provide an innovative construction detail that can be prefabricated in the steel tubular pipe piles to be installed, which can simplify and streamline the above operations hence result in significant time and cost save.
[0005] In the present disclosure, a pipe pile system comprising an interlock, a hydrophilic strip, and a grout pipe is provided. The interlock comprises a first interlocking element and a second interlocking element located at opposite sides of a pipe pile. The first interlocking element and the second interlocking element extend longitudinally along the length of the pipe pile. The first interlocking element is designed to engage and interlock with a second interlocking element of an adjacent pipe pile. The hydrophilic strip is anchored within a groove formed in the second interlocking element. The grout pipe is attached to a side of thefirst interlocking element.
[0006] In some embodiments, the first interlocking element is an open channel with a slot, and is composed of C-shaped plate to form a longitudinally-extending slot that opens into a longitudinally-extending cavity. A surface of the first interlocking element opposite the slot is welded to the pipe pile.
[0007] In some embodiments, the second interlocking element is a T-shaped rail that is attached to the pipe pile. The base of the T-shaped rail is welded to the pipe pile, and the cross bar extends outwardly thereof. When adjacent pipe piles are coupled together, the T-shaped rail of the second interlocking element passes through the slot in the first interlocking element and into the cavity. The cross bar of the T-shaped rail prevents the two interlocking elements from separating laterally. An accommodating slot is formed on the top surface of the cross bar of the T-shaped rail which is longitudinally-extending, and accommodates the hydrophilic strip.
[0008] In some embodiments, the grout pipe is located immediately next to the interlock. More specifically, the grout pipe is welded to a side of the first interlocking element and to a pipe pile. In some embodiments, the first interlocking element and the second interlocking element maintain the spaced relationship between adjacent pipe pile. The pipe pile system as provided is purposely designed with an interlock and built-in hydrophilic strip and grout pipe, hence offering extra water cut-off performance as well as eliminating the needs of drilling grout holes for curtain grouting. Comparing to the conventional method of grouting where grout will be injected randomly in all directions, our grout pipe is designed to have slots facing specific directions such that the grout injection will be focused in the designated zone only, resulting in saving of grout amount without affecting the water cut-off effectiveness.

The pipe pile system comprises at least two pipe piles (a first pipe pile 1, a second pipe pile 2), an interlock 3, a hydrophilic strip 4 and a grout pipe 5. The interlock 3 comprises a first interlocking element 31 and a second interlocking element 32. The first interlocking element 31 and the second interlocking element 32 extend longitudinally along opposite sides of each pipe pile. Each Pipe pile has a first interlocking element 31 and a second interlocking element 32 attached. The first interlocking element 31 and the second interlocking element 32 extend longitudinally along the length of each pipe. The first interlocking element 31 is designed to engage and interlock with a second interlocking element 32 of an adjacent pipe pile. The hydrophilic strip 4 is located within an accommodating slot 321 and the second interlocking element 32. The grout pipe 5 is attached to one side of thefirst interlocking element 31 and to a pipe pile. In some embodiments, the first interlocking element 31 is welded to one side of the pipe pile. The second interlocking element 32 is welded to the other side of the pipe pile. The grout pipe 5 is welded to the side of thefirst interlocking element 31 and pipe pile. As shown in Fig. 1, at least two pipe piles are connected by the interlock to form a continuous pipe pile system. The pipe pile system as depicted in Fig. 1 have more than two pipe piles. Each pipe pile can interlock with the other one by the interlock 3 to form the continuous pipe pile system.
[0019] As shown in Fig. 1 to Fig. 4, the interlock 3 comprises a first interlocking element 31 and a second interlocking element 32 located on opposite sides of each pipe pile. The first interlocking element 31 and the second interlocking element 32 extend longitudinally along the length of each pipe pile. The first interlocking element 31 is designed to engage and interlock with the second interlocking element 32 of an adjacent pipe pile. The hydrophilic strip 4 is anchored within a groove (accommodating slot) 321 formed in the engagement of the first interlocking element 31 and the second interlocking element 32. The grout pipe 5 is attached to a side of the first interlocking element 31.
[0020] The first interlocking element 31 is an open channel with a slot 311 and is composed of a C-shaped plate. Namely, the interlocking element 31 has a cross section shaped like a letter C. The C-shaped plate includes two flanges 312 and a web 313. The outermost edge of each flange 312 is provided with an integral inwardly turned lip 315 to form a longitudinally extending cavity 314 between a web facing surface of lip 315 and the web 313. A bottom surface of the first interlocking element 31 opposite the slot 311 is attached to one side of each pipe pile
[0021] The second interlocking element 32 is a T-shaped rail that is attached to the opposite side of each pipe pile. The base of the T-shaped rail 32 is welded to the opposite side of each pipe pile, and the cross bar extends outwardly thereof. When adjacent pipe piles are coupled together, the T-shaped rail passes through the slot 311 in the first interlocking element 31 and into the cavity 314. The cross bar of the T-shaped rail 32 prevents the two interlocking elements 31, 32 from separating laterally. The accommodating slot 311 is formed on a top surface of the cross bar of the T-shaped rail 32 when the cross bar of the T-shaped rail 32 is abutted against the inner wall of the cavity 314. The accommodating slot 311 is longitudinally-extending and accommodates the hydrophilic strip 4. The first interlocking element 31 and the second interlocking element 32 maintain the spaced relationship between adjacent pipe piles.
[0022] The interlock 3 is steel and is prefabricated to the pipe piles to be installed. In some embodiments, the dimension and shape of the interlock is purposely designed to has adequate strength and stiffness to prevent distortion or damage during installation of pipe piles. The accommodating slot formed between the first interlocking element 31 and the second interlocking element 32 is capable of accommodating the hydrophilic strip 4. The width of the interlock is minimized, hence less ground disturbance/settlement as smaller size drill bit can be used for installing pipe piles. Furthermore, the interlock 3 supports the ground between pipe piles during basement excavation, hence eliminates the needs of installing steel lagging plate and filling of voids behind with grout.
[0023] The hydrophilic strip 4 is a water stopper. More specifically, the hydrophilic strip 4 is an expandable material when in contact with underground water, hence significantly enhancing the water cut-off performance between the pipe piles. The accommodating slot 311 formed between the first interlocking element 31 and the second interlocking element 32 is capable of accommodating the hydrophilic strip 4. The hydrophilic strip 4 is fixed within the accommodating slot 311 of the interlock 3. In some embodiments, the hydrophilic strip 4 is a polyurethane hydrophilic sealant which swells in contact with underground water to 2-3 times of its original volume. It is conceivable that the hydrophilic strip can effectively seal any void within the interlock 3, hence significantly enhance the water cut-off performance.
[0024] The grout pipe 5 is located immediately next to the interlock 3. More specifically, the grout pipe 5 is welded to a side of thefirst interlocking element 31. Namely, the grout pipe 5 is integrated with the interlock 3, such that they will be both installed into the ground together with the pipe piles. Although the interlock design can provide very good water cut-off performance already, grouting behind the pipe pile may sometimes still be required for special reasons. The integrated grout hole 51 can be readily used for pumping of grout if needed, mobilization separate drilling rigs and frilling of grout holes 51 afterwards are no longer required. As the grout pipe 5 is located immediately next to the interlock 3, the grouting will be more effective as it is right next to where leakage may occur. Besides, the amount of grout required to pumped into the ground will be significantly reduced as the area to be treated by grout is more localized and specific, when comparing to conventional method with group holes located 1-2m away from the pipe piles where the pumped grout can infiltrate in all direction.
[0025] The provided pipe pile system as provided is purposely designed with an interlock and built-in hydrophilic strip and grout pipe, hence offering extra water cut-off performance as well as eliminating the needs drilling of grout holes for curtain grouting.
