BACKGROUND
Ankylosing spondylitis refers to a common chronic progressive osteoarthropathy in
clinic, which mainly affects the axial skeleton and leads to severe pain and disability. At
present, the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis has not been fully clarified. The
simple western medicine treatment has poor effect, and most of them are oral drugs, with
significant side effects after long-term application.
Ankylosing spondylitis belongs to the category of gout in Zhuang medicine, with slow,
long and recrudescent proceeding of pathological changes. Besides, it often involves the
spinous process, sacroiliac joint and hip joint. The Zhuang medicine believes that its
pathogenesis is congenital deficiency or acquired loss of nourishment, and then
pathogenic toxins such as wind, cold, and dampness swoop into the bones and muscles to
block the blood network and nervous network, causing the upper qi, lower qi and middle
qi to fail to synchronize and disease occurs.
Moxibustion therapy, as one of the common external therapies in Zhuang medicine, has
been widely used for the treatment of various diseases caused by the invasion of
pathogenic toxins such as wind, cold, and dampness and the blockage of blood network
and nervous network. There are many reports about the application of the traditional moxibustion therapy to the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis, but most of them use
