Location-based Collection and Transport of Recyclable or Reusable Items
TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present invention relates to systems for recycling and, more particularly although not exclusively, to the collection for recycling or reuse of recyclable or reusable items, and more particularly but not exclusively, where the items are in the form of household or consumer recyclable items.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Through the early 20th century, when the cost of producing glass bottles was higher, a natural industry existed through much of Australia where a licensed and unionized workforce commonly known as "bottle-ohs" from their street cries, travelled by cart around the streets buying empty bottles from households and businesses. They would then sell the bottles to a bottle yard, which would store and sort the bottles before selling them in bulk to brewers and other bottlers. The commercial reuse of glass bottles and the bottle collecting industry had all but disappeared by the 1950s, although soft drink and other beverage bottles were still collected in Queensland and returned for deposits up to the late 1960s.
[0003] Container deposit legislation (CDL) also known as the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS), was first implemented in South Australia in 1977. Similar systems were established in the Northern Territory (2012), New South Wales (2017), the Australian Capital Territory (June 2018) and Queensland (November 2018. Schemes in the remaining states have been legislated and are due to commence in Western Australia (June 2020), Tasmania (2022) and Victoria (2023).
[0004] However, as the majority of CDL schemes require the consumer (User) to prepare containers (Recyclable Items) for processing, transport them to a collection facility (Deposit Depot), and individually deposit each item to satisfy verification and reconciliation requirements many Users continue to dispose of Recyclable Items through government garbage collection services rather than make the effort to recycle. Consequently, the effectiveness of these schemes generally falls well below the target recycling efficiencies set under legislation.
[00051 Current recycling efforts have gradually gained traction through the implementation of CDLs and an overall increased awareness of environmental and sustainability issues in the community. However, the effectiveness of these schemes has been hampered by a) understanding by consumers of the eligibility of the items for recycling, and, b) the effort required by Users to submit items for recycling relative to the value of the refunds.
[0006] Preferred embodiments seek to address barriers retarding recycling rates by simplifying the deposit process and clarifying the recycling eligibility of items for Users, thereby saving the User time and effort, reducing mixing error, and supporting initiatives of government(s) to reduce the impact of waste on the environment, reduce society's carbon footprint, and support a greener future. Other outcomes may be the creation of employment opportunities, reduction in transport costs, etc.
[0007] It is an object of the present invention to address or at least ameliorate some of the above identified problems or disadvantages.
Notes
[0008] The term "comprising" (and grammatical variations thereof) is used in this specification in the inclusive sense of "having" or "including", and not in the exclusive sense of "consisting only of".
[0009] The above discussion of the prior art in the Background of the invention, is not an admission that any information discussed therein is citable prior art or part of the common general knowledge of persons skilled in the art in any country.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
[0010] Definitions
[0011] Reuse: in this specification re-use of a recyclable item means the item is not reprocessed beyond perhaps cleaning prior to reuse. In this specification reuse is taken to be encompassed within the term recycle. That is a recyclable item may be recycled by reuse.
[0012] Recycle: in this specification the term recyclable item means an item which can be reprocessed in some way in order that the material or materials from which it is constructed can be reprocessed for reuse - where the reuse may be the same use as prior to recycling or maybe a different use. For example, a plastic container after first use may simply be cleaned and then refilled for resale. Alternatively, the plastic container may be ground down and the plastics material from which it is constructed may be reprocessed for example through injection moulding machines to construct a plastics container in a different form - for example a different shape - or, indeed, may be reprocessed to construct a plastic toy.
[0013] Collector: in this specification a collector is a mobile agent effecting pick up transport and deposit at a depot of recyclable items.
[0014] Depot or Collection Depot: in this specification depot or collection depot is a facility for receipt and initial collation of recyclable items deposited by the collectors. In preferred forms the depot is relocatable. In other preferred forms the depot is modular.
[0015] Described herein are systems and/or processes for facilitating the preparation and collection of Recyclable Items 126, in preferred forms using Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 configured to contain the Recyclable Items 126 at point of pickup from a pickup location 115 by a Collector 110 and the subsequent transport and lodgement of those Recyclable Items 126 to a Deposit Depot 118 for subsequent recycling.
[0016] In certain embodiments, a Collector 110, may receive orders 128 for collection of a recyclable item Receptacle 134, where Users 114 have prepared/filled recyclable item Receptacles 134 and placed said recyclable item Receptacles 134 in a nominated Pick Up Location 115 at their premises, or elsewhere, for collection by the Collector 110 at an agreed time for subsequent delivery by the Collector 110 to a Deposit Depot 118.
[0017] More particularly, a User 114 initiating a Collection Order 128 may nominate a Pick Up Location 115 via digital device 116. The device 116 may take the form of mobile application or website provided by the System 100. For instance, the User may provide GPS data, a photograph, an address, or a landmark description, etc. indicating a Pick Up Location 115, where the User may place Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 for collection.
[0018] Upon receiving a Collection Order 128, the System may facilitate the collection by identifying available Collectors 110 able to conduct a collection of the Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 from the User's nominated Pick Up Location 115. The System may then inform available Collectors 110 of the existence of the Collection Order 128 via the digital device 112 for example a mobile application direct to Collectors' digital devices 112.
[0019] Selection of available Collectors 110 may be based on factors such as a) the number and size of the recyclable item receptacles 134, b) the capacity of Collectors' transport equipment, c) requested collection times, d) access restrictions, e) and/or the like. In some embodiments, the System 100 may select multiple Collectors 110 to collect the Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 and/or may cause different Collectors 110 to exchange or transfer Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 with one another in order to facilitate the delivery of the Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 to a Deposit Depot 118 in the most efficient manner possible.
[0020] In some embodiments, the System 100 may identify an area where a significant/threshold number of Users 114 are likely to be submitting Collection Orders 128(e.g. entertainment venues, business parks, or the like). In such situations the System 100 may establish collection schedules and allocate one or more Collectors to service those Pick Up Locations and schedules, thereby increasing efficiency for both Users 114 and Collectors 110, and minimising the risk of vandalism and environmental contamination from unattended Recyclable Item Receptacles 134.
[0021] The System 100 may collect data regarding the collection of Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 from Users 114, use that data to determine the performance of Collectors 110 and then take one or more actions based on the determined performance. In particular, the System 100 may determine the performance of Collectors 110 based on collection time and location data maintained by the System, audio/image/video data, and/or feedback from Users and/or Deposit Depots.
[0022] Accordingly, in a first broad form of the invention, there is provided a method of collecting Recyclable Items, for recycling and redistribution, the method comprising:

[0026] Preferably, the recycling account comprises a recyclable items recycling account, registered in the system.
[0027] Preferably, the method further comprises: a.providing a collection recycling credit to the recycling account, wherein the collection recycling credit is based on an amount and type of recyclable items collected as a result of the collection request 129; and b. adding the collection recycling credit to the recycling credit associated with the recycling account for both the User and the Collector.
[0028] Preferably, the collection recycling credit comprises one or more coupon/s, cash, a tax credit, and/or a rebate.
[0029] Preferably, the collection recycling credit comprises a discount applied to a purchase from a participating merchant.
[0030] Preferably, the Collection comprises a recyclables receptacle.
[0031] Preferably, the Collector comprises an individual, a community group or a collection company.
[0032] In another broad form of the invention, there is provided a system comprising:
a. A mobile device configured to: i.Scan an electronically readable element associated with the Recyclable Items: ii.Send the details of the product to a remote server: iii.Display the details of the collection request 129 on a display of the mobile device: iv.Request confirmation to make the collection request 129: v.Upon receiving confirmation, transfer stored geographical location to a system gateway: vi.Receive notifications of the collection process using the collection request 129 having occurred: b. one or more computer-executable instructions stored in the mobile device and executable by the one or more processors to perform operations comprising: i.receiving, via a mobile application that is associated with the system and that resides on a User Device of a User, a current geographic location of the User Device and a maximum amount of time for fulfilling the collection request 129 to the current geographic location; ii.identifying a plurality of the recyclable items that are ready for collection, iii.receiving, via the mobile application and from the User, the details of the recyclable items, iv.identifying a Collector to execute the collection based on a plurality of factors: v.facilitating the collection request 129 from the current geographic location by transmitting an instruction to collect the recyclables to the identified Collector.
[0033] In a further broad form of the invention, there is provided a method for a Collection Request 129 comprising:
a. scanning an electronically readable element associated with a product using a mobile device: b. capturing an image for the collected recyclable products, using a mobile device, and upload it to remote server for analysis: c. automatically retrieving details of the product including a monetary amount on the mobile device: d. displaying confirmation of the collection request 129 on the mobile device.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0053] With reference to figures 1, 2,3 described herein are systems and/or processes for facilitating the preparation and collection of Recyclable Items 126, in preferred forms using Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 configured to contain the Recyclable Items 126 at point of pickup from a pickup location 115 by a Collector 110 and the subsequent transport and lodgement of those Recyclable Items 126 to a Deposit Depot 118 for subsequent recycling.
[0054] In certain embodiments, a Collector 110, may receive orders 128 for collection of a recyclable item receptacle 134, where Users 114 have prepared/filled recyclable item Receptacles 134 and placed said recyclable item Receptacles 134 in a nominated Pick Up Location 115 at their premises, or elsewhere, for collection by the Collector 110 at an agreed time for subsequent delivery by the Collector 110 to a Deposit Depot 118.
[0055] More particularly, a User 114 initiating a Collection Order 128 may nominate a Pick Up Location 115 via digital device 116. The device 116 may take the form of mobile application or website provided by the System 100. For instance, the User may provide GPS data, a photograph, an address, or a landmark description, etc. indicating a Pick Up Location 115, where the User may place Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 for collection.
[0056] Upon receiving a Collection Order 128, the System may facilitate the collection by identifying available Collectors 110 able to conduct a collection of the Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 from the User's nominated Pick Up Location 115. The System may then inform available Collectors 110 of the existence of the Collection Order 128 via the digital device 116 for example a mobile application direct to Collectors' digital devices 112.
[0057] Selection of available Collectors 110 may be based on factors such as a) the number and size of the recyclable item receptacles 134, b) the capacity of Collectors' transport equipment, c) requested collection times, d) access restrictions, e) and/or the like.
[0058] In some embodiments, the System 100 may identify an area where a significant/threshold number of Users 114 are likely to be submitting Collection Orders 128(e.g. entertainment venues, business parks, or the like).
[0059] The System 100 may collect data regarding the collection of Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 from Users 114, use that data to determine the performance of Collectors 110 and then take one or more actions based on the determined performance. In particular, the System 100 may determine the performance of Collectors 110 based on collection time and location data maintained by the System, audio/image/video data, and/or feedback from Users and/or Deposit Depots.
[0060] Figure 3 illustrates an example System 100 for utilizing Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 to facilitate collection of Recyclable Items 126. As shown in Figure 3, System 100 consists of several sub-systems, namely:
[0061] Sub-system 101, which may comprise Users 114, User Devices 116 utilised by Users to communicate and operate within the System, and User locations 114 from which collections are made.
[0062] Sub-system 102, which may include content servers 104 each of which may include one or more processors 120, computer-readable media 122 - abbreviated in Figure 3 as CRM 122, and one or more modules 124.
[0063] Sub-system 103, which may comprise Collectors 110, Collector Devices 112 utilise to communicate and operate within the System, and their means of transport to attend User locations and Deposit Depots. Communication between the sub systems may occur via one or more networks 119.
[0064] The System may also utilise a specialised Recyclable Item receptacle 134 for accumulation and transport of Recyclable Items 126 and to facilitate registering, monitoring, and auditing execution of Collection Orders 128.
[0065] In various embodiments, Sub-system 102 may connect to Users 114 and Collectors 110 via an application resident on an electronic device (e.g. a computer, smart phone, etc.) which is registered on Sub-system 102. Users 114 may access the electronic system via corresponding User Devices 116 for the purpose of registering, submitting Collection Orders, receiving credits, acquiring collection receptacles, submitting queries, etc. Similarly, Collectors 110 may access the electronic system via corresponding Collector Devices 112 for the purpose of receiving Collection Order requests, confirming Collection Order details such as location, volumes, requested collection times, and the like.
[0066] Recyclable Item Receptacles 134, to collect the Recyclable Items 126, may be provided directly by Sub system 102, or via Sub-system 102 on behalf of a different entity. e.g. Users 114 may place Collection Orders for delivery of receptacles 134 by Collectors 110 via a website and/or a mobile application associated with the Sub-system 102.
[0067] To prepare a Collection Order a User 114 may initially identify the number and type of Recyclable Items 126 the User proposes to submit for collection using an application on their User Device 116. The application may utilise barcode, QR, digital image recognition, or similar technology to facilitate the compilation of the Collection Order data.
[0068] To pack the Collection Order the User may place the Recyclable Items 126 into a Recyclable Item Receptacle 134. Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 may be any type of Recyclable Item 126 provided initially by the system. Moreover, Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 may include a single compartment or multiple compartments. In the latter scenario, each different compartment may be used to segregate different types of Recyclable Items 126 such as plastic or glass bottles, cans, etc.
[0069] On completion of collection preparation, a User may initiate a Collection Order on the System via the User Device 116. A Collection Order may include detail on a) the number and type of Recyclable Items, b) the number of Recyclable Item Receptacles 134, c) the Pick Up Location 115 where the Recyclable Item Receptacles 134 may be placed by the User, d) the Users preferred collection time, and any other detail relevant to efficient collection of the recyclable materials. The collection detail may be transferred to the System electronically from data generated during the preparation of the order.
[0070] On receipt of a Collection Order the System may identify Collectors potentially able to make the collection within the parameters established with the User at the time of order submission.
