Description

HEAT SINK
Technical Field [0001] Various embodiments generally relate to a heat sink.
Background [0002] Typically, heat sink is the key part of a thermal module for a processor, for example in a laptop or a desktop or a computing device. The heat sink generally has a plurality of fins. The role of the plurality of fins in the heat sink is to increase heat exchange area. The fin is usually shaped in a manner so as to be easy to manufacture. However, such shapes would generally limit the heat exchange area. A common way to increase the size of the fins. However, doing so would cause high flow resistance of air and generate noise.
[0003] Accordingly, there is a need for an improved heat sink which may increase the heat exchange area with a lower noise generation.
Summary [0004] According to various embodiments, there is provided a heat sink. The heat sink may include a plurality of fins assembled together. Each of the plurality of fins may include a continuous solid elongate plate-like fin body having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. Each of the plurality of fins may include a first raised border along a first longitudinal side of the first surface of the elongate plate-like fin body. Each of the plurality of fins may include a second raised border along a second longitudinal side of the first surface of the elongate plate-like fin body. Each of the plurality of fins may include a secondary plate-like appendage disposed within a space defined by the elongate plate-like fin body, the first raised border and the second raised border. A first fin of the plurality of fins may be assembled to a second fin of the plurality of fins with the first raised border at the first longitudinal side of the first surface of the first fin and the second raised border at the second longitudinal side of the first surface of the first fin respectively engaged with first and second longitudinal sides of the second surface of the second fin in a manner so as to form a hollow longitudinal tunnel enclosed by the first fin and the second fin. The secondary plate-like appendage of the first fin may be oriented to longitudinally divide at least a portion of the hollow longitudinal tunnel.

Detailed description [0006] Embodiments described below in the context of the apparatus are analogously valid for the respective methods, and vice versa. Furthermore, it will be understood that the embodiments described below may be combined, for example, a part of one embodiment may be combined with a part of another embodiment.
[0007] It should be understood that the terms “on”, “over”, “top”, “bottom”, “down”, “side”, “back”, “left”, “right”, “front”, “lateral”, “side”, “up”, “down” etc., when used in the following description are used for convenience and to aid understanding of relative positions or directions, and not intended to limit the orientation of any device, or structure or any part of any device or structure. In addition, the singular terms “a”, “an”, and “the” include plural references unless context clearly indicates otherwise. Similarly, the word “or” is intended to include “and” unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.
[0008] Various embodiments generally relate to a heat sink. According to various embodiments, the heat sink may be a passive heat exchanger for transferring heat generated by an electronic device to the air so as to dissipate the heat away from the electronic device. According to various embodiments, the heat sink may be configured so as to improve the heat dissipation ability of the heat sink. According to various embodiments, the heat sink may include a plurality of fins which the air flows through such that thermal energy is transferred from the plurality of fins to the air flowing therethrough.
[0009] Typically, in a laptop or a mobile computing device, an internal space within a housing is generally small and confined. In order to have enough heat exchange area for the heat sink to dissipate heat, the fins are generally configured to be narrow and long. However, the side effect of narrow and long fins is that the flow resistance is high, which is not good for airflow along the fins and noise is generated.
[00010] Various embodiments seek to provide a heat sink which is configured to increase heat exchange area and to create turbulent airflow so as to increase heat transfer performance and reduce the noise generated. According to various embodiments, the heat sink may include a multi-fold fin. The multi-fold fin may add one or more folds to increase the heat exchange area and to create the turbulent airflow. Accordingly, the multi-fold fin may increase the heat transfer performance and reduce the noise generated. According to various embodiments, the additional fold of the multi-fold fin may create an additional leading edge of the fin (for example, about 50% or more) cutting the airflow and an additional heat exchange area (for example, about 35% or more) along which the airflow passes. Accordingly, the additional fold may add a lot of heat exchange area and may reduce the system noise produced by airflow through the heat sink.
[00011] According to various embodiments, the multi-fold fin may be easy to manufacture and flexible to configure. According to various embodiments, the additional fold may be folded from top, front, bottom, or read side of the fin. According to various embodiments, the additional fold may be configured to include additional features which are helpful to hydrodynamic performance.
[00012] FIG. 1A shows a schematic diagram of a heat sink 100 according to various embodiments. FIG. IB shows a schematic diagram of a fin 110 of the heat sink 100 of FIG. 1A according to various embodiments. According to various embodiments, the heat sink 100 may include a plurality of fins 110 (or two or more fins 110).
