Abstract
A WINDOW LOCK ASSEMBLY A window frame (10) that surrounds a window opening (11) that is closed by means of a sash (12). A chain winder (22) is operable to cause pivoting movement of the sash (12) between an open and closed position about an axis (20) provided by a longitudinally extending hinge portion (23) that is engaged by a longitudinally extending hinge portion (24) of the top rail (18) of the frame (11).
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to window assemblies and more particularly to window assemblies having a pivotally mounted sash.
BACKGROUND [0002] Pivoting windows have included a frame surrounding a window opening, with a pivotally mounted sash movable between an open position and a closed position by a window actuator. Typically the window actuator may be a chain winder or “scissor” linkage mechanism which allows the installation of fly-screens. Typically the upper rail of the sash is attached to the head of the window frame by means of one or more hinge/s fixed to the sash and frame.
[0003] The above discussed previously available window assemblies have suffered from the disadvantage that they can fail under heavy wind loads. Typically it is the window actuator (chain winder or linkage mechanism) that fails.
OBJECT [0004] It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage.
SUMMARY [0005] There is disclosed herein a window assembly including:
a window frame having, a sill, a head, two upright side jambs extending between the head and sill to provide a window frame surrounding a window opening;
8137778_1:hxa
2013101796 16 Dec 2013 a sash pivotally attached to the head and angularly movable about a generally horizontal axis between a closed position closing said opening and an open position with respect to said opening;
a window actuator mounted on the sill and connected to the sash to cause angular movement of the sash between the open and closed positions;
at least one catch mounted on a respective one of the jambs and operable to engage the sash when the sash is in the closed position to fix the sash in the closed position; and wherein the sash includes a top rail, with the top rail and head being formed of extruded sections, with the head having a longitudinally extending hinge portion, and the rail having a longitudinally extending hinge portion, with the hinge portions engaged to provide for pivoting movement of the sash between the open and closed positions while aiding and securing the sash to the window frame.
[0006] Preferably, the catch is a first catch, and the assembly includes a second catch, the second catch being mounted on the other jamb and operable to engage the sash to retain the sash in the closed position.
[0007] Preferably, the head and top rail each have a longitudinal length, and said hinge portions extend at least 50% of the longitudinal lengths of the rail and head.
[0008] Preferably, the pivot portions extend substantially the entire length of the top rail and head.
[0009] Preferably, the frame is formed of extrusions that provide said sill, jambs and head.
[0010] Preferably, the sash includes a sash frame providing said top rail, with the sash frame also providing side rails and a bottom rail.
[0011] Preferably, each catch includes a pivotally mounted lever, with the lever being angularly movable about a generally horizontal axis, with each catch further including a catch tongue moved linearly by the lever between a release position and a lock position, the catch tongue in the lock position engaging the sash to hold the sash in the closed position.
[0012] Preferably, the window actuator is a chain winder.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS [0013] Preferred forms of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompany drawings wherein:
[0014] Figure 1 is a schematic sectioned side elevation of a window sill;
[0015] Figure 2 is a schematic isometric view of the sill of Figure 1 and a side jamb; and [0016] Figure 3 is a schematic sectioned isometric view of a head and the side jamb of Figure 2.
DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS [0017] In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a window frame 10 that surrounds a window opening 11, with the opening 11 closed by means of a sash 12.
[0018] The frame 10 includes a sill 13, a head 14 and a pair of side jambs 15. In the accompanying drawings only one jamb 15 is illustrated. However it should be appreciated that the frame 10 is of a square or rectangular configuration so that there are a pair of jambs 15 that extend upwardly between the sill 13 and the head 14.
[0019] The sash 12 has a sash frame 32 consisting of a pair of generally upright side rails 16, a bottom rail 17 and a top rail 18. The sash frame 32 is of a generally rectangular or square configuration and surrounds a glass sheet 19 that is fixed to the sash frame 32.
[0020] The sash 12 is pivotally mounted on the head 14 for angular movement about a generally horizontal axis 20.
[0021] Mounted on the sill 13 is a window actuator 21. In this embodiment the window actuator 21 is a chain winder 22 that is operated to cause pivoting movement of the sash 12 about the axis 20 between a closed position closing the opening 11, and an open position providing air flow through the opening 11.
[0022] It should be appreciated that other actuators 21 may be employed apart from the chain winder 22. For example, linkage mechanisms such as “scissor” mechanisms may be employed.

2013101796 16 Dec 2013 [0023] In the attached drawings the chain winder 22 is illustrated however the chain extending from the body of the chain winder 22 to the sash 12 is not illustrated.
[0024] In this embodiment, the window frame 11 is formed of extruded sections, particularly extruded aluminium sections. Similarly the sash frame 32 is formed of extruded sections, particularly extruded aluminium sections.
[0025] The head 14 is formed with a longitudinal extending hinge portion 23 that engages a longitudinally extending hinge portion 24 of the top rail 18. In this embodiment the hinge portion 23 is a longitudinally extending flange 25 that is of a “C” transverse cross section so as to provide a longitudinally extending recess or socket. Mounted in the groove or socket is the hinge portion 24. In this embodiment the hinge portion 24 is a longitudinally extending bead that may be generally circular in cross-section to match the cross section of the longitudinally extending recess of the portion 24 to thereby provide smooth pivoting movement of the sash 12 about the axis 20. It should be appreciated the pivot portions 22 and 23 may extend the entire width of the sash 12, or may be merely longitudinal segments. However, preferably the portions 23 and 24 extend at least the majority of the longitudinal length of the top rail 18, and more preferably approximate the entire length of the top rail 18.
[0026] Mounted on each jamb 15 is a catch 33 that is actuable to engage the sash 12 to hold the sash 12 in the closed position and pull the sash 12 in against the jambs 15 as well as the sill 13.
[0027] The catch 33 includes a body 26 within which there is pivotally mounted a lever 27. The lever 27 engages a catch tongue 28 that is movable linearly in the direction 29. The tongue 28 is movable between a catch position as shown in Figure 2, and a release position. In the catch position the tongue 28 engages a striker 30. The striker 30 has a projection 31 that is engaged by the tongue 28 to retain the sash 12 in a closed position. Preferably, the tongue 28 and the projection 31 are configured to cooperate in a ramp manner so that as the tongue 28 moves upwardly in the direction 29, the sash 12 is moved in against the sill 13 and the jambs 15 to securely hold the sash 12 in the closed position. Preferably, a seal is located between the frame 10 and the sash 12 so that the seal is resiliently compressed when the sash 12 is moved to the closed position.
8137778 1:hxa
2013101796 16 Dec 2013 [0028] The striker 30 is located generally internally of the side rail 16. The tongue 28 projects through an aperture formed in the side rail 28 to thereby enable engagement of the tongue 28 with the projection 3.
[0029] Preferably, there is one of the catches 33 and associated striker 30 on each of the jambs 15.
